I was looking for a camera that was the perfect compromise without having to buy two cameras for solar, lunar, and planetary imaging. The DMK31AF03AS has a very high quality look and feel to it and does everything well, I am very happy with it. Included are links to my (amature) first shots of jupiter and the sun. http://www.pbase.com/lightstuff/image/158007345 http://www.pbase.com/lightstuff/image/158022116

I use the DMK-31 for all aspects of Astrophotography. The monochrome sensor assures the most detail out of every image. The videos stack easily in Registax. Such a breeze to use.. Don't waste your money on a webcam. This is the way to go for sure. This camera is so versatile. Adorama's service was exceptional, and I had the camera in two days! (of course the clouds came too!) I captured Mars and a looping Solar prominence with fantastic detail.

The astro CCD cameras DMK 31AF03 unifies three important characteristics for astrophotography: high resolution, fast refresh rate and a low price. Using the shipped software - IC Capture - you can save the captured images to lossless and uncompressed AVI files. The astro CCD camera DMK 31AF03.AS outputs a fast stream of uncompressed monochrome images. In order to transfer these to the host PC, a very fast bus is required. Hence, the camera is fitted with a FireWire connector.
The astro CCD cameras DMK 31AF03.AS is based on the CCD chip ICX204AL, manufactured by Sony. This monochrome CCD has a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels at 1/3" format. Even at long exposure times, its noise is minimal. Due to the high quality of the ICX204AL, the CCD chip is often used in industrial image processing applications. The image data produced by the CCD camera DMK 31AF03.AS is not compressed. Furthermore, the camera does not have any optical, nor electronic filters. Thus, the camera produces very true-to-life captures of the night sky.
