Learn about the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko Digital 17MM F/1.8 MICRO 4/3 - SILVER LENS

Sometimes you want to capture a far-off subject so you zoom in with a narrow-angle lens. For just about everything else, though, a quality wide angle lens is full of possibilities, whether you’re talking about landscapes, street snapshots, cityscapes or even simply capturing nearby subjects in low-light situations. Meet the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko Digital 17MM f/1.8 MICRO 4/3 - SILVER LENS, a wide-angle, single-focal-length lens well suited for all of the above, and compatible with the Micro Four Thirds System. This stunning piece of equipment isn’t only built for wide angles, but to capture just about any picture that’s as large as your imagination.

Of course, we at Adorama would be remiss if we didn’t explain how this Olympus-17mm wide-angle lens accomplished its magic:

  • Nine carefully placed lens elements in six groups provide an advanced system of optics and lenses that ultimately work to deliver an aberration-minimized, sharp, quality picture. No detail is spared here, including even lens coatings that are built to reduce flare and ghost images. Go ahead—shoot against the light and see just how well a wide-angle lens like the Olympus 17mm can perform in less-than-ideal situations.
  • Whether you want to capture still images or HD videos, the autofocus mechanism present in the Olympus 17mm wide angle lens is built to handle just about anything. True, a wide-angle lens is less susceptible to blurring and other similar aberrations simply because you won’t be zooming in tight on a subject—but any lens is vulnerable to blurring. If you’re going to take high-quality digital video, you’re going to have to make sure that the autofocus can keep up. Thankfully, that’s the case here.
  • It’s not only the inside that counts, at least not when it comes to lenses! That’s why there is an optional lens hood and lens cap here, designed exclusively for this option. Many people enjoy the metallic, classic finish of the exterior, which looks every bit as sophisticated as the inner workings of the Olympus digital 17mm lens actually are.
  • Don’t forget Snapshot Focus. This mechanism allows you to take spontaneous images by shifting the focusing point to a distance of your choosing. Slide your focus ring to make the choice, altering distance and depth of field, which lets you manipulate the wide angle for a variety of astounding visual effects. Amateurs and even professionals who have never had the chance to play with a wide-angle lens will particularly enjoy these features.
  • Compact in size but large in function, there are just 1.4 inches in length to this Olympus 17mm M. Zuiko wide angle lens, which means it won’t take up excessive space in your photography bag, your briefcase, your pocket, or—well, it just won’t take up much space, period. Want the freedom to travel with a lens without feeling like you’re carrying your lens everywhere? This is the one for you.

At Adorama, we appreciate a good wide-angle lens both for its innate quality and for the wide spectrum of shots you can create when putting it to good use. But to call the OLYMPUS 17mm f/1.8 MICRO 4/3-SILVER LENS, part of the series of M. Zuiko lenses, a “good” lens does it a disservice: it belongs on your list of “great” lenses.

From the Manufacturer
• The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f1.8 lens (34mm in 35mm equivalent), is a bright, wide-angle, single-focal-length lens ideal for snapshot street shooting, landscape photography or capturing subjects in challenging low-light environments. • Each lens element is polished to an ultra-high level of working precision only possible with the progressive techniques developed by Olympus master craftsmen, and carefully assembled to ensure maximum accuracy and reliability. Olympus' exclusive ZERO (ZUIKO Extra-low Reflection Optical Coating) lens coatings are applied to the elements to reduce lens flare and ghost images even when shooting against the light.

• The Snapshot Focus mechanism lets users easily take spontaneous, blur-free images by shifting the focusing point to a specific distance. A Controversial Prime Lens

All concerns about this lens go directly to the comparison between Panasonic 20mm f1.7. All concerns about this lens go directly to the comparison between Panasonic 20mm f1.7. I have been using 20mm pancake lens for a long time, it's tack sharp even at wide open, but its AF performance on Olympus bodies is unbearable. Olympus doesn't apply in-body correction for purple fringing or CA, which is heavily needed by Panasonic lenses. These are two major factors that encourages me to get a 17mm f1.8. First of all, I would like to say the build quality is excellent. You can hardly find any lenses within this price range to offer such good build quality. With the most up-to-date MSC motor (since 12-50mm/3.5-6.3 lens, Olympus claims that it enhanced its MSC motor to support 240fps scan rate for AF), the AF speed is blazing fast, on par if not better than all mirrorless interchangeable lenses available in the market. The snap shot ring is a very unique, maybe exclusive feature from Olympus, it can be triggered as AF/MF switch and at the same time you will be able to see the focus range and DOF. The image quality is good. CA is extremely well controlled, I can barely see any CA even under high contrast situations. But, the resolution of the lens is somewhat off the standard. It's on par with my Panasonic 7-14mm lens. Yes, I'm not typing it wrong, it can only achieve the same resolution as a zoom lens can do! Although the corners are pretty solid, but the overall sharpness and details are lower than what you can get from 20mm f1.7 lens. Plus, there's one more cons:Vignetting at wide open is pretty severe. I'm personally okay with vignetting simply because I would add vignetting to most pictures later at Lightroom. But in terms of optical performance, this is unacceptable. To wrap up, this lens provides you everything you cannot get from a 20mm f1.7: excellent build quality, fast AF, good MF mechanism, good CA controls. But at the same time, it loses all positive sides from 20mm lens: tack sharp image, lower vignetting, more compact size, cheaper price.

lens defective

Probably a great lens but after the first time I used it, it wouldn't auto focus. I don't think this is a reflection on the lens generally, just bad luck.

Great upgrade over kit lens!

By

from Huntsville, AL  -  Photo Enthusiast

I had been looking for a fast prime lens for my E-M10 since the kit lens wasn't that great in low-light situations. After considering this lens, a few others from Olympus, and a couple from Panasonic/Leica I came to the conclusion that the 17mm was the lens for me. There's lots of chatter online about how some of the Panasonic/Leica lenses are sharper wide open than this lens is, but I was willing to give up a little bit of sharpness for faster AF. After all, it won't matter how sharp the image is if you can't capture it! The construction is great too. It's all metal which is a nice surprise these days! The focus ring has a nice mechanical feel to it and snaps between AF and MF very easily. It's almost as compact as the 14-42EZ lens too! What you should take away from this is that this lens is a substantial upgrade over a kit lens, and you'll definitely be happy with it. Overall I'm very happy with the lens and it's the one that stays on my camera most of the time.

Great Walk Around Lens

By

from Frostbite Falls, MN  -  Casual Photographer

I waited too long before picking up this prime lens. Excellent optics. I forgot how good a prime lens with large aperture can be and the shooting opportunities that go with it. It is a little larger than the pancake lens but the optical and aperture differences make carrying the little extra weight well worth it. It is an all metal lens and I love the DOF scale. The transaction was done on the Adorama web site and delivery was very quick.

Super sharp, quick autofocus, excellent image quality. Solid Metal construction. If you are autofocusing, just make sure to slide the focus ring to forward first.

Fast and light choice for a wide normal

By

from Langley, BC  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

Picked this over the venerable 20/1.7 because of its AF speed to capture my kid, and it hasn't disappointed. Focusing is fast and silent; no rattlesnake / aperture chatter; good for both still and video on my E-P5. Would have loved it if it were even smaller and more pancakey. It is not as sharp as the other high-quality Olympus m4/3 primes, but sharp enough. I feel it is about $100 overpriced. Nevertheless, it is my default lens to stay on the camera for casual happy-snaps. I never much liked the 50mm FF view: on a 5D, my default lens was the 35/1.4L, and now this 17/1.8 serves the same purpose for the E-P5. Olympus made a great choice here for a kit lens.

Olympus 17mm f/1.8 = good glass

By

from Tracy, CA  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I bought this lens for my Olympus OM-D. At 17mm (x2) this lens ends up being a very nice "normal" lens. With f1.8 the pictures of my family are so crisp and sharp. The lens is small, light weight and looks really good on my OM-D, a perfect fit. It focuses fast and sharp. ..just the way I like it. I'm happy so far.

Solid, Sharp, and Beautiful

By

from Emeryville, C.A.  -  Semi-Professional

This lens was a lot better than I expected. When I got the lens I was surprised how well built it was. The silver lens also makes my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera look beautiful, which is always a plus. After playing around with the lens I found out that it has a focus locking feature, you simply slide the focus ring forward and bam that focus is stuck. I also found that if you want to use the autofocus feature, the lens must be in that position. Overall, I think this is a clean, beautiful, sharp, and down right awesome lens. If you need a lens for the BMPCC then this is a great place to start.

What a great prime lens!

By

from Atlanta, GA  -  Semi-Professional

I can use this prime lens as a standard lens for my Olympus OM-D. Together with the camera body, I have a light, almost pocketable camera that takes really high quality photos. I can continue with available light shooting, both indoors and outdoors with this great lens. The variety of Olympus and other compatible lenses makes the Olympus 4/3s system the one to beat!
