My first DSLR and I'm impressed

By

from Oregon

This is my first DSLR and having never really used a real camera before I'm afraid I won't be able to leave a thorough review. As a beginner photographer though, these are my initial impressions: The good: - Camera seems well-built and lighter than I thought. Funky texture on the body though (probably for grip). - Great battery life. If you plan on just taking a few hundred photos, it will last all day. - Designed for beginners! This camera has a mode for every skill level. A fully automatic for point-and-shoot, a guide mode for teaching you what does what, preset modes for various shooting scenarios (with optional manual control of relevant settings), and fully manual mode for the pros. The bad: - Usually more expensive than other entry-level DSLRs but Nikon still skimps on hardware features (no integrated WiFi or GPS) - LiveView (having the screen show what you are about to take a picture of) slows everything down compared to using the view finder. Autofocus and time between shots in particular are frustratingly slow. - Camera records video in H.264 format, which is good, but puts it in the ancient .MOV container? You may have to convert your recorded video before you can edit, play or upload it. All in all I really like this camera and I get excited every time I have a legitimate opportunity to use it.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  how many photos will a 16 GB sd card hold?
BRUCE F  The number of photos is wholly dependent upon on the type of image you are recording. JPEG's take far less space than RAW, or RAW with JPEG. The higher the quality of the stored image, the more memory is utilized. Thus less photos on the card.
Shopper  You are saying "it doesn't come with a memory card". But "what's included" lists a "Sandisk 16 GB Class 10 SDHC Card". Could you please clarify this issue? Thanks.
Andrew R  I'm not sure I understand your question. Normally a memory card is not included in the kit from the manufacturer. In this case we've created a bundle which includes the camera kit plus a variety of accessories.
Alyssa C  Is this camera compatible with the Tamron 18-270 AF lens?
Andrew R  Compatible lenses for this camera require the Nikon AF-S (or compatible mount). AF-S lenses have a built-in focusing motor. Tamron makes lenses in a variety of different mounts (Canon, Pentax, Sony, etc.). To verify compatibility one would need to to have the correct model/mfr number.
