Sharpest Lens for Large Family Portrait

I bought this for a large family portrait where the final image will be a very large wall print. So this was the best sharpest lens for my 5D Mark II. Looking forward to using at weddings also.

One of the best lens'

Hi there! I love this product. I am a wedding photographer and it has enhanced my portfolio immensely. The other lens I really love is the 50mm. This is a close second to that. It's fast, sharp and easy to use.

My best lens

I've shuffled along with my kit 24-105mm L for the past several years, and it was versatile and very good quality. The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM won't be as versatile but the quality is the very best I know. I don't normally shoot shallow DOF, so I will tend to shoot most pictures at higher apertures except in low light.

great lens for close up to portrait

After much research I decided on purchasing my first L lens. I had used a 35 mm film camera with a 50mm lens while in the Navy and found it suitable for most of the shots I was making. So the EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens seemed like the best choice for my first L lens. The EF 35mm 1.4 has been on my camera most of the past year. It is great for landscape, flowers, and portraits. Maybe it was because of the 1.6 conversion that makes a 35mm on my 7D look more like a 56mm or maybe because I do not make really close up portraits, but I have not seen the distortion that is so noticeable in many portraits made with wide angle lenses. There was a learning curve with this lens when shooting at it closest distance. I now ensure the right things are in my narrow depth of field when shooting those closer subjects and using the more open f-stops (like 1.4). My next buy will be an EF 12 II extension tube to get a little closer to making the EF 35mm 1.4L into a macro lens.

Lovely Lens.

This is a really lovely piece of glass. Just might be my favorite lens to use on a APS-c crop sensored body (roughly 55mm there) I like the look of this setup over shooting with the 50 1.4 on a full frame body. It's the most "cinematic" looking lens to me with lovely bokeh. So much so that I thought there may be more blades in the diaphram construction, similar to a cine lens. But no, it's constructed of 8 blades as most of the nicer Canon lenses are. It's very sharp too. Especially at f2.8 and smaller. If you need a fast prime in this focal length, this lens, albeit expensive, it a nice choice. Sigma makes a new 35 1.4 that's considerably cheaper and very well reviewed. That one may be worth a look too.

Favorite Lens

SOLID at 1.4. That's all I need to say. But really, this lens is a work of art. Perfect size, weight and the images it produces are gorgeous. Great all-around lens on full-frame. Highly Recommended!

Excellent Lens

Everything you need for a 35mm lens, this one has it. It is super fast in auto focus and is really useful in low light as well. I use it for documentarian photographies and it just gives me constant good results when I am cruising around Boston. Excellent lens.

Meet my new favorite lens!

I have to be honest. I first bought the 35mm 2.0 because I was trying to save a few bucks. It did not take me long to realize that it was not the lens for me. So I confidentially ordered the 35mm 1.4 and it was LOVE at first shot! It nails focus on almost every shot and the bokeh is enough to make me swoon :) I can definitely say that since the lens arrived on my doorstep and I put it on my 7d, that it has not come off my camera! I can't wait to use it at my next wedding at the end of this month! It will probably be on my camera for almost the whole wedding, other than the ceremony! I would recommend this lens to anyone! I am a portrait and wedding photographer and I have found my new favorite piece of equipment!

Absolutely outstanding!!!

I have been photographing for 45 (forty-five) years and have used an assorted array of equipment, mostly in 35mm format. Without question this lens is magnificent in IQ, handling and brightness. It is usually mounted to my 5D Mark III for street shooting, close-ups and informal portraits. Because I'm working with a FF camera, the added weight and bulk of this lens is inconsequential. It balances very nicely and has great perch for your hand. Manual focusing is also impeccable. In short, this is one of my two dream lenses (the other being Canon's 135mm f/2 L USM). Neither lens has stabilization, but that is a non factor, as I have decades of shooting w/o it and know what works. The out-of-focus (bokeh for you "younguns" who prefer using Japanese) is very, very good. So, the 35mm FL works much better (for me) versus the 50mm FL, which I feel is too tight on the street and for scene and scenic shooting.

Best Lens in my Bog

I rented this lens first to try it out and I just didn't want to send it back. The lens produces super sharp images and gorgeous bokeh. I use it for both photography and video and have had amazing results. This lens stays on my camera 95% of the time.
