Great camera, but not for me

It's a good camera for the price, but more expensive in the long run as all the lenses have to have a focus motor. I decided to go with d7100 instead and open up more doors for the future.

Nikon D5200

from Gloversville, NY  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This body is an upgrade to my D5000, and is used for landscape photography. The main selling feature for me was it was 14 bit vs 12 bit. This has eliminated the need for a graduated neutral density filter or doing HDR, as it has nearly a 2 f/stop increase in dynamic range. The auto white balance seems to do a much better job than that on the D5000 The controls are straight forward and easy to use. Image quality is very good, this excellent color. Was torn between this and the D7100, glad I saved the money. Only down, after 100 shots, battery was getting low. This may have been a more function of the weather, as it was only 15 degrees out.

Fantastic - Better than I expected

from Bay Area, CA  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is better than I expected. I upgraded from a D40 and read reviews on the D5200 beforehand. Image quality is fantastic. Focus speed/Low noise images are incredible and the algorithms for AUTO ISO with minimum shutter speed and highest ISO choices are great. The choice and ability of user to customization sharpness, saturation etc are great. Controls are easy to use. I was thinking of delaying the purchase because of the lack of a touch LCD but the clicks of control buttons are actually simpler and quicker. The screen/icons are so small that touch is a drawback. Video images at low noise are great. The only thing is an auto focus lens 18-200mm motor is easily picked up in video mode. 50mm 1.8 lens motor is very faint and very usable. In any event I got an external mic which helps, and there's always Manual focus mode which is actually very usable with a little practice and which I intend to use. All manufacturer's SLR technology video modes experience the same noise issue. That will change over time with new technology. If you want mainly video, get a video cam but the resolution wouldn't be as good as an SLR. The swivel LCD is great especially shooting in crowds and ground closeups and if you are a senior with aging eyesight. The small form factor is great for travel. Easy of use is definitely a plus with logical button layout. It was a good decision.

Love the detail in this camera!

from Michigan  -  Photo Enthusiast

Mostly nature photography, I had a Pentax K 7 this has been a great upgrade. I got the 18mm-300mm lens it is a bit heavy but I did not want to be changing lens all the time. I have not used the video feature, but I am very happy with the improved detail in this camera.

Very nice camers

from Mesa, AZ  -  Photo Enthusiast

Bought to upgrade from a D40x. Easy to use camera. Only fault I find is the body is a little small. I find myself accidently changing the focus point by hitting the multi-selector pad with my thumb. Perhaps I simply have "fat fingers."

Big mistake

from St. Louis, MO  -  Pro Photographer

I made the mistake of buying another Nikon camera hoping that after 10 years Nikon would have gotten their professional tech support act together. What I have been told from tech support is that you cannot connect anything to a Nikon camera that isn't made by Nikon. All I wanted to do was use a professional shotgun or wireless mic system with the camera. I asked: was the mic connector on the camera an industry standard stereo TRS? They wouldn't or couldn't answer my question. The camera is better than their tech support. This is not the first time tech support from Nikon has failed to assist me, that's why the camera got 1 star. Would I buy this camera again? I won't buy another Nikon product again. The equipment is only as good as the tech support behind it. Luckily, this camera is only a stand-in for a 4K video camera I will be getting later in the year. I bought cheap, I got cheap.

Great Camera!

from Philadelphia, PA  -  Casual Photographer

Terrific upgrade from a Nikon D40. Pictures are crisp and clear and the camera offers plenty of opportunity for growth.

from Seattle, WA  -  Photo Enthusiast

Very nice camera. Still learning all the ins and outs. Moving from a D40 that only had 3 autofocus points, having 39 is awesome. Much quicker too. Recommended.

Good addition to Pro Gear

from Portland, OR  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this camera in addition to my D800 and D3s. Sometimes the alternative to not bringing expensive camera gear is to not bring a camera at all or to bring a point and shoot camera, with which I find results often disappointing. The D5200 is the perfect camera for me in this kind of situation. It is light compared to the Pro cameras and user friendly. I am very pleased with the results. My teenage kids can use the camera without me having to worry about my pro gear.We also enjoy taking videos with this camera. The only downside is that taking videos will drain the battery quickly, but the kit came with a spare. I also like the photo bag that came with it.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Can I get this in Red or Bronze with the 18-105 lens?
Andrew R  Unfortunately no, we currently only offer the kit with the 18-105mm lens in black. The red and the bronze kits are equipped with the 18-55mm lens.
Shopper  Hello, When will this camera (with 18-105mm) be in store to pick up? Thx.
Andrew R  I recommend calling our sales department to confirm availability: 800-223-2500 / 212-741-0052
Shopper  is Nikon d5200 performance wise somehow the same as canon T5i?
GENINE G  Sorry, but I've had no experience with the Canon you mention. I am a "Nikon" girl from day one. The 5200 is a great little camera for the price.
