It has raw capability and an adequate zoom range of 28-200mm equiv. The lcd is great and the tilt function really helps with difficult angles. The optical viewfinder is, while only 80% is terrific as a low light assist. The diopter adjustment really works well. While large the camera feels well balanced and reminiscent of an old rangefinder camera. The macro goes to about one inch which is really wonderful. What don't I like....raw processing is still slow but I don't shoot sports. The white balance on auto often gets fooled by lighting which is a hodge podge of fluorescent and tungsten. Occasionally on playback I see a read error but that might be my card. I do use it for video and it only 720p, not really a problem. Overall I feel it meets my needs well. Also I can use a Nikon SB 400 flash which integrates with the camera.

Chance at Quality for Bargain Price

By

from Northern NJ  -  Photo Enthusiast

Very pleased to be able to get a former top of the line P&S at deep dscount. Think that was a great deal getting the Nikon refurb unit with all the standard trimmings in the box. Doesn't matter that there is a newer model with more MP and faster lens. This old baby has faster read times and still has the optical VF! Feels good in the hand. Love this size palm camera. Not a skinny little thing and not a brick. Shoot NEFs. Can do great things with the images.

Best ergonometrics in a compact

By

from California

The P7100 was purchased after several epiphanies: when travelling I never have room for my DLSR any more, or even a mirror-less system for that matter; 99% of my images are never printed on paper; and as I now need reading glasses viewfinders are of lesser value. The P7100 has become my main camera replacement, taking the place of both my compact and my DSLR for almost everything. Excellent IQ but the outstanding feature is the ergonometrics; I love features like having separate controls for Aperture and Shutter and having things like Flash Compensation at hand without going to the menu. These controls are main selling feature of the camera for me. The tilt out screen is the main feature I like; I generally shoot from the waist.

Nikon P7100 issues

By

from Bay Area, California  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I hike a lot and bought this camera to take instead of my D300. I like that it is light and the zoom it nice. Picture quality was better than good. I have owned it for 3 months. I have taken approximately 900 photos. The problem is, the lens cover started to not open all the way. I had a similar problem with the P7000 which I replaced with this camera. I had to send that into Nikon twice to repair (under warranty). I contacted Nikon today to have this repaired and they gave me the run around. Obviously, there is a designed flaw. It is a little disappointing that the reliability of the camera is a concern. Imagine taking your camera on any trip or event and then have it not work, very frustrating. The bigger issue was the Service department's lack of helpfulness. I own all types of Nikon cameras and lenses. After this experience with Nikon, I may have to become a Canon owner.

It's almost there, Niikon.

Very fine camera. It needs a fully articulated monitor and a longer zoom range and you'd really have something. Can you hear me, Nikon?

Big improvement over P7000

By

from Undisclosed

Major improvement over P7000. Seems faster and I appreciate the pull-out LCD to help take photos from different angles. When shooting in manual mode it's a big help to have the front dial for quickly, easily changing Aperture.

The P7100 Delivers Photo Quality Beyond My Expections

By

from Vancouiver,WA

I bought my P7100 hoping that the operation and photo quality would be good enough so I could leave my much larger and heavier Nikon cameras and Len's at home once in a while. I like to go into the city of Portland, OR. and just shoot architecture and other subjects I happen onto without having to haul all my camera gear with me every time. I have used all the functions and it amazes me what it can do. I can't believe how well it does in close-up mode. Even the HDR function surprised me with how well it did. I have printed some 13x19 photos from the P7100 and they turned as well as shots from the D200. Ive' shot professonaly in the past and I know quality. The P7100 is quality shooter !

Very Nice Advance Camera

By

from Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico

This Camera offers the opportunity to take pictures playing with the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, Etc., so you can achieve very nice photos in this "Advance Point & Shoot Camera". The Auto Focus System is very accurate and fast, considering that this camera is under the Coolpix Series. The only concern, that I have, is the Sensor Resolution, 10MP is not enough in this days, I am sure that 14 or 16MP must be offered, at least. That is the reason that I give 3 stars to this product. I can recommend this product, but please, keep in mind the Sensor Resolution.

Questions about this item:

PATRICIA V  Is there any lag time from the time you push the button to shoot ... and the picture is taken with the P7100?
CHARLES T  Yes, there is a time lag but not any worse than what you would expect from a camera such as this. If you want to shoot sports and be sure that your auto focus is happening quickly you will want to get a DSLR. For travel and family pictures ( but not targeting fast moving kids and pets) the P7100 is fine. My son got back from a two week trek on Mount Kilimanjaro and came back with some amazing photos using the P7100.
