Former professional sports photographer, now techy enthusiast. Got this for a trip to Ireland on which we intended to do a lot of hiking in inclement weather and through unpredictable terrain. I didn't want to bring my DSLR and expensive lenses in the rain and saltwater mist. This camera was the right price, the right size to pack, and has all the tech specs to take really good images without risking a thousand-dollar kit. The refurb price of this camera makes it almost criminal to NOT buy one. Throw it in your backpack/glove box/purse for any time you need a picture but don't have (or don't want to endanger) your primary kit. Images are of comparable quality to any other P&S I've ever used; startup is lightning-fast; lag between shots is negligible; vibration-reduction is good; controls and menus are intuitive; buttons are responsive. Getting used to using the screen in lieu of a viewfinder is tough, but that's not the camera's fault. I only briefly used the video, so my opinion there is limited, but I don't have anything to complain about. The only real gripe I have is that the flash resets to Auto every time I turn the camera off and on again. There may even be a way to change this, I haven't delved into the setting yet. Tl;dr: Amazing, inexpensive, little tank of a camera. I can't think of a reason NOT to buy one. Grab an extra battery while you're at it, they're only $20.

Adorama will not send a replacement on account of their return policy for waterproof cameras (although this particular unit was clearly not waterproof as advertised), and Nikon required that I send the unit to them, paying shipping myself, and they would not take the battery back despite it probably being ruined by the defective camera. All in all, not the experience I was looking for when I purchased this camera for my wife's birthday. If Nikon does in fact send a functional replacement unit, I'll definitely re-evaluate the device itself at that time.

Fantastic Camera

By

from Maine  -  Photography Student

I have previously owned a Canon Rebel XS DSLR, as well as various film cameras. I decided to invest in a high-quality, light-weight point-and-shoot to take with me on hiking trips and various outdoor adventures. Naturally, I wanted a device that could keep performing through all of the various weather situations it gets put through, and be averse to drops and impacts. I've owned this camera for about a month now and have taken it hiking multiples times, as well as taken it to less-extreme places, such as the local botanical gardens. I couldn't be happier! This little baby takes brilliant video, and one of my favorite activities has becoming shooting underwater video. The pictures, although not quite as crisp and noiseless as my DSLR, are high definition and accurately reflect the light and color quality of the subjects. Another favorite feature is the macro option, which can shoot incredibly close to subjects and keep that high clarity resolution. I would definitely recommend this camera to both casual and advanced photographers for its light weight, ease of usability, fantastic options, and high quality results!

Bought as a lightweight compact alternative to my primary Nikon SLR. Will use on those times when I cannot bring the big camera bag.

Great Value

By

I used this camera on a snorkeling and scuba diving trip. I used it underwater as deep as 15 feet without a problem. It did a good job with video as well as snap shots. I just wish it had a viewfinder for underwater as the LCD screen was difficult to view in certain lighting conditions. The battery life was great.

Seems as Good as new

I decided to buy the Mack Diamond coverage for this camera since the other warranties do not cover water damage (even though this is a waterproof camera).

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Does the Nikon one year standard warranty still apply when buying refurbished?
WEBSTER J  No. The waranty is for 90 days on referbs. This camera is tough enough that you would exceed the normal new equipment waranty anyway. No waranty on a camera is good if you drop it (a bunch and hard with this camera) or run over it with a car (been there - done that). This camera just may be OK, even with the last two disasters. Also, make sure the watertight compartment for the battery/flash card is closed if you go in the water. Hope this helps, Web
Shopper  How is the battery life on this camera? With or without using the GPS?
DAVID M  I used the camera on an outing last March for 5 days on and off and had sufficient battery life. No experience using the GPS on an extended interval as it relates to battery life.
Michael S  I am seeing quite a bit of reviews (even on Nikon's site: http://goo.gl/Rwkv3) saying the camera gets water behind the screen after just a couple times in the water. I am planning on using this primarily in our pool. Is this water-behind-the-lens-issue still an issue? Also, if there is water behind the lens after a couple uses, will Adorama still take it back...?
Jigar P  The camera was fine underwater for me. We went to water park with it and used it without worrying a bit. It took some great snaps in or out, wet or dry. I takes some awesome pics.
