About Canon 100mm F/2.

A totally revised version of the popular 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Focusing over the full range from infinity down to life size (1:1 reproduction ratio), this lens will impress any serious photographer with its combination of versatility, image quality and superb handling. A high-performance ring type Ultrasonic Motor provides fast and silent AF throughout its focus range, and even more significantly, allows full-time manual focusing-- permitting the close-up or macro shooter to instantly override the AF whenever necessary.

Autofocus lens for macro photography up to life-size (1x) magnification. Inner focusing affords a long working distance of 5.9in. (149mm) at 1x. A 3-group floating system results in excellent delineation at all focusing distances. Ring USM for silent and high-speed AF, and full-time manual focusing also provided. The optional Tripod Mount Ring (B) B (with adapter) enables the lens to be rotated for vertical or horizontal framing.

GOOD MACRO LENS

By

from PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND  -  Photo Enthusiast

I AM USING THIS MACRO LENS ON A SONY NEX 7 CAMERA WITH A METABONES ADAPTER FOR MACRO AND PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY. I FIND THE LENS TO BE STURDY AND WELL BUILT. BOTH PORTRAIT AND MACRO PHOTOS CAME OUT IN VERY SHARP FOCUS. THE SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD FOR MACRO CAN GET VERY SENSITIVE. THE LENS AUTO FOCUS DOES NOT WORK WELL WITH THE NEX 7. THE MANUAL FOCUS WITH SONY'S PEAKING COLOR FUNCTION HELPS TO MAKING FOCUSING SPOT ON. THE BOKEH IS VERY GOOD. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THIS LENS.

Better than expected

By

I chose this lens over several more expensive models based on test reports, user reviews and, above all, price. While it may not have the build quality and weather sealing of those more expensive models, it still feels quite well built. When focussing manually, the focussing ring is very smooth making it easy to fine tune the focus. Auto focus is fast, quiet and accurate. I purchased this lens primarily for macro work but it makes an excellent moderate telephoto lens too. Very nice for portraits, at f2.8 the subject is very sharp while throwing the background out of focus and producing a pleasing bokeh. I am very impressed with the image quality of my macro shots so far. Naturally a lens of this focal length focussing at macro distances has a very shallow depth of field but when I've managed to focus just right the resulting images are extremely sharp. I've even used this lens with an older tamron 2x tele converter and the image quality is still very good. Though I don't typically use auto focus when doing macro work I was pleased to discover auto focus worked quite well when using the tele converter. I'm using this lens on my crop sensor Canon 70D and my older T1i so the lens has an equivalent focal length of 160mm. It does lack image stabilization but since I purchased this lens for macro work where I nearly always use flash that was not an issue with me. After using it for a couple of weeks now I am very happy with the performance of this lens and really can't find anything negative to say about it.

Ideal lens for macro

By

from Goshen NY  -  Pro Photographer

Used with the canon twinlite MT-24EX and canon 7D, I am able to capture fantastic detailed macro images of tiny insects . My interest is in entomology and the images obtained with this combination have proven to be unbeatable. There is no downside to this lens.

Wonderful Buy!

By

from Sevierville, TN  -  Photo Enthusiast

I have used this Macro lens to snap beautiful photos of details in rings, water droplets, insects, and flowers. The intricate details are crystal clear (as long as the camera is held steady)! Despite the fact that I still have a lot to learn about photography, I have been able to produce very professional-looking photos with this lens.

Great macro lens!

By

from Tiger, Ga  -  Photo Enthusiast

I use my macro lens to mostly photograph flowers, insects and other small creatures. It's easy to use with it's simplistic design. Because it doesn't have an image stabilizer, I do use my tripod if my hands aren't steady enough. The day I got it, it was raining, but that didn't stop me from staying outside umbrella in hand, and even later until 1 am with a flashlight. Great nighttime pictures.

Good Non L lens to consider.

By

from Chicagoland, IL  -  Photo Enthusiast

Just recently bought this lens after reading and viewing 100's of youtube vid's. So far I can say I am very very happy with sharpness. I kit has 50d with 50mm F1.8, 10-22mm and now this wonderful 100mm F2.8 lens. One thing I realized with 100mm is I need more steady hands and use tripod more to improve my photography. This is a great lens and will recommend it as a lens for there kit.

Questions about this item:

sylvester c  what kind of close up can i experience with this lens?
Stephen K  Excellent.
rose r  i wonder if it`s works in my canon rebel xsi?
CARL K  It will work WITH it, not IN it. Any Canon USM lens will work with the smaller sensor cameras. Your effective focal range with this lens will be equivalent to a 160mm. If you are looking for a prime portrait lens, I would get the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, the equivalent of a 136mm lens.
