Wow! Great!

I love this little lens. For the price it is the best ( value ) lens that I have to date. I noticed in public people take much less note of me with this lens on my 60D as compared to my 17-50mm which I had hoped would be the case. It focuses at a closer distance than many other Canon lenses which is very nice at close quarters like seated at a restaurant table, optically is wow very sharp & colors pop. Everything about it has surpassed my expectations by a large margin. Though it has not...

Though it has not replaced my 17-50 2.8 I.S. as my most used lens it will stay tucked in my bag and always be at hand - its sooo tiny. Well that's my 2¢ based on this last week. Wrote this because other reviews here have really helped me so I'm trying to give back in return.

A bit of a let down

I bought this lens for its weight, size and price. Based on the reviews,it seemed quite good, but using it is a bit of a let down. It is certainly small and light, but the autofocus problem for the models sold with the first firmware is indeed annoying and it is present even when used with a Canon EOS3. Even more annoying is that to install the firmware upgrade one MUST use either a 1Dx, or a 5DIII equipped with latest firware upgrade, or a 650D (which is being recalled for other reasons). Th

Even more annoying is that to install the firmware upgrade one MUST use either a 1Dx, or a 5DIII equipped with latest firware upgrade, or a 650D (which is being recalled for other reasons). This means that one has to go to Canon to do it. But even once upgraded the lens remains pretty flat in terms of performance . Yes, the autofocus is fast, but the focus is soft, color rendition is flat and bokeh is basically non existing. So overall, I would say the price is not that good, because you get exactly what you pay for.

A feat little lens. I use it when I want more punch than I get with a zoom.

I needed this lense

By

This prime was what I needed to photograph a play, on stage, from a fixed position without using flash.

Wonderful lense for the price.

By

I bought this lens as a walk around lens and for street photography since it is so inconspicuous and very light. I have L lenses but when I put this on a smaller Rebel camera I am very happy with it's clarity and versatility. It is a real bargain plus pairing it with a Canon 12extension tube gives you an awesome macro lens.

Very Sharp

By

This is one of the sharpest lenses I own. That said, I own the EF 24-105mm f4/L IS USM lens. It competes quite nicely with that lens. Enough said.

Great Walk-Around Lens

By

This thin lens is the perfect walk-around lens for a full frame camera and a decent portrait lens for a APS-C camera. Just add a protection filter and a thin sun shade, and you are ready to cruse the boulevard.

Amazing buy

By

I have been a photographer for 40 years. When I saw the price on this lens, I didn't expect much but bought it anyway. I love it. Sharp and great color. I leave it on most of the time now.

Great Little Lens!

By

This lens just arrived yesterday and I think it will be just perfect for my purposes. I wanted a small lens to put on my 60D that had a large aperture ,a close focusing distance and did a decent job of rendering backgrounds out of focus. It allows me to fit my camera in my small purse/camera bag with room for the other essential I need. I great lens for everyday use and traveling light.

Canon Best Pancake Lens

By

This is the best Canon pancake lens. Very small, light weight, yet the build quality is excellent, with metal mount and good glass. Image is very sharp, even at F2.8. Focus is very fast, even in live view AF mode. With the STM, you may override focus manually at anytime. The only issue is the manual focus - this is not a true manual focus, when you rotate the ring, the motor will drives the lens, at the same time it make some hmm noise, that is not good when recording video as the mic pick up the noise. Also the lens will not retract when the camera is powered off. So far, I am very happy with this lens.

Great lens, great price

By

I keep this lens attached to my 5D Mk III most of the time. It's sharper, smaller, lighter, and less expensive than my 50mm f/1.4, and so I'm only missing the low light performance.

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

Questions about this item:

Manish P  Does this lens work on EOS 30D?
STAN M  Yes, but it will not be a 40mm lens because of the 1.6 crop factor. The 30D is a AP-s chip, so the lens wound be equivalent to a 64mm lens. It will work well for a portrait lens. I love this lens on my 5D classic.
Manish P  Stan, So, with that equivalent being 64mm lens, do I sacrifice anything that the lens has to offer?

Shopper  Will this lens fit a Canon Rebel XS/EOS 1000D camera?
ROB C  In my experience, all Canon EF lenses fit Canon's SLR and DSLR cameras. I have an old Canon Rebel 2000 that uses film and my EF lenses work fine with it. Hope this helps.
