About G-Technology

The G-Technology's 8TB G-SPEED eS 4-BAY RAID Array with four 2TB Enterprise Drives is an economical, high-performance, high-storage solution designed for professional video content creators. This compact and whisper-quiet G-SPEED eS sports a 3Gbit eSATA interface great for transmitting the large amounts of data demanded by video files. It features the maximum memory per G-Speed eS with four 2TB hot-swappable Hitachi Ultrastar 7200 RPM SATA drives. With this Enterprise-quality setup, you definitely have the memory you need to store video and to speedily and easily access it for streaming.

Since an eSATA host adapter for connecting the unit to your computer is not included, you have two options for deciding on one. If you decide to use another company's port multiplier aware eSATA host adapter, you can configure the G-SPEED eS as only a software RAID or a JBOD. As your second option, if you use G-Technology's PCIe 4x RAID controller, you will have a much greater variety of RAID options. The controller allows you to configure your G-SPEED eS as a RAID 0,1,5,10 or JBOD.

As such, you have more flexibility in choosing the right configuration for your work, whether you need more storage, extra reliability, simultaneous access to video files, or some ratio between the three. When used with this controller, it supports multi-stream SD, ProRes 422 and uncompressed HD workflows. For example, a single G-SPEED eS used with the G-Technology controller supports up to four simultaneous streams of ProRes422 HQ or one stream of uncompressed 1080/60i. Moreover, in terms of just storage capacity, one terabyte of memory holds up to 84 hours of HDV 1080i, 17 hours of DVCPRO HD 1080/60i, 13 Hours of 8 bit SD, 10 hours of ProRes 422HQ, 10 hours of 10 bit SD and 2.25 hours of HD 1080/60i.

When used with G-Technology's controller, you can setup your RAID configurations and monitor your system via an easy-to-use, web-based graphic user interface. Accessed via any internet browser on your computer, this simple GUI can easily keep track of your RAID's performance and, in the event of a disk failure, have the G-SPEED eS alert you via email.

Along with this safety mechanism, the G-SPEED eS features locks for each drive, a sturdy aluminum casing and two internal fans for preventing the hard drives from overheating. In addition, the G-SPEED, itself, will sound audible alarms in case a disc fails, the internal temperature nears 140deg.F, a fan stops, a fan spins too slowly to cool the system, or when the enclosure is improperly disconnected from the G-Technology PCIe RAID controller.

Beyond all these exceptional features, should you ever decide 8TB of memory isn't enough, you also have the option of scaling up. If you use the G-Technology PCIe RAID controller, you can connect up to four 8TB G-SPEED eS enclosures at once. With another company's host adapter, you might be able to do the same, depending on what it allows. If you do go for the maximum amount of scalable memory, you can connect four enclosures of 8TB apiece for a total of 32TB of memory! All told, the 8TB G-SPEED eS is an economical, high-storage, high-performance RAID hard-drive array designed with all the right features to keep you, the professional video content creator, busily at work!

Fast, Easy Setup, and Reliable

Used for video RAID with a hotswap drive, that has been extremely reliable and faster than many other options I have used at much higher prices.

Most Liked Negative Review

It's good.. but should have been better!

I have been working with a 4TB model for four years now, mostly for editing HD video in Avid Media Composer. I'm reasonably happy with the speed performance, but the enclosure itself is randomly shutting down due to poor wiring on the On/Off switch. I find that very disappointing in a product at that price. Another limitation comes to light when I connect it to my MBP. I can't make use of the hardware raid, as It is depended on the PCIe card which has no Express option to use in Laptops.

This products produces the data speeds needed for 720p and 1080i broadcast production

By

We're using the G-SPEED eS in a daily production environment at a commercial broadcast television station for HD (720p and 1080i) editing with Final Cut Pro via a Blackmagic Multibridge Pro 2. Disk speed and reliability have been second-to-none. We have two of these arrays for online editing of commercials and station promotion. In the past we've had problems with other brands, data corruption or complete loss, but we've been using these drives for more than a year with no issues. I would highly recommend the G-SPEED eS to anyone working in commercial television/broadcast post-production. They're well worth the price tag.

Great product overall, excellent build quality

By

The G-Speed eS delivers great performance especially for editing HD video. Excellent build quality. The single eSata connection is limiting vs other models that also have USB & FireWire. The addition of a ThunderBolt port would be helpful as well.

Fits our needs perfectly!

By

This unit has been a reliable workhorse for our non-linear editing, motion graphics and archiving needs. It is fast, quiet and very well made. The reasonable price sealed the deal for us. With a shrinking budget, this option has been a very wise use of our funds.

Biggest and fastest media storage solution out there.

By

The G-SPEED es is the fourth G-TECH array we own in addition to a G-RAID, G-RAID mini and a G-SAFE that we use for backing up critical data. I run a boutique media production company and produce media in various formats, including 1920x1080 DVCProHD video and system-intensive audio and music projects using ProTools. I purchased the G-SPEED es as the first in a line of es drives on which to store all of my business' media, projects and documents, but so far, the single 12-TB es is doing the trick solo. The es performs exceedingly well across the board, giving us reliability and blazing speed in both our workflow and file management activities. The added comfort of knowing that our data is safe, thanks to G-TECH's commitment to quality, is also huge. I would be hard-pressed to come up with a better all-in-one solution for bulky media storage, processing, and access.
