About Olympus E-P2

The Olympus E-P2 is a 12.3-megapixel interchangeable lens camera and it blends the high-quality still images of a DSLR with High Definition (HD) video, stereo Linear PCM audio recording and in-camera creativity - all inside an ultra-portable, easy-to-use body.

The E-P2 also brings a new twist to the PEN lineup an accessory port which accommodates the optional VF-2 electronic view finder or optional external microphone adapter (SEMA-1). M Zuiko Lens ED is world's first retractable mechanism design, this standard 3x zoom lens is extremely compact with an overall length of just 43.5mm.

Covering wide-angle to a moderate telephoto suitable to portrait shooting, this lens is suitable for a wide range of applications, including day-to-day shooting and traveling. With a digital-dedicated design as well as multi-coating on all lens surfaces, this Micro Four Thirds lens boasts very high imaging performance.

Olympus E-P2 Features

Packing huge photo quality

Overall I really like this camera. Very nicely build and the photo quality is superb!

The best value for a compact cam

By

I use the camera with the optional VF-2 viewfinder. My style of shooting us typically that of street photos. The shutter lag is a weeeeee bit long, so occasionally I miss shots, but for what it is (super compact), what it can do (low light capability, good image quality), this is a sure winner. The micro four-thirds format also has a very short flange distance, which allows us to adapt many high quality lenses to the camera (including the legendary Leica M-lenses).

A return to primes!

By

After giving up my film SLR's for digital, I was stuck with compact P&S or beasty DSLR's. The Olympus E-P2 is compact but gives me the ability to go back to shooting with a prime lens. I bought the 17mm lens with the body and am looking forward to the Olympus 45mm coming soon. The only drawback-I had to buy the optional viewfinder to give me that "old time" photog feeling.

do judge this camera by its look

By

I bring this camera with me everyday, which is impractical with my other camera, Canon 5D. My gripe is that the Raw files aren't readable on Photoshop (CS3). Searching harder online will probably lead to a solution but the JPEG quality is excellent. For everyday use, I've been skipping editing all together saving loads of time. Otherwise, I use the very slow raw editor that comes with the camera. Though picture quality isn't exactly 5D but it's close enough. White balance is excellent. With the right settings, even the red decoration and warm lighting in Chinese restaurants don't pose any problem. Colors are accurate and details are clear and clean. All that quality comes right out of the camera without editing. I expected it to be slow after reading other reviews about this camera. Surprisingly, it was not that bad at all (with the 17mm pancake lens) after using if for over two months. Again, it isn't 5D fast (I know 5D isn't all that fast either) but good enough, certainly faster than any point-n-shoot cameras. I can catch up with little kids at my church easily with the e-p2. All in all this camera is beautiful inside out and outside in. The classic look is as beautiful as the pictures it produces, especially with the silver body. Contruction is as solid as a tank. A little expensive it is. Lens selection is limited but that hopefully will imporve with partners like Panasonic and Sigma. You could get adaptors for original 4/3 lenses but they're ridiculously expensive. For example, the Olympus Zuiko 14-35mm F2.0 costs about [$]. That's almost twice as expensive as the Canon 24-70mm F2.8L and is a rip-off as 4/3 lenses are smaller and cost less to make. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to Micro 4/3 replacing 35mm some day.

Buy EP-2 without14-42mm lens

By

The EP-2 is an outstanding travel and general purpose camera. The primary detractors are an overly complex menu system, very poor high ISO performance, and slow AF. A fast manual third party lens (e.g., Leica, Voigtlander etc. with an adapter) greatly increases the versatility of the EP-2. Autofocus lenses to consider are the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 and 45mm macro. The Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) is a must have accessory. The increased stability by holding the camera up to ones eye and the clarity of the EVF make the camera with the EVF a pleasure to use.

Micro Four-Thirds ROCKS!

By

I use this camera for hobby but also as a Search & Rescue Technician and as an Animal Rescue Technician. Weight and size are critical due to other gear I carry. I reluctantly switched from my Canon 7D system (have owned Canon since the F-1 days) and I am THRILLED. The size and weight area a joy, and the quality is superb. Not sure I like losing the electronic viewer for flash, but hey, the rest is great. Have the 75-300 zoom (150-600 equivalent) which is insane!

Micro Four Thirds System of the Future

By

Finally. Someone, namely Olympus with the E-P2, has done what no one else has been able to do. I have seen the technology evolve, and have used many Brand name cameras professionally. Always wanting a small point and shoot type of camera readily available for that 'once in a lifetime shot', but they all had that infernal lag time delay. Now Olympus has accomplished the task and produced a camera in the E-P2 Micro Four Thirds with everything. No more lag time, no prism, light weight, good design, etc. Now a photographer can pack for an extended shoot and carry everything on the plane. In todays world that means a lot. Focusing on the E-P2, my experience with it thus far has been that it is one of the best instruments for photography that I have ever used. The electronic view finder is a pleasure to use and very accurate. The camera controls are thumb friendly and easy to manipulate. Lenses are very good. In conclusion the Micro Four Thirds System is the camera system of the future! Thank you Olympus.

Outstanding Camera, you can't go wrong

A great all round camera. I have not tested as yet with my large zoom, however if the smaller is any indication landscape and scenery will be excellent.

the E-P2 as my first digital camera

By

The Olympus E-P2 is my first serious digital camera. I've been waiting years for a non-SLR camera with its capabilities and features at an affordable price. I'm very happy with my purchase! It has already served me well on a 2-week Florida vacation. It is light, sturdy, and proved quite reliable. As I gained experience using it I found it reasonably easy to control as well, though it does have many modes and sub-modes and it's sometimes not so easy to quickly change between them. The only real problem I've had is that while I really appreciate having the ability to use the little thumbwheel on the top right of the back as a control, it is very easy to spin it accidentally when handling the camera, as it turns very easily and give little tactile feedback.
