The Vixia HF200 is a great little HD camcorder. I bought it for simple event recording. I initially had the standard-def Canon FS200, but figured I'd upgrade to an HD cam without having to pay too much more. I would've preferred the Canon HFS100 instead for the higher pixel count, but I honestly couldn't justify paying an extra $300 dollars for what I need it for. Some pros over the FS200: - HD footage (better than standard-definition) - External battery compartment, which allows you to purchase a battery with more juice (battery on FS200 is stored inside the camcorder) Some cons (in general): - Canon's "Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe" means you have to buy a shoe adapter if you want to use your existing standard size mount (e.g. external mic or light). However, external mics and lights are available for Canon's mini shoe. - Footage records to .MTS format, which requires an extra step to convert so that your video editor can read it. I really wish Canon would have chosen either .avi or .mpeg. - No focus ring (this is a consumer camera, so I'm stating this as a general con and not a complaint). All in all, this is a great buy for the money, as long as you aren't planning on shooting a full-length movie. The comfort of recording to SD cards means the end of the "tape-switch scramble" when filming 1-hour+ long events on just 1 camera. Just pop in a 16GB card (approx. $30 these days) and you're set.
