About Olympus HLD-6

This Olympus HLD-6 Bundle comes with $19.95 worth of free accessories including a Olympus GS-4 and Shipping is free! .

The Olympus HLD-6 is an optional dust- and splashproof battery holder and grip created especially for use with the Olympus E-M5. The device can be separated into two parts -- one tailored to shooting in landscape orientation and one that's ideal for portraits.

The landscape unit includes a built-in shutter button as well as a dial for locking the grip onto the bottom of the E-M5.

The portrait unit includes a molded grip for stable shooting while the camera is in the vertical (portrait) orientation, a built-in shutter button, two built-in function buttons that can be programmed independently of the function buttons on the E-M5 body, a DC-IN jack for continuous powered shooting (requires the optional AC-3 Power Adapter), and a compartment for storing an optional additional BLN-1 lithium-ion battery.

When shooting with the E-M5 and two batteries, you can choose which battery to use first; once it's drained, the camera will start using the second battery for uninterrupted shooting.

For larger hands this is a must.

I would prefer the parts be sold separately, as will use the grip more than the battery holder. Although as fast as this camera goes thru batteries, the holder might be necessary.

6 month lifespan - avoid Olympus

As many reviewers have said, the OM-D E-M5 really NEEDS this grip in order to be useable. Unfortunately, it has a roughly six month lifespan. I had to send mine in, along with the camera body, for repair ~8 months ago. That was 6 months after receiving it, directly from Olympus. It took two months for them to return it. Six months later, it's exhibiting exactly the same behavior they supposedly fixed last time. So, they didn't really fix it, but they expect me to pay to have them not fix it...

received a USED one

I am sure I would have been happy with this grip if you had sent a NEW one (which is what I ordered) instead of a very well used and beat up one.

The Best!

By

from Vermont  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This is perhaps the most well thought out accessory I have ever seen, for anything! I'll let you read about all the features somewhere else, but suffice to say that there is nothing gimmicky about this grip. The fit on the E-M5 could not be any better, and the build quality surpasses that of the camera itself. It changes the character of the camera dramatically if you use both parts, making the E-M5 much better for large lenses and portrait / event photography. If you program the camera to drain the grip battery first the lack of access to the camera battery is a non-issue. You would need to shoot over 1000 photo's in RAW to drain both batteries. I bought mine used with no problems. This is very well made, so buying used will not be a problem. Get one!

Well made, versatile, some inconvenience

By

from Carlsbad, CA  -  Semi-Professional

Overall, I like the two-part option of having the grip and battery/vertical hold separate, making this accessory quite versatile. The grip alone makes the camera much easier to hold and use over long periods of time - although the shutter release would have been better if it were at more of an angle. It also makes it inconvenient to replace the battery, because it must be removed to do so. The additional battery holder does the obvious, making vertical shots much more comfortable and adding battery life. Since the single battery life of the OM-D is relatively short, this is very valuable. While the grip and battery holder adds bulk, this is its purpose, making the very small OM-D much more comfortable to hold. This of course can be seen as a detriment, since most buy a camera of this type for it's small size. It seems well built, but with mostly plastic construction.

Great accessory

By

I hesitated buying this, because the reason I went into m43 is small size/low weight. Glad I got it, though. I like the modular design. The grip makes the camera much easier to hold without adding much weight. The strap is no longer in the way of the shutter button. The extra battery is great to have too when I travel. The EM-5's battery life is not great and with the battery grip, I can use the camera all day.

Makes handling fun again

By

from Chicago area, Illinois  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

It gives the camera such improved handling and convenience that I haven't removed it since the the day I first mounted it...it will likely never be taken off! It's bulk and weight actually helps me steady my handheld shoots to reduce shake. Reminds me of the good old film SLRs fitted with the motor drive. It converts a mirror-less compact (Olympus' OM-D EM-5) into a convenient sized SLR. I LOVE IT!

Essential Equipment

By

from Newport Beach, California  -  Semi-Professional

When purchasing my OMD I didn't hesitate buying this battery grip. Both pieces live on my OMD everyday and I find it adds to the operation and function of the camera without making it heavy. I personally don't find it to be bulky or unyielding and it certainly adds a secure purchase to the camera. Additionally, I find it essential for the additional battery capacity. The single battery configuration just doesn't do it for me because of the short life span of the batteries. The build quality is rock-solid and identical to the build quality of the camera. The layout of the buttons and dials is well thought out and implemented. The are also fully customizable just as they are for the camera. Everything about this accessory is quality and well engineered. They even remember to include an tripod attachment. It's not perfect by all means. To recharge the battery in the camera, you'll have to remove the entire grip. Thankfully, Olympus did a great job designing the grip so it goes on and off quickly and easily. Buy this and another battery and don't look back! You'll enjoy the added capacity and customizability.

Questions about this item:

NICHOLAS FIENNE C  I have the Olympus AC-3 AC Adapter for this grip. Does anyone know how you can tell when the unit is charging and when it is fully charged?
JOSH J  I purchased the HLD-6 for my OMD EM-5 but had to send it back to Adorama due to a defect. For some reason the device continued to draw power, depleting my battery within hours, all while the camera was in the off position. I am still waiting to hear back from Adorama about my refund. Thank You
Shopper  Does this include a battery or must a separate standard battery be purchased?
STEPHEN M  It does not include a battery. A separate standard battery can be used, but you are not required to use two batteries. You can just use one battery (either in the camera or in the grip) and still have the other advantages of the grip.
Shopper  Does this make the camera more comfortable to hold?
JOHN L  Yes. Only use the 1/2 grip and pricey but I keep it on the camera all the time.
