Designed for macro-lens, the LED light may be used with other types of lenses, but please take note of the following: Some lenses may turn after the installation of this macro ring LED light (which may affect camera focusing, with results being unsatisfactory). Please use manual focus with such a lens.
This is a continuous light unit, but turn off power when not in use due to high power consumption.

Very Good LED ringlight
This is a well-designed device for close shots, it provides permanent lighting for subjects. And you can adjust it three ways: all light, half left light, and half right light. With the power controller, you can choose two different power input modes: 2 AA batteries (I recommend that you use rechargeable batteries) or AC adapter input. Very useful for macro photographing. My set came with a Adapter for 67mm lens to :-)

Not bright, very limited usefullness
Not very bright. I bought this for macro photography and its barely adequate for some uses. Not useful at all for fill in light and its not bright at all, so its not a big aid in macrophotography.

Use the ring light for close up macro photography. The build is very solid inspire of light weight and seems very durable. The illumination can be set to Flash or constant on which is very useful. Put out a lot of light. I purchased it for use with a Nikon 105 mm f2.8 macro lense. For the price, I was very surprised at the high quality. I recommend it.
I sent it back as it did not work Adorama was great to work with!!
Better than I thought. It is sturdy and reliable. The only negative I might say is that the instructions could have been better written.
It's very easy to use. Flash sits in the hot shoe and the adapters fit your lenses nicely. It adds a white glare to your pictures. It's very bright and completely washes out your subject in closeup shots. Closeups were a selling point in the description, but I have to back up several feet to keep from washing the shot. That in concert with the white glare forces you to clean up your picture with a photo editor.
Easy to adapt to various diameter lenses. Great for the price. I have been using this Macro ring light to photograph bugs in my garden during daylight hours. You have to be a bit carefull not to cross the threads when using the adaptors. I would like to see the adapter rings made out of aluminum but this would only add to the price. The various lenses included with the kit provide for some unusual photos. Overall, I have no complaints about this ring light when you consider the price. This ring light has the same if not more features as a $400 set.
Works well with primes and lenses with low f-stop. Cannot work if an extension tube is used for macro work. Need dedicated macro lens for best results. Need to be near subject. It works well under limited conditions.
Bought mostly for Macro use. That works.
Love that it can be a continuous light source and not just traditional flash - i can see why people may say it's a bit weak - but for macro photography it's great. A good value.
I purchased this flash unit because it was cheap. But it did not sync with my Nikon D3100. It might sync with higher end nikons, but I wouldn't recommend you to try it... read more reviews first. It will work with constant light mode as the camera's light meter will adjust to the light and that also decreases your eye-strain in low light situations, but it will consume your batteries like candy! Think twice before buying it!
The Flashpoint VL-48 appears to be a repackaged Marco RF550 ring flash. What the description does not tell you is that it is for Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic DSLRs. They also make a Model RF-550E for Sony. The flash does not sync well with the Pentax DSLR, but will work in the manual(always on) battery burning mode.
