Amazing go-to lens...
This is my first experience with a 24-70 variant... Coming from the 24-105L, the difference is quite significant. This lens has incredible resolution at 24mm edge to edge on my 5D Mark III. Even wide open, the microcontrast is simply amazing. The images look better wide open than the 24-105L does at f/8. It is THAT good. The lens does soften a tad at 70mm. Even wide open, the microcontrast is simply amazing. The images look better wide open than the 24-105L does at f/8. It is THAT good. The lens does soften a tad at 70mm. It is still extremely sharp, but not exactly to the level of 24mm. To give a comparison, I find the 24-70 II at 70mm similar in sharpness to the magnificent 70-200 II at 70mm. You would be hard pressed to find any difference in image quality. Build quality is excellent. Most of the exterior is engineering plastic versus metal or other materials. Still feels extremely high quality and the weight reduction from the previous version is welcomed. The only downfall with the lens is the lack of IS and the cost without it. Not exactly required for everybody, it is a very nice feature on the long end of the zoom range. For the price of this lens, IS should have been included. I am assuming Canon had good reason to omit IS for image quality benefits. As far as copy variation, the first copy of this lens I had to return due to a decentered lens element causing softness on the right side of the frame at 24mm... My second copy I am currently using appears to be perfect. Other image quality attributes this lens offers include beautiful 18-point sunstars when conditions are right. CA levels are extremely low if not non-existent. Flare is well controlled. There is quite a bit of light-falloff (vignetting) but is easily corrected in post if need be. The lens also features very quick AF, one of the fastest I have used honestly.. As with the 70-200 II, I really like the locking lens hood. The zoom lock is also a very nice feature as zoom lenses have the tendency to creep with heavy use over time. There is no zoom creep so far, but time will tell how the internals will hold up to heavy use in this case. I am extremely impressed by this lens overall. It has prime lens image quality (if not better in some cases) with the versatility of a zoom. I highly recommend this lens.

II) I.S. systemÃ¢â‚¬Â¦ That, plus itÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s constant max. aperture of f/2.8 makes the 70-200 SO versatile; you can take handheld shots with it in (VERY low light) situations where common sense says that a telephoto zoom lens simply shouldnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t work. I canÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t speak for others here, but what I was really hoping for with the 24-70 f/2.8L II was a companion piece to my 70-200; a lens that picks up at 70mm and goes down to some reasonable wide-angle figure (24mm is fine), that offers the same image quality AND PERFORMANCE as my 70-200. Canon seems to have nailed the image quality part with the 24-70 f/2.8L II, but without Image Stabilization, the lens fails dismally in terms of matching the 70-200Ã¢â‚¬â„¢s low-light performance. A Ã¢â‚¬Å“general purposeÃ¢â‚¬ï¿½ zoom lens that is no good in low light wonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t be very useful to most. I did some side-by-side testing of the 24-70 f/2.8L II against my trusty 24-105 f/4L IS, and I saw blur from camera shake at f/2.8 with the 24-70, but the same shots in the same light at f/4 (with I.S.) were just fine on my MUCH cheaper 24-105. When the 24-105 seriously outguns the 24-70 in low light, thatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s a huge embarrassment. Canon needs to develop an Image Stabilized version of the 24-70 f/2.8L II very soon Ã¢â‚¬" even if there is a miniscule, theoretical reduction in image quality. Those who are utterly insane about image quality tend to use primes anyway. Those of us who buy zooms (particularly in this Ã¢â‚¬Å“general purposeÃ¢â‚¬ï¿½ focal length range) are willing to trade a bit of image quality for versatility. Unless Canon cuts the price of this lens by about 50%, IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢d say donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t waste your money on it. Get the 24-105 if you want a true Ã¢â‚¬Å“general purposeÃ¢â‚¬ï¿½ lens Ã¢â‚¬" it has half again as much reach as 24-70, has Image Stabilization, and can be had for about a third of the price of the 24-70 f/2.8L II. Image quality of the 24-105 isnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t as good as the 24-70, but itÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s still very good. For what you have to pay, the 24-70 isnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t several magnitudes better than the 24-105. IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m very underwhelmed my 24-70 and seriously disappointed with Canon. What were they thinking here?!

As a studio fashion and beauty photographer I wanted a mid range zoom for versatility and speed. With the Canon 5D S ( R ) coming onto the market I wanted the sharpest option. That's exactly what I got with this lens and I couldn't be happier. However I would have liked image stabilization, but according to an unqualified source Canon wouldn't have been able to make as sharp of a lens. Others have complained about the material it's made of and would prefer all metal construction. I don't find myself questioning wether this will last many years of studio photography where I make sure to take the best care of my equipment. Photojournalists however might find it to be too weak.
I recently went on a shoot with Canon where they were allowing us to use the recently released "L" Series II lenses. While I was very happy with my series I lenses the difference in sharpness was incredible. Since I am planning on upgrading to the new Series 5ds when it is available in June I was sure that I would need to upgrade to the series II lenses. I've now made the transition to the 16-35, 24-70, 100-400 lenses in anticipation of the new 5ds body. These lenses are just INCREDIBLE. Very, very sharp! Not inexpensive, but just like computers "Garbage IN, Garbage OUT".
Great lens. Very Sharp, but over priced and no IS. I'm considering going third-party lenses. I cannot imagine the PRICE of the future 24-70 F2.8 L USM "IS" "I" or "II" when it comes out. Make the lenses more affordable so people won't go anywhere else to get them. You are loosing big time on this issue!
My review of the EF 24-70mm F/2.8 II USM. This lens is simply the best standard zoom lens on the market. When you first hold this lens in your hand, you know you are holding a powerful and valuable object of the finest digital imaging technology. The build quality is rigid, solid, and sleek. The lens filter is surprising large compared to most lenses at 82mm diameter. It has a lock switch only at 24mm, AF & MF mode switch, focus ring and focal length ring. Aside from the exterior technical details, the 24-70mm depicts some of the most beautiful, gorgeous and stunning colors that I have ever seen a lens can produce. Some may ask, can this lens really be that good and worth high price tag? Some may ask, can't I just get away with an affordable lens? It certainly depends on your photography goals, but if you want the sharpest, cleanest shots to enhance your skill to the professional grade level, this is the lens. After hemming and hawing for months over whether I should buy this lens or not, I made the leap of faith, and I must honestly say that I don't regret it. In fact, unless I'm using my super telephoto lens, this lens practically is glued to my 7D Mark II now as my all around go to standard zoom lens. The only thing I wish Canon could improve on the quality of the lens hood. It feels too 'plastic'. I really do like the quality of the older lens hoods from years ago with more solid harder plastic material. The saving grace with the new lens hood is that it has nice lock switch. In conclusion, the 24-70mm is a first class lens!
This lens is truly exceptional. Some may think this lens is only for the pros but any shooter can benefit from such a fast piece of glass. It is very expensive but well worth the investment.

Canons 24-70mm II, is the best lens I have ever used from the Canon line-up of lens. I am purchasing 50mm 1.2, & 85mm 1.2, and 135mm f2, s for my Wedding Photography, but I can't wait to see if these lens stack up to my copy of the new Canon lens?
Following a long back and forth debate with myself about spending the money for this lens, I decided to take the plunge after reading numerous reviews on the new 24-70mm 2.8L lens. Wow, what a lens; I use this on my Canon 5D Mark II, it's fast, sharp, quiet, versatile....everything you could want in a high quality, professional all purpose lens. This is a great lens for travel, street photography and landscape. Smooth, easy operation with great optics and color capture. I owned a 24-105mm 4.0 L prior and was quite happy with it, but this lens is a definite step up. The only issue is the price, no getting away from that, however, if you can get past cost, this is the Canon lens to own. My problem now is finding enough time to get out to shoot, as it seems I always want to be out behind this lens......
While not the most exciting lens it does what I need it to do. I only gave it four stars because of lack of I.S. The contrast is wonderful - I believe even better then my 70-200 2.8 IS II. It is also a sharp lens. Cant complain too much.
