Happy so far

By

from Hollywood, FL  -  Casual Photographer

Great in low light. I have used it indoors without flash.DOF is tight.Nice bokeh. I'm still learning to use it, but I am happy with the results so far. Decent quality build over less expensive Canon products. Wish it came with a hood. Overall nice lens.

Once the focus blows, you can pay more

By

from Minneapolis, MN  -  Photo Enthusiast

I am an enthusiast who is in the process of moving into the semi-pro caetgory. I bought the lens in 2012 just before spring portrait season was about to ramp up. The focus was fast, and the images were generally very good. I was able to get shots in low light on my APS-c sensor and I was getting sharp subjects with creamy backgrounds as intended. I will say that in the two years I have had the lens, some of my favorite pictures have come through this piece of glass. So why only 1 star? Because I have taken care of this lens. It sits in a well-padded, very temperate cubicle in my high-quality bag. Because I am only semi-pro, the lens doesn?t come out all that often, and the majority of my shooting is with my kit zoom lens. Given all the love and fairly little use, one would expect this lens to last. One?s expectations would not be met. I pulled this lens out for a nice self-portrait that I needed for a website. I dialed it in to f2. I focu? foc? FO!!! No focus. The ring moves. The lens is stuck. I don't have my picture. By the time I get the lens back from service, the blooms will have fallen off the trees. I will not get my shot. Fortunately this didn't happen with a client in front of me. Most days, you only get one chance to make the shot. I took my shot with the KIT LENS for crying out loud. If you buy this lens, know that even a spare body won?t help if your focus ring is in rigor. A quick web search for "canon 50mm focus stuck" reveals that this is a VERY common issue with the lens. My contact with Canon revealed that they were glad to take more of my money to fix it.

good lens but easy to break

By

from Fremont, CA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

One small impact on the front element and the lens can be focus stuck. Worst case: MF will also not work. It's a flaw in the design which bends internal parts. There is already a redesigned part to fix that problem but you never know when the design change was flown in production. To prevent damages: buy the hood and keep it always on. It will protect the lens system of any impact.

My Most Expensive Piece of Glass

By

from New Orleans  -  Photo Enthusiast

I have just purchased my most expensive piece of glass yet. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens. Before owning this lens, I have owned The 50mm f/1.8 lens. I loved it, I shot my 2012 Graduation with it. However, it is a Prime Lens. So you must only have certain amount of Focal Length. Nevertheless, I opted for this lens based on my experience with the little brother of this lens. I was able to take some test shots, and immediately noticed how well it performed in low light situations. Also, this lens gets beautiful Depth Of Field. I really like how solid this lens feels, as with the former, it was mainly made of plastic. In conclusion, I am really excited about my new piece of glass, and I highly recommend it to any photographer that's serious about their pictures. This lens is a Must.

Excellent Portrait and Low Light Lens

By

from Florida  -  Pro Photographer

Good value compared with the more expensive 1.2 lens. Smooth performance and sharp focus. Unobtrusive and versatile lens that is especially nice for portraits and low light situations.

Nifty Fifty

By

from SC  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Using it for auto show presently, and will be using it more for street photography. Like it much better than the 50mm 1.8, because of the metal mounting plate and the fact that the lens hood attaches to the body and not the element. Great deal at Adorama.

Sharp photos in low light!

By

from Scottsdale, AZ  -  Casual Photographer

I am very impressed with this lens! I can get sharp, crisp photos in low light and in any light, really. It took some getting used to that I can't zoom...but the quality of the photos make up for it.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
KATHY G  I love this lens, but wish I would have bought the 135mm for portraits, but there is a big difference in the price. The dpof is great. It took me a few times playing around with it to figure out the best distance for better dpof. I am an amateur photographer, but also a perfectionist. I would recommend this lens, but wish it had image stabilization.
frances j  does this lens come with both end caps?
Holly K  Yes.
