takes some practice to use efficiently for clear images
I carry it with me on every tyrip. Period. Love the macro.
I use the camera on outdoor adventures - backpacking, hiking, kayaking, snow camping, etc. The shutter speed is adequate for most uses, but don't rely on it to catch a fast-moving animal unless you've pre-set it for rapid-succession photos (action/pet). Even at that, it can be pretty slow sometimes. However, this camera cannot be beat for durability (I have accidentally dropped it several times), and the waterproof aspect works great so far. The photo quality is above average, but not professional quality. I wish it came with a wrist strap, in addition to the neck strap.
Okay, so I've been shooting with Nikon professional end equipment for about 17 years. I've had mostly good experiences with their cameras and I love their pro lenses. When this point and shoot was so highly reviewed by editors and magazines I decided to try it. It stands as the single worst camera I have ever used, bar none. The menus are terrible. The huge array of preset scene selections failed me at every turn. I chose "indoor party" for, of all things, an indoor party. Do you know what? The flash never fired. The camera opted for a half-second shutter speed in incandescent light rather than having the flash fire. I lost picture after picture. So I chose Auto, which actually means manual, as far as that goes. I chose auto flash and it still didn't fire. More blurry photos. I'm here to tell you, the VR is just not that good, and it doesn't help for moving subjects anyway. The list goes on. Most of the preset modes do not allow the user to control the flash at all. They turn it off or on and that's that. Typically, despite the shooting mode, the camera defaults to a ridiculously slow shutter speed and leaves the flash off. The f3.9 lens is just too slow for that. This camera desperately needs a "minimum shutter speed" setting. I quickly developed a real hatred for this camera and I returned it after just a few days and several hundred wasted shots. I don't understand why reviewers like it so much. Thankfully, Adorama's customer service came through for me.
I've had this camara for about 3 weeks and have used it in several shooting environments. Perhaps it's the negative part of being an early adopter but this camera is not up to Nikon's standards. The body is nice and solid with a secure waterproof battery/SD card door. The screen is good for an UW camera. The problem is the auto focus and firmware. It has a hard time focusing even though the face detection area has picked out the subject. The shutter lag is horrendous as the camera tends to think forever. The flash tends to burnout about every third photo. Lastly, the detailed instruction manual is on CD not a written one like other Nikon 1/2 inch thick books. Hopefully there will be a firmware update soon. I've had several pocket underwater cameras from other manufacturers and this one is the best but far from a great Nikon.
