This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers.
This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses) and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer.
In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range.

Took a few shots with this on a dance recital, and was amazed by the focus and sharpness. Was thinking of upgrading the 18-55 and 55-250 combo to 18-135 and selling the combo after. Now have to rethink if I want to let this one go.
Great lens! If you are looking for a multi purpose lens with great capability but you are not a pro photographer this is the lens for you. It is definently a great sarter lens for any body! Smooth focus ring, great zoom, clarity make this a excellent beginners lens! I use this lens offten!
This lens is awesome! For the price I don't think it can be beat! I've only owned it for 3 months. Build quality I'd give it 4 stars. Image quality 5 starts. If it lasts a long time it's worth every penny! If it falls apart soon then no. The mtf charts (I have limited knowledge on these) but look very good & I may be wrong but close to the "L" series lens. Now I know the build quality is not & it's slower than the "L" series. The images I get from this lens looks close to me! The Bokeh may not be as good but it's not bad. Focus is fast & accurate. Very light & easy to handle. Good image quality from 55 to 250mm & all aperture are acceptable! If you are on a budget then grab it! Love it!
This lens can capture amazing detail at a distance. I love it. I really like how I can get a beautiful, soft blurred background and yet have every last fine detail of my subject stand out. For example, at the zoo, I was able to get beautiful images of animals where you can see all the fine details of their feathers or fur, making you want to reach out and touch the photo. The image stabilization feature really helps a lot. I can capture very sharp photos of fast-moving objects, even while zoomed all the way in and handholding the camera. It has been fun to take pictures of faraway objects and look at them later, to discover details that I couldn't see with the naked eye at the time. If you like to take photos of animals or fill the frame with distant details, this is a good lens.
I would highly recomend this lense to a sarting photographer or photo enthusiast. It has been my main lense for 2yrs. The manual focus on this lens is super smooth almost glassy. I'm not a photographer but a enthusiast and if you are looking for a pro lense then may be a lense with L glass would be better, but for me I does a superb job!
I am a professional photographer, but I bought this lens for my wife. She has a Canon SL1. It's easy for her to use and has a good range. I wish it was a little faster for low light situations. If you plan to shoot indoor sports like basketball or volleyball, you will probabley need a faster lens. For the price, however, it's a good long lens for amateur shooters.
I bought this product refurbished (D grade), and so far it appears indistinguishable from a new product. It has a good zoom range, and has decent autofocus. I ended up purchasing this after considering the IS 70-300 mm lens. It seemed a better value, and I like being able to use manual focus when in autofocus mode.
Just getting into photography and hope to have a great new hobby by the time I retire in a year or so. Product is light and sharp however it would be nice to have a lock on the lens like my 18-135 does so that the zoom locks in place when being carried around on the camera. Appears to be a nice lens given the instant rebate and "kit" pricing. Unfortunately I'm a beginner so I really don't have any technical knowledge to share.
Light weight, fast focus
I own this lens and use with T2i , i do mostly out door nature pix and find this lens light weight and good for close ups and short distances, i am not a professional so i dont know all the correct terms but the pictures are sharp and color is good, also the lens covers a lot of ranges so i leave it on my camera most of the time..so this is a good overall lens for everyday use ,
