Canon SL1 Features

  • 18MP CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor: High resolution, low-noise imaging and fast performance speed, including 4 fps continuous shooting, is provided by the combination of the Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor and 18MP CMOS sensor
  • 3.0" Clear View II Touchscreen LCD Monitor: A 3.0" Clear View II Touchscreen LCD monitor with 1,040k-dot resolution provides clear composition and playback viewing even in bright light. Its smudge-resistant coating keeps the monitor clear
  • Full HD 1080 Video Capture: Full HD Movie mode supports Movie Servo for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects during recording. When shooting video with one of Canon's STM lenses, Movie Servo AF takes advantage of the lens' stepping motor (STM) for smooth and quiet continuous autofocus
  • Compact Form Factor: The Rebel SL1 is a particularly compact and lightweight DSLR, weighing approximately 13 oz
  • 9-point Autofocus System: A 9-point AF system (including a high-precision dual-cross center point) provides fast and accurate autofocus performance when shooting with the viewfinder. The Center AF point is AF cross-type at f/5.6, Center AF point is vertical line-sensitive at f/2.8
  • Hybrid CMOS AF II: The Hybrid CMOS AF System is utilized when shooting photos and video in Live View. Combining two different kinds of AF-phase and contrast detection-continuous focus tracking becomes faster and more accurate than ever before in Live View
  • ISO Range: An ISO Range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) provides low-noise capture in low light situations and saturated colors in bright conditions
  • Continuous Shooting: The Rebel SL1 offers continuous shooting rates of 4 fps for up to 7 consecutive RAW files or 28 full resolution JPEG files
  • Video Snapshot: With the Video Snapshot feature, the SL1 captures short video clips (of 2, 4 or 8 seconds) and combines them automatically into one video file as a snapshot or highlights album. With no editing needed after shooting, the compiled video is perfect for sharing online
  • Optical Viewfinder: The SL1 features an Optical Viewfinder with 0.87x magnification. Shooting with the optical viewfinder ensures steadier images and is effective when shooting in bright conditions when shooting rapidly
  • Scene Intelligent Auto: Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically delivers optimally adjusted photos and offers improved scene detection for better results when shooting at night
  • Special Scene Modes: Special Scene Modes including Kids, Food and Candlelight give you advanced presets to ensure the best possible photos under difficult shooting conditions
  • Creative Filters: Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images and can be seen in real time when shooting in Live View. Seven different creative filters are available: Art Bold Effect, Water Painting Effect, Miniature Effect, Fisheye Effect, Grainy B/W, Soft Focus and Toy Camera Effect
  • Effect Shot Mode and Background Simulation: The Effect Shot feature automatically captures two shots simultaneously: one without effect and one with a Picture Style or Creative Filter effect. This makes it easy to see how each effect changes the photo without compromising the original image
  • Lens Compatibility: The Canon Rebel SL1 is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses
  • Lens Aberration Correction: The SL1 features lens correction tools that compensate for specific lens characteristics that can affect image quality. Peripheral Illumination Correction adjusts light falloff in the corner of an image based on the type of lens being used
  • JPEG Resizing and In-camera Cropping: For images easier to email, the SL1 can resize JPEG files in-camera, while leaving the original image untouched. And because the SL1 creates large 18MP images, in-camera cropping creates files large enough for direct printing or other purposes

Excellent Product

I purchased this camera body to use primarily as a backup for my 5D MKII and secondarily as a smaller lighter less conspicuous body to use with the Canon 40 mm pancake lens. Had high hopes

I bought this camera, along with the Canon 40mm f/2.8 Pancake lens, for my wife's birthday. It seemed like a great little package, however we could not get a sharp image, regardless of the settings. I tried the lens on one of my Canon 5D Mark II's and it was fine, so it had to be the camera. Returned it for refund.

Very capable Camera

By

from Raleigh, NC  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this camera to have a lighter option for hiking and vacation over my 60D. Quality and ease of use were on par with the 60D from my experience. I won't go into a technical comparison as those reviews are well chronicled here and helped me to make my purchase decision. I coupled the SL1 with the new Tamron 16:300 and minimized the lens swapping exercise routine that was part of most vacations and outings. Performed well on a recent trip to Yosemite and the Oregon Coast. For the cost, weight and quality of photo's I would definitely recommend this camera.

Great Camera for this price !!!

By

from Sunnyvale, CA  -  Casual Photographer

This is my first DSLR and I'm already super excited about it. I bought this a month ago and I've already taken some good pictures out of this camera. This is very compact and also has a touchscreen LCD (though I don't use the touchscreen much) for viewing the images. There are several features in the manual mode as well for amateurs like me. I'm slowly trying them out. Even though it's small, when you attach the lens it looks bigger, but still smaller than other cameras. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the LCD screen is not flip-out, which Canon did away with (maybe to reduce the size of the camera). But this is really useful when you're shooting from a raised angle.

Fabulous camera for amateurs on the go

By

from Clarkston, MI  -  Pro Photographer

I'm a pro photographer, but I bought the SL1 for my wife. She LOVES it. She had a Canon SX40, but wanted to take her photos to the next level. She loves the touch screen LCD and the photos are fabulous. She is still in the "Auto+" stage, but she is learning to shoot manually with it.

Better, faster, lighter than my T1i

By

from San Francisco, CA  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought the EOS Rebel SL1 (100D in the rest of the world) as a replacement body for my T1i, which I will now resell. The weight difference was the initial motivation for making the change, but the SL1 has the newer DIGIC 5 processor and a slightly more coherent user interface. I've only had the camera for a few days, so I haven't yet explored all of its features. I tried it out yesterday at a baseball game using a Tamron 18-200 zoom lens, and was very satisfied with my ability to capture the action using the continuous shooting feature. The new body and the old lens makes a great combination for most of my photo needs, and I expect that the new body will soon gather many frequent flyer miles with me.

Great Camera in a Small Body

By

from Florida  -  Semi-pro Photographer

If you Canon shooter looking at mirrorless cameras for those times you want to carry a smaller, lighter camera then consider this the SL1 for the following reasons: 1. Coupled with Canons 40 mm lens, you have a unit which is less than 4-1/2" wide, 4" high and 4" deep and weighs 20.4 ounces. 2. Handles all EF lenses 3. View finder as well as live view 4. Controls in familiar locations plus adding touchscreen controls 5. Can shoot RAW

Don't let the small size fool you...

By

from white oak, tx  -  Pro Photographer

Bought to have with me at all times because of size and capabilities. Great little tool. Never be caught without a camera again. Sometimes its hard to lug around the larger cameras and lenses, but this one being so compact makes it nice to be ready for anything.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
boomer s  Small. Good image quality. I LOVE THIS CAMERA. It has exceeded all my expectations. Especially with the 40mm F2.8 pancake lens. So light. Sooooo good!
Deb H  what wide angle lens is compatible with canon sl1?
STEPHEN D S  The Canon Eos Rebel SL1 accepts any lens made for Canon DSLR cameras, either those for full frame or compact sensor. The ones which seem to balance best with this small and light body are the ES versions. However, for ultimate quality, the L-series lenses provide superb image quality at greater cost and weight. The standard EF series are a compromise between the two. I would say for travel and family photos, the ES series will do all you want, if you are willing to limit your prints to about 11X14 inches. EF lenses will get you to 16X20 easily, and the L- series will let you cover a wall or submit to a large sized magazine for full double-truck editorial photos. The L-series are eye of a gnat at 50 ft. quality. Otherwise, any secondary market lens created for a full or compact sensor Canon DSLR body will also fit and work well.
Fran S  I like the weight of this camera (as I have a neck/Bk problem) but I would like a camera w faster shots per second. Can you recommend on, without adding TOO much weight?
HENRY A  I think the camera is quite fast. Perhaps a ultra card would speed it up. I just returned from a European trip and I find the speed to be all I needed. The camera is designed to be small and light and not to be competitive with high dollar cameras. Of course a fast lens would increase the speed in low light.
