About Canon 510 HS

The Canon PowerShot ELPH 510HS Digital ELPH Camera (Silver) is a slender 12.1Mp point-and-shoot that goes beyond the genre's suggested capabilities. Of course, you can just point the 510 at your subject and click for a great photo, but Canon gave this Powershot multiple other functions to explore for expressing your creativity and enjoying the fruits of your shooting.

When it comes to the various shooting modes and special scene modes you'll have numerous options for putting your mark on each image you take. Portrait helps to create an artistic feel so your subject pops. Toy Camera Effect makes your images look like they were taken with a pinhole camera, creating a vignetting effect. Another example is the Super Vivid mode for highly saturated scenes with ultra-bright colors.

When it comes to utilizing the Intelligent IS mode you have six different versions to choose from. Normal, Panning, Hybrid, Dynamic, Powered and Tripod each give you the right level of image stabilization for your specific situation, resulting in the steadiest image possible. Functions such as Face Detection and Smart Shutter also help to take the guess work out of shooting for well exposed faces and for fun and creative filters to add to your shots.

The camera's 1080p HD video capture function is a multifaceted feature. With the CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 4 Image Processor working together to capture high res footage that will look great on even the biggest HDTV, you'll have movies you'll be proud to show the entire family. And while shooting, the dedicated Movie Button starts and stops recording with just a touch - with no need to navigate through a menu or dial.

The ELPH 510 also supports iFrame, Apple's video format that boasts native support for both Mac and Windows video applications. This translates into no converting of video after you've shot. One more video feature is Canon's Movie Digest. This feature combines an entire day's worth of short clips into one video automatically and there's no post-production editing to be done. All you have to do is enjoy the memories.

When it comes to physical attributes, the 510 HS features a 3.2" PureColor touch screen LCD system. You'll see beautiful, rich color on the screen and enjoy the ease of touch screen navigation. The LCD also boasts a Touch Shutter function which allows you to release the shutter just by touching the screen. The lens on the 510 is a Genuine Canon 12x Zoom Lens. That's 12x optical zoom and a 28-336mm (35mm equivalent) wide-telephoto range. You'll be able to shoot groups, landscapes and everything in between with ease.

Great little camera

We bought this to replace a 6 year old 5MP 12x Optical Zoom with a 4x Digital Zoom. This camera with its 12.1 MP quality really impresses. The ease of point and shoot with great quality that surpasses my expectations. I haven't used the video features yet but I expect those to dazzle.

Could Have Been the Perfect Point and Shoot

This is my 4th Canon camera in 5 years. However, ever since introduction of the CMOS sensors in the Elph series, the quality of still shots has awfully declined. In a thorough side-by-side test of this 12MP camera and a 5MP camera from a very popular smartphone, the 510HS produced pictures with the same level of detail as the smartphone, which was very disappointing. That is why I have set the camera to shoot at half resolution and I am getting the same results. The battery life is also VERY VERY short with this camera. 20 minutes of continuous recording will run your battery completely dry. If you are taking pictures alone without flash, the battery will last you less than 3 hours. I have run out of battery at almost every event I have been to. Canon did a great job with the lens and the construction, as well as the software, but the image sensor and battery don't seem to hold up to the rest of the design. This is perhaps my last point-and-shoot from Canon.

The perfect pocket camera

Great combination of portability (pocket size) and optical zoom. You can't have the dslr with you at all times. This little gem is no problem.

So far I have enjoyed using the camera ,although I have not mastered it's use. It is light, portable and takes crisp, clear photos. It was a good buy. I use it to take pictures for reference when I paint in watercolor. I also like to take pictures when hiking and biking.

Loved and hated it

By

from Portland, OR

I have purchased this camera twice. The first time I wanted a compact point and shoot to use when I didn't want to carry my dslr. I was able to take great pictures on vacation (well until the extremely short battery ran out and I did not have a backup yet). Then, I dropped it in the sand and got sand in the lens. I decided to buy a new one, and I have had a horrible time with it. At almost every setting, bright, regular, and low light settings, my pictures have come out completely overexposed. I have changed settings, got the pictures to turn out for a couple of shots only to have the next ones become overexposed. It has been completely frustrating. Planning to send it back and reconsider what to do next.

disappointing

By

from Rawlins, WY

takes good video, average quality photos - but the control which zooms (which was why I purchased it) sticks and in spite of sending it in for repair to fix the problem, the problem continues. This makes the advantage of having a 300 mm zoom in such a tiny body often unusable until the photo moment is long past. Sad about that
