The Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber 4 Sections Tripod (Long) is designed to reach eye-level when fully extended. It is recommended for professional cameras with 300mm lenses (up to a maximum of 400mm). It features Carbon exact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT3542L has a load capacity of 46.29lbs, extends to a maximum height of 70.07" and folds down to 23.23" for transport.
The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 6.3". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.
The rapid column can easily be inverted for an alternative shooting angle or low level macro work.
This built-in accessory allows you to hang a stabilizing weight (e.g. a full camera bag or a sand/water bag) from the bottom of the tripod center column. It is useful with long/heavy lenses, on uneven ground or in windy conditions.
It allows you to easily change worn out rubber feet or to fit other accessories, such as spiked feet or snow/sand shoes.
Revolutionary Carbon exact tubes are even stiffer to maximize rigidity and image stability. Carbon exact optimizes the fibre composition for each tube size, using HM (High Modulus) carbon fibre in the narrower tubes to make them stiffer. The tube diameters are also optimized: the final leg section of a 4 section Series 1 tripod is now 22.5% thicker than its predecessor.
It has been redesigned from the inside out; G-lock Ultra is smoother and softer to use and is designed to reduce dust and grit from getting in.
Ground Level Set (with Unlocking Ring)
The Ground Level Set mechanism permits to remove the center column to get the camera closer to the ground. A single simple unlocking ring under the column's upper disc frees the column while keeping the upper disc solidly in place on the tripod (Patent Pending).
Leg Angle Selector with Spring
Offers large grip space and features a built-in spring to help speed up switches between the 3 leg angles.

prompt delivery and good service a nice product.
I spent alot of time deciding which tripod was best for my new 500f4IS, finally realizing that I must protect my investment and not take chances with my older gear that was risky tripod support. I needed sturdy, tall enough, and lightweight, knowing that is hard to come by. I bit the bullet and chose over another competitor because I knew Gitzo was always considered the best, and it weighed a half lb. less than the other. Weight is a deciding factor for me. The Gitzo beauty arrived 10 days later, and I admired the precision I never had on my old gear. The leg locks design is brilliant. I was a little disappointed that is was about 1 lb. heavier than what I read. And it does fold up rather clumsily, because Gitzo has improved the sturdiness of the leg attachment to the head, making it now larger than the older models at the head base. Folding the legs in is a slight difference than before. I would have preferred the smaller head plate, but I may get used to it. The quality makes up for these two factors, though, so it's growing on me. Now a triangle rather than circular base. Another factor for me was will it fit in my carry on suitcase? YES! At 23 inches. Very important, no way would I pack this beauty in a checked suitcase. My old tripod did not fit and I had to carry a smaller tripod on trips, which just did not work well for my older 500f4IS weight. The height is perfect. I am 5'7 and worried it was too short, but I'd say it is perfect for anyone under 5'10. If you need an extra inch but don't want the weight of the taller tripod like the XLS, just add a panorama level and a tall ballhead to this one, giving you 5 more inches. The legs are sturdy, and so far set up is a breeze, I also bought the Induro BHL2 ballhead to go with it, which is outstanding also. I feel like I finally have the right stuff, and have made photog life easier, with precision up a notch.
