This is my first DSLR and having never really used a real camera before I'm afraid I won't be able to leave a thorough review. As a beginner photographer though, these are my initial impressions: The good: - Camera seems well-built and lighter than I thought. Funky texture on the body though (probably for grip). - Great battery life. If you plan on just taking a few hundred photos, it will last all day. - Designed for beginners! This camera has a mode for every skill level. A fully automatic for point-and-shoot, a guide mode for teaching you what does what, preset modes for various shooting scenarios (with optional manual control of relevant settings), and fully manual mode for the pros. The bad: - Usually more expensive than other entry-level DSLRs but Nikon still skimps on hardware features (no integrated WiFi or GPS) - LiveView (having the screen show what you are about to take a picture of) slows everything down compared to using the view finder. Autofocus and time between shots in particular are frustratingly slow. - Camera records video in H.264 format, which is good, but puts it in the ancient .MOV container? You may have to convert your recorded video before you can edit, play or upload it. All in all I really like this camera and I get excited every time I have a legitimate opportunity to use it.
