The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens from Canon is a lightweight APS-C format digital SLR camera with an 18MP CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 image processor. It is combined with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens for an effective range of wide-angle to standard focal length shooting options.
The EOS SL1 provides sharp details, accurate colors and low-noise imaging in compact form factor with easy to use interface. A 9-point autofocus system provides fast focusing when shooting with the viewfinder and Hybrid CMOS AF II increases autofocus speed and accuracy when shooting in Live View. The Rebel SL1 can continuously shoot up to 4 fps and its wide ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) allows for confident shooting in bright and low light situations.
A 3.0" Clear View II touchscreen LCD with 1,040k-dot resolution provides composition and playback viewing. Its intuitive touchscreen operation includes multi-touch operation with direct access to functions for settings changes and Touch Autofocus. Smudge-resistant coating keeps the monitor clear, even in bright sunlight. An optical viewfinder with 0.87x magnification is also available for stable eye-level composition.
Full HD 1080p at 30 fps and 24 fps is supported with Movie Servo for continuous autofocus during shooting. Manual exposure is provided in video mode and 60 fps is possible when shooting at 720p HD. A built-in mono microphone with manual audio level adjustment is provided and Video Snapshot with editing is supported.
Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically makes the optimal camera adjustments based on scene recognition and improved scene detection is particularly helpful when shooting night scenes. Advanced imaging features such as Effect Shot mode and background Simulation are available and Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images and can even be viewed in real time during Live View shooting. Special Scene Modes including Kids, Food and Candlelight let you set the type of shot you want and have the camera do the rest.
The EOS Rebel SL1 is compatible with the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. It is paired here with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens which offers wide-angle to standard length shooting capability specifically designed for APS-C cameras. It is equivalent to a 28.8-88mm focal length in the 35mm format and its minimum focus distance is 9.8". This lens features Canon's Optical Image Stabilization system, providing 4-stops of compensation against the blur caused by slow shutter speeds when shooting hand-held in low light or at longer focal lengths. An inner focusing system provides fast autofocus and with a Stepping Motor (STM) and six group zoom system it supports the Rebel SL1's Movie Servo AF feature for smooth and quiet continuous autofocus during video recording. Manual focus override is possible. A high precision aspherical lens reduces chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range for sharp imaging and Canon lens coatings provide accurate color balance and minimal ghosting and flare.
I bought this camera to have a lighter option for hiking and vacation over my 60D. Quality and ease of use were on par with the 60D from my experience. I won't go into a technical comparison as those reviews are well chronicled here and helped me to make my purchase decision. I coupled the SL1 with the new Tamron 16:300 and minimized the lens swapping exercise routine that was part of most vacations and outings. Performed well on a recent trip to Yosemite and the Oregon Coast. For the cost, weight and quality of photo's I would definitely recommend this camera.
This is my first DSLR and I'm already super excited about it. I bought this a month ago and I've already taken some good pictures out of this camera. This is very compact and also has a touchscreen LCD (though I don't use the touchscreen much) for viewing the images. There are several features in the manual mode as well for amateurs like me. I'm slowly trying them out. Even though it's small, when you attach the lens it looks bigger, but still smaller than other cameras. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the LCD screen is not flip-out, which Canon did away with (maybe to reduce the size of the camera). But this is really useful when you're shooting from a raised angle.
I'm a pro photographer, but I bought the SL1 for my wife. She LOVES it. She had a Canon SX40, but wanted to take her photos to the next level. She loves the touch screen LCD and the photos are fabulous. She is still in the "Auto+" stage, but she is learning to shoot manually with it.
I used my SL-1 on three trips and liked it so much I bought a second body so I don't have to changes lenses on my next trip.
My SL-1 Takes photo's that are of very high quality. It rivals my 7D and is a lot easier to carry when I am in the field birding. Adorama has been exceptional in advertizing their products. Adorama makes it easy to purchase what you want.I highly recommend Adorama!
Pros: Great picture settings, HD video is excellent, light weight, love the touch screen, it's like an iphone in your camera. Love the Handheld night scene setting Con: Video mic volume is low and can't be adjusted
I bought the EOS Rebel SL1 (100D in the rest of the world) as a replacement body for my T1i, which I will now resell. The weight difference was the initial motivation for making the change, but the SL1 has the newer DIGIC 5 processor and a slightly more coherent user interface. I've only had the camera for a few days, so I haven't yet explored all of its features. I tried it out yesterday at a baseball game using a Tamron 18-200 zoom lens, and was very satisfied with my ability to capture the action using the continuous shooting feature. The new body and the old lens makes a great combination for most of my photo needs, and I expect that the new body will soon gather many frequent flyer miles with me.
If you Canon shooter looking at mirrorless cameras for those times you want to carry a smaller, lighter camera then consider this the SL1 for the following reasons: 1. Coupled with Canons 40 mm lens, you have a unit which is less than 4-1/2" wide, 4" high and 4" deep and weighs 20.4 ounces. 2. Handles all EF lenses 3. View finder as well as live view 4. Controls in familiar locations plus adding touchscreen controls 5. Can shoot RAW
Bought to have with me at all times because of size and capabilities. Great little tool. Never be caught without a camera again. Sometimes its hard to lug around the larger cameras and lenses, but this one being so compact makes it nice to be ready for anything.
I bought this camera, along with the Canon 40mm f/2.8 Pancake lens, for my wife's birthday. It seemed like a great little package, however we could not get a sharp image, regardless of the settings. I tried the lens on one of my Canon 5D Mark II's and it was fine, so it had to be the camera. Returned it for refund.
