Slow, Slow, Slow

The computer used 100% of the CPU to open the web browser. It also freezes if the page has streaming video. It's light if you travel with it, but that one feature isn't worth the price. Planning to return it.

All the things you need & none you don't for $400

Excellent!!! Enough speed for home use, large memory for years to come, camera, SD reader, etc. Small and light enough that last night made me walk downstairs to bring it for evening bedtime browsing, even though my medium size 14" Lenovo was right by my bed. This HP was a birthday present for my wife - I think she loves me more because of it :-) Almost an UltraBook for 1/2 the price.

Solid device but poor hardware decisions

I was looking for exactly this style of laptop. I wanted something small that was faster than an atom netbook, and this computer fit the bill. The AMD chip was great, I was able to play some games, it was light, great screen for the price... Where it totally failed was in Wifi, keyboard and mouse. From the get-go, I was unable to connect to any wireless networks. This was due to some issue somewhere with the broadcom driver. There were errors and such listed in the event log that directly mentioned broadcom files. I did restores, downloaded drivers from HP's website, and did a fresh OEM windows install but to no avail. I am a computer tech as my day job, so this is not my first time wrangling with finicky drivers. Second, the mouse and keyboard on the device would randomly just stop functioning (not a computer lock-up, just the mouse and keyboard stopped working). It was a rare occurrence, maybe 3 times in 4 days, but totally inexcusable. There are other reviews online that mentioned this same issue. In the end I returned the laptop to HP. I would have LOVED to keep the laptop but these two issues were too much to deal with.

A niche above netbooks.

This laptop is sized a bit bigger than netbooks, and is a step above their atom processors. It runs the full version of Windows and I can vouch that it will run some modern games at minimal performance. As far as durability goes, I only recently bought this version with the E-450 but my older version with the E-350 I had for over a year. I banged that one up pretty good and it survived a trip to Afghanistan and is still running well. I recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap, small, fully capable laptop. Honestly I think netbooks should all have this laptop's minimum specs.

Practical, portable and balanced

My comments are based on owning/using this PC for 30+ days. The dm1-4010 has solid and protective outer construction/materials, a reasonably-intuitive keyboard (only area which could be slightly improved for new HP users), and great battery life using Walt Mossberg's test (all systems set for optimal performance/maximum power consumption). Dual core processor is fast and powerful enough to run email and other apps (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) simultaneously without periodic hesitation. The laptop didn't come loaded with a lot of useless software and, with minimal configuration effort, was usable quickly (important because the 4010 replaced another laptop which was broken). No comments on movies/media but easy to configure/use when projecting presentations. In short, for business/general use the 4010 is a great machine and good value.

Great value

Great portability, better than average video & audio performance and great battery life, this model is close to a netbook in size, but with much better performance. It's turning out to be the best value and my favorite notebook that I've ever owned (and that's quite a few)!

Battery Life

Long hours promised but after a full charge and nothing running about 4 hours is shown on the power meter. Good news it could well be a problem with the power meter because longer work times are obtained which are closer to 7-8 hours specified. The problem between actual and displayed battery life exist even after going through the recommended power meter calibration.

Perfect Production Machine

Ok, this is about the HP Pavilion dm1-4010us. Notice that this is the US version and not the UK so it does not come witht the cover for the Ethernet port. With the E-450 APU and a CPU monitoring add-on, i have put the machine through multiple stress levels. It works as intended and bottlenecks at a grand total of 3.3 ghZ (total) with the dual core. The CPU withstands all of my intense engineering simulations through MatLab and the processor stays fairly cool at 68 degrees celcius when stationary at room tempature. Note: when running the simulations the CPU is pushing 100% on both cores. Considering the new AMD Radeon graphics onn the 1366x768 resolution, the computer DOES infact run full 1080p and 1080i with plenty of FPS as to where you will not see any glitches what so ever. Also when displayed on a 42" 1080i screen through the HDMI port, it is still 100% lag free. The DM1 comes with plenty of features that include HDMI, Webcam, 3x USB ports, WiFi, an plenty of other goodies, but i think i got my point out there about the new APU and thefact that the CPU/GPU combo does not overheat even though it is two seperate chips on a single die. Long story short, this is a Very nice package. Comparing the $430 with an E-450, to the ammount of stability this has and the wide range of x86 and 64bit compatable programs this can run, it is well worth the money.

Second try seems good so far

The first version of this laptop came with a non-functioning display. I followed some directions on the website, connecting it to an external monitor, downloaded updated drivers and BIOS, but the display still didn't work. Customer service talked me through re-seating the hard drive and memory chip, then authorized an exchange for a replacement. The replacement arrived quickly, in the second business day, and has been great so far. We bought it for the small size and portability, but it also has full versions of Windows and Office and functions like a full-size computer.

Best in class -- but not perfect.

SUMMING UP: On par with today's "ultrabooks," the DM1 is a fantastic mobile system that boasts a class-leading battery life. Upgradability is its best feature, but, unfortunately, microprocessors will still bottleneck users who multitask too heavily. This system's great advantage is that you can upgrade it, which means only a small investment is required to put the system on par with all those "Ultrabooks" you've been hearing about. With about a $200 of investment at Crucial (where I bought a 128GB solid state drive and a second 4GB stick of RAM), this system turned into quite a powerhouse. It now matches or exceeds most statistics for Ultrabooks (summing up: weaker processor, better RAM, otherwise ditto'd) and weighs about the same -- but it cost me $300 less (upgrades tallied) and has a stronger battery life. Yes, the screen is a touch smaller, but given my hyper-mobile lifestyle, I consider that an advantage. The display, audio, etc., are all very strong, and while the battery life will NOT last you 9.5 hours unless you're basically just word processing, I get about 7 hours out of it while using various web apps, word processing, etc. Netflix or other media drops this a bit, although 5+ hours can still be expected. The only weakness here is tied to the microprocessor. Even at 1.65Ghz dual-core, this little processor bottlenecks like a champ. I'm a heavy multitasker, so more one-tracked users may run into no problems -- but I hit sluggish response quite frequently. That said, if I'm willing to close a couple of my browser windows, or stop streaming music, the bottlenecking usually stops.

Good purchase

Although a bit on the expensive side if you are looking for a 11.6 inch netbook, its features and updated hardware (as compared to other brands in the market) and its sleek design make it a very desirable possession.

Great buy for the buck!!

I LOVE my notebook. Functionality is great, not TOO small (as some have complained), really cool features. If the screen is too small, do just like your touch screen phone, 2 fingers on touch pad & WIDEN it! It's GREAT. Keyboard is fine despite no lighting behind them.... really, who is typing in the dark anyway?!?! VERY HAPPY!!

awesome laptop, but.....

I bought this laptop for my wife as she is starting back to college. She needs something portable, light, and long battery life. This laptop fits the bill perfectly. It also help that keyboard is nearly full size, meaning she can surf the internet and write most of her papers with no problem. BEATS is awesome, nuff said. We've been getting around 6-7 hours battery life with regular usage. I know HP says 9 hours, but we would've been happy with 4-5 hours. The lack of 5 stars is due solely to the touchpad. It sucks, I can't say it any simpler than that. It's supposed to be compatible with multitouch gestures (especially pinch/zoom, and 2 finger scrolling). It gets confused most of the time and requires a disable/enable to get it back working properly. If you can live with a sub-par touchpad, then this laptop is perfect for most people out there. With a sub $500 price tag, it's a steal.

Got this computer quick with free 2 day shipping. Easy setup & transfer of all my files off my old laptop. Computer is very fast, lightweight, & has good battery life. Great for me to take to school or sit on the couch & browse the web. I like this netbook & would definitely recommend it.

Great Portable Laptop for School

This computer is perfect for my college student needs and more. It's small and portable, and it has a great battery-life (lasts all day for me). I have yet to run into anything that this little thing can't handle. It's fast, the keyboard is very very easy to type on, and it has many great features and shortcuts. The mouse pad scrolls and zooms with two fingers. There are keyboard keys for volume, mute, screen brightness, wireless, music playback, etc. The keys are spread out and quiet. The mouse pad is smooth and seamless, with a nice texture. The screen is great. The sound is quite amazing for such a small computer (it'll knock a Mac out of the water). There are ports for anything you would need, and I definitely do not miss having a disc drive. I love how sleek the outside of the computer is; it is matte charcoal and silver, and the lid closes to be pretty skinny. There is nothing that sticks out, like batteries do on some computers. The fan is on the left side instead of in the back, so it can sit on your lap and never get hot. I have run numerous programs at once, with many tabs open at a time, and this computer has no trouble keeping up with me. Before I purchased this, I was looking for a netbook, but I was nervous about their specs and their ability to keep up with my fast-paced computing. This laptop gives me all of the portability of a netbook, but I don't have to lose out on speed. I have absolutely no complaints about this computer. It's perfect for me, and I have already recommended it to friends. :)

Notebook power in a netbook package

This is my second DM1, both are great. This machine is awsome for school, very light yet powerfull. the battery life is outstanding. I use it for four hours straight and still have over 55% battery life remainining. The Beats audio is just icing on the cake, complimenting the other features. I thoought I would miss the dvd drive so I bought an external just in case and have used it only during initial set up to load some aftermarket software I already had, other than that it sits in a drawer. Today, almost anything you want is downloadable from the web virtually eliminating the need for a dvd drive. The DM1 loads surprisinglly fast for such a small processer configuration and has the power to run my voice recognition software. The screen is amazingly crisp and bright giving you good viewing experiance even watching HD movies.

This "computer" is too small for somebody with big fingers and failing eyes. It's too sensitive. Give me my old keyboard any day.

Hmm...

I read all the reviews and was so excited to get this product. As soon as I got it, I turned it on and set up. Then I opened a web browser and saw that there were lines on the screen. It showed up then disappeared. I turned off and turned it back on hoping that it was just for temporary thing. Unfortunately, there were still lines on the screen when using internet. I called HP for return. They said that they will send me a new one but I said no. Gave me a bad feeling for the product...

So happy with this

Ordered this thinking I was gonna get the older model DM1z, much to my surprize when this one showed up, I got the E450 processor with 4 gigs RAM and this thing flies. Had a couple Asus netbooks in the past and they don't come close to this notebook. The screen size is just right and the weight is perfect, not to mention upgrading is a breeze, all you have to do is remove the battery then slide the battery release to the left while pulling back on the cover and the whole cover will come off,(thanks HP). I am gonna upgrade mine to the max 8GB Ram. HP shipping was awesome, estimated ship date was 17 Jan it shipped from China on 10 Jan and was delivered on Jan 13, that was free shipping, when i placed the order HP was giving a $100 instant rebate, plus I found a $25 web coupon, and had free upgrade to 4gb Ram, This is a great little notebook if you are looking for one which id lightweight and extremely portable.

Very nice BUT ....

Moved up from a smaller netbook which developed motherboard problems. Just the right size increase for better viewing without the size and weight of luggage size laptops. Much better hookups re: USBs & HDMI. Fast and easy set-up of connections to existing wireless and servers. Long battery life. Runs cooler than the old netbook. Very quiet. Gripes: As I found with high end stereo gear back in the '80s, the move to black on black over black styling can only be described as stupid. Who wants to endure flood lights in order to operate a keyboard or audio components in a relaxed environment? The two tiny on/off switches require tiny fingers to operate effectively - how hard would bigger switches be? The finish on the case is a fingerprint and smudge magnet. The slick finish also allows the unit to easily slide off towards potential disaster. Santa brought a small shirt pocket Grundig radio with a wonderful matt rubber-like finish. How could HP not use this approach? These complaints aside, I am otherwise quite happy with this product and will simply adjust to the reality. I purchased a small USB lamp for the the keyboard and while it looks a bit awkward it works great at providing just enough light without being obtrusive. The price through HP online for this computer was a good value also - go get one!

Excellent Notebook

I have another large HP laptop that is very good and I use all the time, but my wife wanted a small notebook that would be easy to carry around the house to look at the internet, play games, check email, etc and not have to touch the lap top with all the equipment attached. This is exactly the machine we wanted, excellent performance, light and fast to get on line. Highly recommend this notebook.

Great mini laptop

Could not be happier. While cost is always a factor, paying somewhat more for a whole lot more (vs. the 10.1 netbooks) was absolutely worth it. This is essentially a fully blown laptop, without the internal DVD/CD drive. HP continues its "does not disappoint" status.

Great budget mini notebook

Pros: Lightweight, nice looking, good processor for graphics work and light gaming. Cons: fragile, slick and shiny case that's hard to hold I've had the dm1-4010us for more than a month now, and I'm pretty happy with the purchase. It's a great little notebook with not quite game-capable graphics and good battery time. The display bezel feels like laminated paper and easily slips out of place, and the case does not the sexy texture that the description shows. I had to buy some rubberized tape to put on the lid just so I wouldn't constantly worry about dropping it. And of course the glossy finish is the traditional HP "fingerprint magnet" variety. Overall, It's a great travel notebook that you'll have to treat gently if you want to keep it looking pretty.
