This body is an upgrade to my D5000, and is used for landscape photography. The main selling feature for me was it was 14 bit vs 12 bit. This has eliminated the need for a graduated neutral density filter or doing HDR, as it has nearly a 2 f/stop increase in dynamic range. The auto white balance seems to do a much better job than that on the D5000 The controls are straight forward and easy to use. Image quality is very good, this excellent color. Was torn between this and the D7100, glad I saved the money. Only down, after 100 shots, battery was getting low. This may have been a more function of the weather, as it was only 15 degrees out.
This is better than I expected. I upgraded from a D40 and read reviews on the D5200 beforehand. Image quality is fantastic. Focus speed/Low noise images are incredible and the algorithms for AUTO ISO with minimum shutter speed and highest ISO choices are great. The choice and ability of user to customization sharpness, saturation etc are great. Controls are easy to use. I was thinking of delaying the purchase because of the lack of a touch LCD but the clicks of control buttons are actually simpler and quicker. The screen/icons are so small that touch is a drawback. Video images at low noise are great. The only thing is an auto focus lens 18-200mm motor is easily picked up in video mode. 50mm 1.8 lens motor is very faint and very usable. In any event I got an external mic which helps, and there's always Manual focus mode which is actually very usable with a little practice and which I intend to use. All manufacturer's SLR technology video modes experience the same noise issue. That will change over time with new technology. If you want mainly video, get a video cam but the resolution wouldn't be as good as an SLR. The swivel LCD is great especially shooting in crowds and ground closeups and if you are a senior with aging eyesight. The small form factor is great for travel. Easy of use is definitely a plus with logical button layout. It was a good decision.
Mostly nature photography, I had a Pentax K 7 this has been a great upgrade. I got the 18mm-300mm lens it is a bit heavy but I did not want to be changing lens all the time. I have not used the video feature, but I am very happy with the improved detail in this camera.
I made the mistake of buying another Nikon camera hoping that after 10 years Nikon would have gotten their professional tech support act together. What I have been told from tech support is that you cannot connect anything to a Nikon camera that isn't made by Nikon. All I wanted to do was use a professional shotgun or wireless mic system with the camera. I asked: was the mic connector on the camera an industry standard stereo TRS? They wouldn't or couldn't answer my question. The camera is better than their tech support. This is not the first time tech support from Nikon has failed to assist me, that's why the camera got 1 star. Would I buy this camera again? I won't buy another Nikon product again. The equipment is only as good as the tech support behind it. Luckily, this camera is only a stand-in for a 4K video camera I will be getting later in the year. I bought cheap, I got cheap.
Terrific upgrade from a Nikon D40. Pictures are crisp and clear and the camera offers plenty of opportunity for growth.
Very nice camera. Still learning all the ins and outs. Moving from a D40 that only had 3 autofocus points, having 39 is awesome. Much quicker too. Recommended.
I like the camera and I love the processor and for the most part I agree with all the positive comments except; 1. The battery. The battery is not the same as its big brother the D7100 or even, for that matter, as good as the D90. Its about half the life. I consider this a flaw. 2. The build. Sure I don't expect the hard shell of a upper price nikon..but this build is even less than the D90. Other than that.... a great little camera
Lightweight, responsive camera
I upgraded from a Nikon D5000 and love the improvements in this camera. The image quality is much better. The video is easier to use. The camera itself has a slightly better style to it and I love the larger screen. If you are a professional amateur like me, then this is the perfect tool for making great picks.
I purchased this camera to replace a Nikon D5000. It was solely for an upgrade as the D5000 works just fine. I bought the body only and used the my lenses and external SB600 flash. While I have only had the camera for a little over a week, I like it. The information displayed on the LED screen is much better than the D5000. The picture quality is excellent. The only complaint I have so far is that it takes a relatively long time to focus when using a the built in flash. There may be a setting to improve this but I have not found it yet. The battery life is good, plus Adorama shipped it with an extra battery so I always have a fresh one ready to go. The camera is light and easy to carry around.
