Best portrait lens at Price

Bought this lens for portrait purpose. And this will be the best portrait lens I have used in the price range. I was using Nifty - Fifty. This lens has really good color reproduction. And bokeh are really nice and smooth. I totally recommend this lens for portrait.

Perhpas the best Canon value

By

from Arlington Heights, IL  -  Photo Enthusiast

Back when camera stores had camera pros a guy suggested this lens for me, a budding photo junkie, rather than the thrice as expensive zoom I was convinced I required. It remains my favorite lens and everything else seems too expensive or too limited by comparison. If you are new to prime shooting or looking for your first lens purchase after the kit lens this would be a great choice. The 50 1.8 is also a very good value being cheaper than this so if you are on a tight budget you should have that too, but if at all possible spend the extra for the 85. It works on full frame and cropped cameras.

FANTASTIC Lens! Portraits, close-ups

By

from Los Angeles, CA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I just got into headshot photography, and let me tell you.. I'm head over heels with this lens. The depth of field is shallow, which totally melts the background. Beautiful bokeh. There's a long-standing debate between 50mm and 85mm for portraits, but I think the 85 is better: less distortion, and you have to be a comfortable distance from your subject to get a good shoulders-up shot. If you're low on cash, the nifty fifty 1.8 will probably do a nice job, but the 85 will take you to the next level imo. Also, I'm going to use this for tight closeups when shooting dramatic video. Should be able to get some nice focus on eyes and stuff, while keeping the background and even other parts of the face slightly out of focus.

The Best Canon Lens

By

from TN  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This is by far the absolute Canon lens I have ever purchased and owned. I own several L lenses, and they do not even compare. This is by far the best portrait lens I have had the opportunity to shoot with. I highly recommend this lens.

"L" lens quality.

By

from Central, NJ  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Best lens for the price. An "L" quality lens as far as I'm concern. Wide open @ F1.8 it's a bit soft at corners, with some slight purple fringing throughout. But stopped down to F2.5 all those disappears. Plus fast focusing. The only negative is the minimum focus distance. Better than the 24-105mm @ 85mm in almost all aspects.

Wish I Would Have Bought It Sooner

By

from Anchorage, AK  -  Photo Enthusiast

This lens has allowed me to take my photography to the next level. I was worried that it would be a little long for portraits on my crop sensor (Canon Rebel T3i), but I love it. It's tight for inside portraits if you're trying to get more than headshots, but most of what I do is outside so that's not an issue. The bokeh is also lovely. I would highly recommend this! You won't be disappointed.

Really Nice Lens for the Price

By

from Hudson Valley, New York  -  Photo Enthusiast

I'm an amateur photographer working mostly with models for portfolio images. My primary lenses are Canon 24-105 f4L and 70-200 F4L IS. I bought this lens as a refurb from Adorama, mostly for the extra stop and a half and I've been very happy with the results. Between this lens and my 50mm f1.4 I am able to get some outrageous headshots with really nice bokeh.

This is a camera you want to keep

By

from Washington, DC  -  Photo Enthusiast

I have a bunch of other prime lens, but this is the only one that I didn't sell. On my Canon 6D, it has the perfect 85mm focal length for portrait. The USM is fast and smooth. In low light shooting, it gets job done. I also like the bokeh created by this lens, which is creamy and smooth. The only down side about this length is that you will end up with very obvious purple fringe and chromatic aberration if directly shooting objects that have hard sun light behind it. But, again, you should avoid shooting that in the first place. Other than that, this length has very good optical performance and feels great in hand. Although it's not in the "L" grade, it's the only non-L lens that survives in my camera bag.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
RAUL H  Great lens for portraits.
Sylvia G  Does this lense work with the EOS Rebel XT? I am getting mixed info?
MARY B  I use the Canon EF 85mm lens with a Canon 50D and I love it...sharp shots and fast, great in low light situations. There was some adjustment to not having a zoom, but now it's my favorite lens. Can't say how it will work with the EOS Rebel XT.
Shopper  does this lens have image stabilizer?
MICHAEL S  It does not have image stabilization. I bought it for my daughters volleyball indoors and it did great for the low light high speed photos.
