Impressive Lens

This is a very impressive lens but you need to have reasonable expectations. The huge advantage of this lens is its' range. I simply don't have time to be switching lenses all the time. This is a very impressive lens but you need to have reasonable expectations. The huge advantage of this lens is its' range. I simply don't have time to be switching lenses all the time. Within a few seconds I may need to capture some wide-angle action or zoom in on a special face across the room. Carrying multiple lenses and switching is not always practical. I'd rather "get the shot" than miss it completely while fumbling to get perfect lens out of my bag. Is it as sharp as a prime lens or a limited zoom (such as 70-200L)? Probably not but it is certainly well within the acceptable quality range for professional prints of moderate size. The images are bright and crisp. I’ve tried lenses of similar range by Tamron and Sigma but this is another example of you get what you pay for. The Canon 28-300 provides a much higher image quality but that’s reflected in the cost of the lens. Also, this lens is large and very HEAVY (Instead of a tripod mount I'd recommend a trailer hitch)! It’s not something you’re going to slip in a coat pocket. It’s excellent when you want to do some serious photography of rapidly changing situations (i.e. weddings, parties, graduations, etc). This monster will certainly separate you from the Point and Shoot crowd. The weight takes some getting used to but it’s not a show-stopper. Zoom is easy to use and the auto focus is fast and dead-on accurate even in fairly low light. The image stabilizer gives you an extra 2 stops. Bottom line: If you're a pixel peeper that insists on absolute perfection in a light weight housing, keep looking because this lens is not for you (I personally don’t think that lens exists). But if you're a realist and you need to quickly "get the shot" without sacrificing quality, this lens will be an excellent choice. The impressive range and image quality makes this lens worthy of "L" name and high cost. This has quickly become my favorite lens.

95% stays on my 1DSMarkIII

from San Jose CA.

This lens stays on my 1DSIII 95% of the time. I also have the 24L, 100L IS, 100-400L with 2X&1.4. Granted it is fairly heavy but I do hike Yosemite with it.

L Lens Versatility

from Space coast, FL

I suspect that anyone that is considering this lens is primarily interested in the range of versatility within one high quality lens, as was I. Whether on a crop sensor or full frame this is an amazing lens, especially if you don't want to carry your kit and switch lenses. Many people have discussed the weight as being an issue, but having the 70-200mm 2.8L IS and the 100-400mmL IS, it's only slightly heavier. This is the "one" lens that can do it all extremely well.

Stop Waiting, Buy It!

from North Carolina

I watched this lens for literally a year, reading review after review, trying to figure out if it was worth the money before I finally purchased it. Since I took it out of the box, I have not taken the lens off my camera (18 MP 60D) and LOVE IT! So much so that I'm about upgrade to a 5D or a 6D and I've finally fulfilled a long dream and officially started my photography company!! USES - I have gotten awesome shots at sporting events (Football, NHRA, Swimming), family sessions, portraits/headshots, architectural, and outdoor/landscape with this lens....There is nothing this lens will not do! Why I Waited - Outside of the cost, seeing the reviews about the weight of the lens is what made me the most nervous. Yes it is heavy, but after my 2nd or 3rd time shooting with the lens the weight was a non-issue/Not-noticeable. I shot for over 3 hours last week at a local park doing multiple family sessions and never grew tired at all. So seriously, quit worrying if it is worth it and buy it already!

Great in bright light

from San Diego

Okay, in reference to the earlier review; I kept the lens and I have been using it due to it's incredibly flexible range. I shot offroad races last weekend and the lens was the no brainer to take. I could get people in the pits close by and when the cars were at a distance you get (300mm) shots that don't look like they are taken close by. They look great. The clarity is very good and again the lens worked great right up to sundown. As long as you know this the lens is a killer. After the light dims go to super fast lens ( I avoid flash if at all possible.) So do you get a 28-300? I would do it again and give it 5 stars now. PS Yes I give the tightening ring more attention than I admit and it is a pain at Petco Park moving around, but when the action is fast and you want the tall lens and then it must be shorter and then close up and then long again... well that is this lens! The reviews of the images have been great.

How Did I Live Without It?

from Seattle, WA

I've got a number of lenses for my 5D Mark III - some from a 15 year old 30-D including a 28-200mm zoom. The old lens works on the Mark III just fine but really doesn't seem to provide the artistic effect that I wanted. So, I took the plunge and bought the EF 28-300mm IS USM lens. Boy, I am happy that I did! The new zoom lens is heavy to be sure and you'll probably want to hold the lens body as you carry it as it's a bit heavy for the neck strap alone. The beauty of the new EF lens for me is that I can see the shot I want and zoom in to fill the frame with the elements I want getting rid of what I don't want. The sliding barrel zoom function enables me to very quickly look at lots of framing options and the IS feature gets rid of any camera shake in lower light conditions. Of course, the neatest feature is the ability to go from a focal length of 28mm to 300mm without changing the lens. All-in-all this is a great lens for the photographer who needs these capabilities.

all in one lens

takes a little time to adjust the zoom. Good lens for a travel lens when you want to limit the number you take.

Love the range of this lens. Unless I plan to shoot wildlife this is a the only lens I carry on trips. Nice to be down to one lens to pack and carry!

I must have a bad one?!?

from San Diego, CA

I am using this lens on a 5D3. First the focusing is an issue since the camera is having problems it does not have with any of the other (5) L lenses I use. The ISO is also kicked into really high numbers in indoor shots and for no appreciable reason, resulting in very noisy shots. the detail is there but it is not that sharp, even shooting RAW. The focus plane is a problem too. Setting a higher F should give more depth but at distances that other lens will deliver sharp depth of field I get people that are not in focus while others are in group shots. This is a big problem. Shots that I wanted more bokeh did not get that much unless I physically moved out to a distance and zoomed the lens. And even then the bokeh was mild. The best shots are outdoors with daytime light. Focus and sharpness are extra important to me. I demand razor sharp shots and this lens does not deliver ever. It just does not do what a 24-70 or a 70-200 or a 16-35 will do. Period. I am very disappointed since I read up on reviews from users for weeks before buying it. For this much money it should be a top notch lens but it delivers mediocre results. The weight is an issue only in that you must hold the lens with your left hand when not shooting to prevent the lens barrel from sliding all the way out. This is a major pain since you need your left hand to operate the camera when reviewing shots and it is not available because it is holding the lens from shooting (sliding hard) down from gravity. My wrist was fine the next day despite the weight of the camera, lens and flash (it really is heavy!) and shooting for hours on end. I really want this lens to be good but I have shot a wedding, wildlife, landscape and family shots and even tried macro type shots; the results are all consistently disappointing. I can get great shots but the chances of a good shot turning out bad are too high and I cannot learn to use this one lens differently than all of the others and still roll the dice on what I end up with.Sadly I am returning it.

Great All around lens

Weight is meant for a bigger guy like me who can handle it. Its great to have convenience of shooting distances of 28-300mm with quality aperture with my Canon 5d M3

Excellent lens

from San Antonio, TX

I have owned the lens for almost 3 years. I has performed admirably and has done everything that I have asked it to do. When used within its design range, you cannot have a better partner waiting on you to call it into action. I have never been disappointed with it. Some comment that it is heavy. It is only 8 oz. heavier that the 70-200 F2.8 and no one complains about that one. I have carried it afield on numerous occasions and have not been made weary from the weight. Overall, an excellent addition to the photo equipment bag. I probably use it for 85% of my shooting.
