FL-300R Compact Flash:
The FL-300R is an easy-to-operate versatile external flash for your PEN. With an equivalent GN (Guide Number) of 28 at ISO 200, you can accomplish flash shooting with stable light and optimum brightness. It functions as a bounce flash and wireless remote flash with enough power for most any typical shooting situation.
Photographers can use it in tandem with the camera's built in, pop-up flash, or as an alternative to it. Additionally, it has the ability to function wirelessly through a remote control function on the E-P3, E-PL3 and E-PM1.
The flash came for free with my OM-D E-M1. It is small and of limited use. Its size is its biggest weakness: the two AAA batteres provide very little power and the flash is anemic. I use the little camera mounted flash that came with my E-M1 to trigger the FL-300R remotely and it works fine. Inside the flash does a reasonable job lighting up a small room, but it already reaches its limits when bounced off the ceiling. I'd rank it slightly higher than my in-camera flash on my DSLR. The flash tilts up and down, but does not rotate. It comes with a cloth bag, which holds the flash and its little plastic stand. There is enough space to add a few filter foils, but that's about it. In addition: my unit may be defective: it drains the battery within a few hours. I hope its a defect and not a "feature".
I was surprised to find that the flash was capable of providing as much light as it did. Admittedly, I had to add anywhere from 0.8 to 1.2 exposure stops using Lightroom 5.2 to get the pictures to a better light level. Still, that is easily done with software, and the flash did a reasonable job, using the 14-150mm Olympus lens, during an indoor evening party. Nor did it hesitate, nor was the recycle between pics particularly noticeable. I was pleased. It is, however, not meant to be a flash for professionals.
Great travel flash.
Nice light weight, compact speed light to accompany my Olympus E-PL5. The fact that it has TTL remote is a bonus. The GN 20 is adequate for most of my needs (I usually shoot flash @ ISO 400-800).
It's a nice small flash that I use off-camera in RC mode with a clip-on flash on my Olympus Pen E-PL5. I originally bought it thinking it could be used on-camera as a master/commander in RC mode to trigger a FL-36R flash off-camera. It can't. It would have been perfect if it could. But, still, it's a nice unit that fits easily into a pocket.
