You can have a ball head attached to the tripod and it will still fit in the carry sac. The straps are helpful when you are carrying other gear with you.

I was looking for a light-weight tripod and opted to try the 8270. Thus far it has proven itself to be stable, easy to use and very pleasureable to carry. I use an aluminum model and will continue to do so when I am close to my truck, but when there is distance involved, the MT8270 is the tripod of choice.
