Have used the camera on a few commercial shoots, had a B4 lens attached, worked wonderfully! Sensor was large enough to give me good depth of field yet small enough to handle the B4 lens without too much distortion. Lens was about 10 times the size of the camera, but it looked pretty awesome. I took one start away for audio recording, wish is did a better job with audio.
Fantastic codecs, support, firmware upgrades, lens support (micro 4/3). Can be small and stealthy or fully rigged out pro. I like the "extra" depth of field possible with the smaller sensor. Rock solid build.
I've used this product with a B4 lens adapter, very nice images, the adapter caused a little distortion but still had a beautiful picture. Had to take one star away since the audio on the camera is a little lacking. Other than that, love the little thing!
I'm giving this camera 5 stars, not because it doesn't have any issues, but rather because it really can't be compared with anything else in its price class. The image that you can get out of this is unheard of for this price, so the fact that the camera requires extra steps (grading), extra rigging, extra power solutions, extra data cards, etc, is ok...AS LONG AS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO!. I am coming from a GH3 background and having the ability to ETTR and really push the grade in whatever direction I want is something amazing. Skin tones look great, etc. There is no reason to go into detail here about all of the workarounds for the challenges that this camera offers the user. There is plenty of info about that online. I'm very happy with the purchase, and as long as I have a more "convenient" camera like the GH3, then I have all bases covered. I have the nikon bmpcc speedbooster as well with the sigma 18-35mm. Amazing combo. Not small, not light, but IQ is great.
As a BMCC owner, this is an absolutely excellent counterpart that delivers visuals very much on-par with its bigger sibling at a fraction of the price (even more so if you manage to snag one on sale at $500). Anyone who has yet to make the leap from DSLR videography would be well-served by this little guy, although you NEED to be aware that your lenses will not perform at the same looking focal-lengths you'll have been used to. If you're used to a Nikon DX or Canon APS-C crop sensor, you can effectively match the same look by way of a speed booster, but full-frame DSLR users may be initally shocked to see their previously wide-angle lenses turning into mild telephotos! As for a few of the differences between this and the BMCC: -The cinemaDNG format is compressed instead of uncompressed, which overall is a good thing (it seems like a lossless, or near-lossless compression, so files are smaller without looking worse) -The in-camera mic is terrible quality, making the BMCC actually sound usable by comparison. You MUST use sync sound (get a Zoom h5 / h6 or similar) -It's small enough that you'll probably need to purchase a rig (like the one from Tilta) to do effective handheld work, but less awkward to hold than the BMCC I have a hard time giving anything a 5-star rating, but for the price I couldn't be happier. Blackmagic has proven themselves to be a good company in the months (and years) since the initial launch of the BMCC, providing essential features via firmware updates that many users weren't sure they'd ever see. Now if we could just get some slightly higher framerates outside of getting the URSA...
Fantastic dynamic range, a fully pro video camera in a well built, tough, tiny package with access to all the great m4/3 lenses.
A great camera for this size and price. The cards fill up fast when shooting raw, and it eats up batteries (Get the wasabi charger that comes with 2 batteries). So it's best used in a controlled environment where you can dump footage and charge batteries frequently, like a film set. Documentarians and other news gatherers may find it less useful (though the recent firmware update with new ProRes codec will let you fit more on a card). To take full advantage of this camera, you should learn to use DaVinci Resolve, which has a free lite version.
This is a real well built PRO camera with access to a huge number of excellent m43 lenses. It is built like a tank, great dynamic range, good low light sensitivity etc etc Downsides: huge files (but new firmware addresses this), LCD useless in bright light. Small battery.
I purchased this camera so I could have a second or third camera on-set for B roll and other uses. I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality, the LCD screen quality, overall handling, and image quality. Quite the camera at this price point and beyond! My only issue is that, while one can adapt other lenses (such as a Canon EF lens), this is a small camera, and I have concerns about the tripod mount and how well it will hold up. Might have to get a cage for it.
The image quality at this price point is unmatched. People have no idea that you're taking perfect quality video with that tiny smart-phone sized camera you're carrying. It's a dream. I actually own the 2.5k camera, and while that camera has it's strengths, I find myself grabbing the pocket cam more and more often. It fits snuggly in the hands, and the SD card media is a little friendlier than the SSD. The pocket camera's batteries actually last a pretty decent amount of time. I went out to a shoot at 8pm and didn't wrap until 10:30pm and I still had a good chunk of battery life. Though, I did turn the camera off when not in use, but only once in a while. The controls are simplistic, it's all bare bones, not what a lot of pros are used to dealing with. But hop over that learning curve, and you've got a tiny camera capable of incredible results.
