About Canon A1400

Canon PowerShot A1400 is a compact, easy-to-use camera that retains the familiar feel of a classic point-and-shoot. Its large grip is easy to grasp and comfortable to hold, while the Optical Viewfinder is ideal for capturing photos in bright sunlight. A 16.0 Megapixel sensor and the DIGIC 4 Image Processor deliver stunning images with amazing detail. The 5x Optical Zoom with 28mm Wide-Angle lens brings you in close for grand shots, and Smart AUTO makes shooting beautiful images effortless, analyzing the scene and choosing the optimal settings from 32 predefined shooting situations. When the fun is on the move, capture it all in 720p HD Video using the dedicated movie button. The PowerShot A1400 runs on two convenient AA-alkaline batteries, readily available when and where you need it, and the new ECO Mode conserves power so you will still be ready to take photos long after the party is over.

The PowerShot A1400 digital camera gives you a choice that's getting increasingly hard to find on digital cameras today. It's equipped with an Optical Viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen. Many photographers prefer this classic, familiar option that lets you simply hold the camera to your eye and shoot.

The camera's big, bright 2.7-inch LCD screen gives you a wealth of important information about the shot. However, using it to compose and focus requires that you hold the camera away from your body. Many people do this with one hand, arms away from the body, effectively creating camera shake that can distort a shot. Using the Optical Viewfinder helps ensure that the camera is held steady, and is an easy, familiar alternative to composing shots on an LCD screen. It's also useful in bright conditions when it might be difficult to see the monitor.

With the PowerShot A1400 digital camera's 16.0 Megapixels of resolution, your images are rich and clear, with textures and tiny details faithfully reproduced even at the long end of the 5x Optical Zoom. This high level of resolution is ideal for creating the largest prints, and allows you the flexibility to blow up and crop any section of an image to express your creativity. The DIGIC 4 Image Processor powers the camera's advanced systems and features, ensuring fast, reliable performance with low battery consumption.

Improvement over A1200

I bought this for the eye-level viewer, Canon seems to be the only kind that has this feature in this size & price range. The 5x zoom is a bonus. The camera is lightweight & compact and fits in a pocket. A fine all-purpose workhorse.

Prepariing to use the camera

In my 1st review I noted that interface cable does not come w/ camera. Contacted Adorama to purchase & they did not have one. Started downloading the software anyway so as to use card reader. Got a message that w/o interface cable the most appropriate software for the camera may not be available. Download process was slow. The installed software seems to want to upload from camera to computer using interface cable not card reader, so I still can't comment on image quality.

Decent point and shoot

from AZ  -  Photo Enthusiast

I purchased this camera to have in my pocketbook and to have when I do not want to bring the trusty Canon 40D with the rest of the gear. I also like having the quick access to a camera vs. unpacking the 40 from the backpack, great for quick snaps of the furbabies doing something silly or cute, and snapping some pics for eBay, etc. I liked the ability to put in a pocket and the viewfinder. This was one of the few that had a true viewfinder. I like the AA battery use, no need to carry a charger and a couple betties can always be stuffed in a bag or picked up. The wide angle zoom appeals to me too. I've snapped a few pics and uploaded and am pretty satisfied. While nothing will replace the 40 and the interchangeable lens…this is a very good camera for the convenience, ease of use, and the $$. Great little camera for a gift for someone to play and see if they want to get into photography and a DSLR.

Best bang for the buck!

from Mount Joy, PA  -  Photo Enthusiast

Pro: Uses AA batteries which are available everywhere. Optical viewfinder - rare in this type of camera. Extremely compact and portable. I buy them as gifts for my relatives and friends. Most important of all: Easy to use and takes great photos and videos. Cons: Shutter lag -which is normal for this type of camera.

Unbeatable for the price

from Waikoloa, HI  -  Pro Photographer

I got this for my wife, who has the worst luck with cameras. They just die, or they're too complex, or something. This is perfect! it's the only thing near it in price with an optical viewfinder (which she must have), batteries last a long time, the SD card plugs into her computer directly so no looking for cables, it's apparently tough as nails, fits in her purse, has very limited ways to screw up the controls, has a very brief delay before taking the pic (unlike the usual point-and-shoot, that waits until the photo is gone before triggering the shutter)..... Perfect! I might get one for my glovebox as a just-in-case. Adorama's service is as always exemplary; overnight shipping to Hawai'i really means three day, which is still a week better than anything else except maybe priority mail. I ordered a couple of days before Xmas as a last minute inspiration and it showed up day after, which is better than I expected. The zoom ratio is a little short, but what the heck; doesn't bother her any.

Only worth what you pay!

from Tennessee  -  Photo Enthusiast

Bought this camera to have a compact handy--wanted a viewfinder. The first camera malfunctioned and began getting vertical, colored lines across the screen. The number of lines increased, and I returned it to Canon. While I did get another replacement camera, I was out over $8 to pay to ship and insure it. I would not buy this camera again.

Love it for what it is.

from Buffalo, NY  -  Photo Enthusiast

I have several dslr. A range of lenses. Always wanted a camera that I can slip into my pocket, that will have a viewfinder, work on AA batteries. This camera fit the bill. This is a memory catcher, not for the pixel peeper.

Has a Viewfinder

from Arizona  -  Photo Enthusiast

The only feature I demand in a camera is a viewfinder. This about the only cheap camera with this feature. The viewfinder yields a small image, but is minimally acceptable. The performance and features are good.

Very small and light - ideal for pocket.

from scroggins, tx  -  Photo Enthusiast

Excellent image quality on auto setting. Ideal for everyday carry, and, best of all, it has an optical viewfinder.

Great range, great clarity

from Bishop, CA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Easy to learn Highly functional Great flash Wide angle Cheaper body...don't drop on hard surface, battery door opens. Flash takes a while to recharge. It is worth the money and THERE IS A VIEW FINDER.

Nice compact camera

from Monkton Vermont  -  Casual Photographer

I really like this little camera. It is very easy to use and seems to be built with quality despite it's low price. I especially like the optical sight viewer which it great when it is to bright outside to see the LCD well. This is a rare feature in a small camera nowadays. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the LCD viewer presents a picture that is a bit granular but it is more that adequate for viewing and editing shots before uploading to my computer of printer. It also would have nice if Canon had included an upload cable but for the small price I can't complain about that. The mini usb cable that I have for my cell phone works just fine.

Excellent camera for features & price

from SAN DIEGO  -  Casual Photographer

This camera takes all the hassles out of bringing all different batteries takes any AA's and eco battery saver is great. It also has a viewfinder you can see what your shooting outdoors or in bright light. All pic's and video look great. Easy to use point & shoot mistake free!

Questions about this item:

Shopper  on my cannon cameraA1400 I need to know what I press ton my camera to make pictures from the camera to the printer???
DIANNE P  It is a very basic camera. It will not send pictures to your printer wirelessly. It does not come with a data wire for connecting camera to PC or to printer, although it has a mini or micro USB port. So, you will need to get a connecting wire, or you will need to remove the SD card and use an SD cardreader to transfer the pictures to another device.
Andrea J  Is this good for action shots? I ride horses so i would like to get good pics of me and my sister jumping at shows :)
RAY P  I think there is too much of a delay between pressing the shutter release button and the actual release of the shutter; therefore, this is probably not the best camera for action shots. I must add that I really like the camera, though. As the resolution has been more and more refined over the last three models, I've bought them all--and happy with each in its time. I took a 7 megapixel model to Paris, and I am very happy with the results from this camera that I could just stuff in my pocket. One more thing: I prefer a camera with a viewfinder and a screen over one with just a screen: this one has both.
Shopper  does the video feature have a zoom facility?
RAY P  Yup; it does.
