The Mac mini Desktop Computer from Apple is a quiet and compact desktop computer in a sleek aluminum unibody enclosure. The system, only 7.7" square and 1.4" high, is a great option for users who would like an inexpensive, yet fully-functional, desktop Mac. The mini ships sans keyboard, mouse and monitor, allowing you to choose the accessories that best suit your needs for use with the system.
iLife '11, a complete suite of digital creativity applications, is installed on the system. Easy enough for anyone to use, iLife will help you edit your home movies, organize digital photos and compose original music. The system features an HDMI output port, making it a great option for users who would like a home theater computer for Internet video streaming and big-screen computer gaming. An optional remote control is available separately for purchase.
The system is powered by 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 CPU and includes 4GB of RAM, a 500GB 5400rpm hard drive, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, an SDXC card reader and AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256MB GDDR5 graphics. The computer is loaded with Apple's Mac OS X Mavericks operating system. The 64-bit OS features Time Machine backup, which automatically backs up system data to an external hard drive.
It also features intuitive natural scrolling, the innovative Launchpad application launcher and support for full screen applications. Mission Control combines the functionality of Dashboard, Expose and Spaces - giving you a bird's eye view of everything that is happening on your computer.
Lion also adds Auto Save to your Mac, ensuring that you won't lose data if you forget to save a file. The OS tracks different versions of your documents, so you can go back to a previous draft of a document with ease. AirDrop makes it easy to transmit files wirelessly between computers, even if there is no central Wi-Fi network available. The revamped Mail application takes full advantage of modern widescreen displays.
And of course, you can expand the functionality of your computer system by browsing through the multitude of productivity applications, games and other software that is available for purchase from the Mac App Store. Because the software in the store is curated by Apple, you can be sure that it is free of malware and safe to use. And, like the iOS App Store, you'll automatically be notified when updated versions of your favorite programs are available for download.
I love this Mac mini. It is super energy efficient and works whenever I need a computer, without being big and bulky, and sucking up unnecessary power. I did upgrade the RAM. It was super easy, took about two minutes. Now it's 16 Gb, perfect. I'm using it as my base station to collect photos and music, it's great to have everything centrally located in a safe place. I've been wanting a Mac for a while, this is an affordable alternative to a MacBook. So far nothing negative, like everything else by apple it just works, and that's what I love.
Plan to use exclusively for photos. This is where the Mac excels over that of the PC. The Macs are also well known for their user friendliness and their highly intuitive approach to computing. The PC is approaching that level but not yet there. Another big selling point to buying Macs over PCs is that most applications one needs come bundled while in the PC you have to buy most of them from third party software companies. The downside is that you will have to pay more for the MAC as against a PC of comparable power.
The computer is fast! Very happy with it!
It's silent. It's fast. It's value. This Mac mini replaced a Mac G5 tower unit in a advertising design studio environment. I run Photoshop and InDesign everyday amongst others and they are fast on the mini. The unit does not ship with a manual and a check of the Apple site only yielded a copy of the same mini info folders that ship with the unit. The Apple site does have a copy of the 2111 mac mini manual available for free download and that seems to cover the 2012/13 models fine. Adorama was a great source for my Mac mini. To say I'm well pleased is an understatement.
Upgradable is a big big plus
I bought all the speed and storage I could afford, and think this is the best deal. I don't like all the connectivity i-cloud bs, but thats everywhere, and not a complaint about this product. I'm switching from PC to Mac, and got set up and running without undue difficulty (that says a lot comeing from me). I havent owned it long eough to comment on reliability.
I am jumping ship from a slowly dying Mac Pro Tower G5 which is a great machine but no longer able to be updated. I have been waiting to purchase the new (possibly) upcoming Mac Pro Tower for 2013, but I couldn't wait any longer. So I bought this mini to hold me over until the new Mac Pros appear. Surprise! This little computer is very fast, efficient and powerful. It has four USB 3 ports, a firewire 800 port and (drum roll) Thunderbolt!! fastest port in the West! It has a 1 TB fusion drive which is quite a bit faster than a standard HD running at 7200 rpm. I bought this with 8GB and it can be (user) upgraded to 16GB Ram. It also came a HDMI video port driven by Intel HD Graphics 4000! What's not to love? I may not need that Mac Pro anytime soon.
