A gem at an incredible price

This is a great camera at a steal for the price. Nikon USA does a great job with re-certifying their products as the camera looks exactly new. The lens is excellent producing sharp images in various lighting. The 10x zoom is perfectly stabilized for most situations with nice coverage. The lcd is bright, good definition and perfectly complements this unit. The zoom could be a little quieter in movie mode but that's nit picking. The complete package

By

from Palm Bay, FL, USA

I absolutely love this camera. Bought it as a present to myself after seeing the S9100 (my daughter's) in action. She experienced a problem with the lens being stuck in the open position more than once so after some research I decided to go with what I felt was the more stable model. I owned a Nikon SLR from back in the 80's and used it to experiment with photography as a hobby. With the onset of the digital camera, I migrated to the new medium and loved the versatility it afforded. This is my third compact digital camera and is by far the best. The quality of the shots is exceptional. Great wide angle to telephoto shooting capability and offers excellent shooting in low light conditions. My only criticism is the location of the popup flash. It just gets in the way. I have to make a mental note to move my finger away before shooting. Then it only pops back into the frame when you turn the camera off. Seems like a minor nuisance when compared to the benefits of owning this compact, versatile performer. My shots look professional , operation is worry free and the operational cost minimal. Would recommend getting a backup battery.....you won't regret it.

My Nikon S8100

By

from Los Angeles, CA, USA

I have a hobby of procuring broken digital cameras for repair and then re-sell them for profit. I was sold on Samsung. When Christmas came around, I decided to get my son a digital camera. I had plenty of Samsungs but I wanted something better. I got him a Nikon S6000. I was totally surprised with the simplicity of operation and the high quality of the image. Needless to say, I wanted a Nikon. I got this S8100 and it is simply the best thing since sliced bread. I am free lance photographer and used my Nikon on a recent trip to the west coast. I submitted several images to magazines and had 70% of them accepted for publication. That says a lot about the quality of this camera. The clarity and sharpness are second to none. If you look in my camera bag, all you will find now are Nikons. I read some of the reviews and think that maybe the people did not properly use the camera.

A HORRIBLE camera!!!! I would give it NO STARS if I could.

By

from New Jersey

I purchased 2 of these cameras and within a few months BOTH cameras broke--the display showed that there was a LENS ERROR. I then sent both back to Nikon for repair under warranty. Some 2 months after they were returned, they both broke AGAIN--displaying the same LENS ERROR code. Then Nikon wanted to charge me to repair them. A HORRIBLE experience. I would stay away from this model. If you check the internet for Coolpix S8100 and type in LENS ERROR, you will see all the nightmares. Consider yourself warned.

Good when it works

By

Worked great for a few months.

By

from ca

We bought this camera to take great pics of our first born. We were super careful with it and used it rarely. This camera was awesome until it stopped working. After turning it on it would take a single pic and then the whole thing would freeze up. All functions would stop working there after. So disappointed. Now gotta see what kind of warranty this thing has so it's not a total waste of money. I'm curious if the makers of this camera ever read the bad reviews on their website's forum. If they did, they'd see they obviously have a problem with this camera.

Point and Pray.

By

from Undisclosed

The camera takes beautiful photos when operating as designed. Flash is a little hot, washing out details. The unit often has issues with the SD cards, sometimes rendering photos inaccesible by fouling the file allocation info making it unreadable by PC's or the camera. Nikon's solution is to format the card in the camera only, but every few months the camera will freeze up until it decides 5 minutes or so later to access the card or a new card is swapped in. These issues are troubling since they turned up within the first year. Was hopeing for a firmware update but unit has been on market over a year and still is on firmware version 1.1.

Great camera when it actually worked

By

from Connecticut

I got this as a gift and I loved the camera when it was working, then I seem to run into problem after problem. My main concern was the battery power and charging aspect of it. After charing the camera as directed with in a few months i could maybe get 2 mins of video and 40 pictures ... really was a bummer at concerts, since I was getting great quality just no time to actually enjoy the camera. Some times the lens get frozen open, usually when the battery dies. It doesnt always charge either, and when i read the warranty nothing was offered in regards to the battery. Pretty disappointed I have also gotten errors when going from turning it off and on. I dont know if i would buy this camera if I didnt get it as a gift, sadly to say I really wish it worked better

Lens Error problem is ruining this camera's rep

By

from Seattle, WA

This camera takes gorgeous pictures. For the brief time that I was able to use it, I was very happy with it. Low light shots are great, video is good, and the automation level is just right for a not-too-serious-but still-appreciates-a-quality-photo photographer. Mine quit after 3 mos. of use with a "lens error" that renders the camera inoperable. I had read many other reviews complaining about the problem before purchasing, and always handled the camera very carefully. I'm very disappointed to be stuck with a practically new, useless piece of equipment. Nikon should offer a low cost fix for the many, many users experiencing this problem.

I Love my CoolPix S8100

By

from Undisclosed

Being a former professional Photographer and using larger cameras with interchangeable lenses, I never thought that I would ever consider a shirtpocket size camera. But with adorable grandchildren always around, I thought that I needed something I could keep close at hand. After evaluating what was available for the investment, I chose the CoolPix S8100 for it's 10X Zoom, size convenience and Video option. I later discovered the Night shots and Backlight features as an added bonus. I am extremely happy with the CoolPix S8100. People always asked me what was the best camera to buy and my "Professional" answer was always "one that you will take the time to study the handbook and learn how to use it's features. That's still true but the S8100 does a great job with just the press of the shutter release, even if it's set on auto. The 10X Zoom allows a close up without physically geting close to the subject. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
MARVIN M  I am a serious hobbyist and shoot mostly with my Nikon SLR however there are many times we are casually out and I only carry this camera and I find it works as good as my SLR more than 80% of the time. I carry Flashpoint PX202 4 Section 21" Extender Monopod with me as well and we get a lot of great shots of the two of us. The camera is so easy to use that my 3 year old grandson has already taken a number of really good shots without my assistance.
Shopper  what can a chargue have this camera?
KUNYAN H  I can't understand your question. I can tell you my situation: My friend recommend this model to me and it is as he said.
Shopper  I hear a lot of these cameras were returned because they make a noise when you zoom in and you can hear it in video. Has anyone got a camera that they bought here with this problem?
RICHARD S  Dear shopper, I buy refurbished when ever offered and never been disappointed and that goes for the S8100. I use it almost but not quite everyday and there isn't a problem with it. Hope this assure you, I would definetly deal with Adorama and trust them, Richard
