I did a lot of research and asked around - forums, magazines, etc. and everyone said the same thing ... pricey yes but an investment that will last for years and years. I've learned the hard way that when it comes to the gear that you need to count on, get the best you can afford -- it performs and will last for years. My biggest lens is a Canon 70-200mm F2.8L -- if you use bigger lenses on a regular basis take a look at the Gitzo GT3540.I've shaved a pound off my load -- and with my knees that's important - this tripod is incredibly stable and versatile whether I'm shooting a long exposure in high winds or doing macro work in the studio -- ummm that's actually my dining room -- the Gitzo delivers on all it's promises and they back their product with a lifetime warranty. I coupled this with an Op/Tech tripod strap[...] and it's so lightweight it's incredible. A tripod doesn't do you any good if you leave it at home or back n the car because it's too heavy to lug around. A winning combination! I've no regrets, highly recommend the product. Worth every penny!

• When Gitzo launched the Mountaineer tripods in 1994, they were the world's first carbon fiber tripods. Since then, they've set the standard for performance and quality. The main feature of the range is the 6X carbon fiber tube, made of a unique structure of 6 crossed layers, that maximizes rigidity, vibration absorption, and lightweight performance. • 6X tubes have a high density structure made of top quality ultra-thin carbon fibers (7µm or 0.007 mm). Built-in Anti Leg Rotation is now a feature of the whole carbon fiber range. Mountaineer tripods have been further improved with features and details that increase performance, versatility, and quality. • G-Lock is a leg locking system that increases system rigidity by 20%, and allows quicker and stronger leg locking. Gitzo has added a solid machined aluminum upper disc with a new Safe Lock material that cuts vibration, and improves the grip between tripod and head. The upper disc is totally new. The 1/4"-3/8" reversible screw has been redesigned for more reliable functionality. All new Mountaineer tripods come with a convenient anti-dust bag for storage and packing. • This tripod is recommended for lightweight camcorders, spotting scopes, and DSLRs with lenses ranging from 200 mm to 300 mm. This series features excellent load capacity endurance, and good torsional rigidity. Series 2 is the ideal solution for photographers looking for a solid tripod without sacrificing weight.
