What can the PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY do? As a low light compact camera, the better question might be: what can’t it do? When you’re talking about a camera body with a premier viewfinder, Wi-Fi® connectivity, plenty of luminance adjustment, focus peaking—you’re talking about a camera body with “the works.”

Product Highlights

  • It begins with the technical specs, and boy does the Panasonic GH4 camera body have it where it counts, including 4K 24p cinematic video—which, if you’re counting, is the world’s first DSLM camera recording video in that quality.
  • The focus compatibility with your favorite lenses allows for both manual focus and autofocus modes, giving you more control over your shorts—or, if you prefer it, less control for more convenience.
  • Easy adjustments including highlight and shadow control make it possible to put your photographs through your own manual filter before you process them to your favorite social media sites.

The Panasonic GH4 camera body is a camera body for someone who wants it all—and believes that they can have it in one single product and one single purchase at Adorama.

Between the words you see thrown about when describing cameras—durability, compatibility, versatility—is another, more underrated word: reasonability. The PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY is the quintessential reasonable camera body. What do we here at Adorama mean by reasonable? We mean that it knows what photographers like you want, and it responds in kind by providing exactly that, offering all of the technical specifications that make a camera body attractive in the first place. It’s reasonable by giving you exactly what you need to take high-quality pictures: no muss, no fuss. And in many areas, it goes above and beyond reasonability into pure, raw photographic ability.

So how do we define reasonability at Adorama? Let’s explore the many features of the Panasonic GH4 camera body:

  • Technical specs: We’re talking a newly developed 16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus, which helps record images at high speeds and high sensitivity. If you thought a “reasonable” camera couldn’t take stunning photographs, then you were wrong. And that’s not to say that video is exempt from this technical superiority, either. Try 4K 24p cinematic video—the world’s first digital single lens mirrorless (DSLM) camera recording video in 4K. That’s above and beyond the call of duty.
  • Beautiful viewfinding. Viewfinding should be both attractive and accurate—if it’s neither of them, then you’re never going to frame the shots that you want. The Panasonic GH4 camera body accomplishes beautiful and accurate viewfinding through a high-speed dual OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display. This LVF (Live View Finder) and rear monitor helps ensure that you get a full-resolution display of exactly what you need to know about your next shot. Without this feature, you’re just guessing.
  • Wireless connectivity. If you’re a photography enthusiast, then there’s a good chance you don’t mind sharing your work once in a while. Enter the wireless capabilities of the Panasonic GH4 camera body, including the DMC-GH4 integrating with Wi-Fi® connectivity. If you want to instantly share a brilliant image you just took, then this camera body will help you do exactly that quickly and easily.
  • Achieve the right lighting—every time. A bold promise, to be sure, but the luminance level adjustment on the Panasonic GH4 camera body is something to behold. The DMC-GH4 supports plenty of “postproduction” features that allow you to mess with lighting to a degree beyond the amateur. This camera is capable of capitalizing on plenty of dim light, allowing you to make the most of every picture. Pair it with a high-aperture lens and you’ll never have to fear nighttime lighting again.
  • Fast focusing with easily interchangeable lenses means you’ll have no problem utilizing fast autofocus on your favorite lenses. The digital signal exchange maxes out at 240fps, giving you a focus effect that is both quick and smooth as silk.

Calling the PANASONIC GH4 BLK CAMERA BODY a “reasonable” camera might strike you as a back-handed compliment: until you read the specs and find out that in Adorama-speak, “reasonable” translates to “durable, versatile, and capable.” This camera body is capable in just about every area it serves, offering you a plethora of options for your intermediate and advanced photography. The only question is: are you reasonable enough to procure one for yourself?

From the Manufacturer
The panasonic LUMIX GH4 builds on the legacy of the renowned LUMIX GH3s image quality and world class video capabilities. Now supporting 4K quality video, the Panasonic LUMIX GH4 allows photographers and cinematographers to explore above and beyond with in camera creative options and astonishing focus control that sets the new standard for mirrorless hybrid photography.

When combined with one of the many LUMIX G Lenses or movie industry PL mount cine lenses, the LUMIX GH4 provides the ultimate platform for video. Photographers will enjoy the controls and image quality expected of a professional grade main system camera for still and hybrid photography. Both will enjoy the durability and lightweight portability that a modern mirrorless DSLM digital camera offers over legacy DSLR systems.

16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor
The 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor achieves high quality, high sensitivity image recording with its quick response. An approximately 50% higher speed signal readout suppresses the effect of a rolling shutter when using electronic shutter or recording video. The Live MOS Sensor delivers an expanded gradation range by a maximum1/3 step at low ISOs. Superior noise reduction allows for exposures up to 60 minutes long.

Wi-Fi with NFC Technology
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 integrates Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. With the Panasonic Image App, remote photo and video shooting is available with a compatible smartphone or tablet, and can easily add embed geotag data in an image after shooting. Even if a smartphone / tablet is incompatible with NFC, you can still be easily connect to the camera by scanning the QR code displayed on the GH4's monitor from your mobile device..

VFR (Variable Frame Rate) Time Lapse Shot / Stop Motion Animation
The VFR (Variable Frame Rate) enables Full-HD video recording with slow/fast motion such as 96 fps / 4x. Time Lapse Shot and Stop Motion Animation produce a stop motion (stop frame) video with sequential pictures. Both are created in-camera without any postproduction process.

Selectable System Frequency
For the global business and professional user, the system frequency is flexible from 59.94Hz (23.98Hz) / 50.00Hz / 24.00Hz.

Superb Mobility & High-Speed Response
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 delivers superb mobility and high-speed response. The high-precision Contrast AF integrates DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology to achieve ultra high speed AF of approximately 0.07 sec*. The burst shooting power is boosted to 12 fps (AFS), and both 2,359K-dot LVF (Live View Finder) and 1,036K-dot rear monitor adopt OLED to minimize time lag while enhancing the resolution.

Superb Picture Quality for Lifelike Textures
The Panasonic LUMIX GH4's Venus Engine image processor is equipped with a quad-core CPU that delivers high speed signal processing. Combined with the Digital Live MOS Sensor, you'll enjoy dramatically improved sensitivity (maximumISO 25600), gradation performance, resolution, and color reproduction while achieving exceptional picture quality with a natural look and feel that LUMIX isfamous for.

Electronic Shutter & Silent Mode
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 boasts an electronic shutter. The high-speed signal readout from the Live MOS Sensor minimizes rolling shutter effect. The Silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns off sounds, while suppressing the AF assist lamp and flash with just a single setting for special shooting occasions.

High Performance Professional Shutter
The shutter unit boasts professional graded added durability delivering approximately 200,000 release times*. You'll be empowered with a maximum shutterspeed of 1/8000 second, not only for capturing spur-of-the-moment fast moving subjects, but also using a high-speed lens with an open aperture even in outdoors to achieve the desired defocus effect. Both the built-in and external flash can be synchronized with a maximum 1/250 second shutter speed.

Reliable Durability
Tough enough to withstand even heavy field use, the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 is composed of a magnesium alloy full die cast front / rear frame. It also features splash** / dustproof construction with sealing on every joint, dial, and button. The shutter unit is designed for durability and delivers approximately 200,000 release times*.

49-Area AF/ Custom Multi AF
Focus point is increased from 23 points in the LUMIX GH3 to 49 points in the LUMIX GH4 for more flexibility in your composition. Custom Multi mode extends that flexibility even more with the ability to freely select the blocks to focus out of the 49 focusing areas.

Real-Time Output with HDMI
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 is capable of real-time image output (4:2:2 / 8 bit or 4:2:2 / 10 bit) to the external monitor via an optional micro HDMI cable*. This is perfect for professional video making that requires serious monitoring. Choose to output only the recording content, or the content with the setting menus individually, depending on the display.

In-Camera RAW Data Development
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4 delivers RAW images in-camera. The color space setting (sRGB / AdobeRGB), white balance, exposure compensation, contrast, highlight / shadow, saturation, noise reduction, and sharpness or hue can be flexibly adjusted while LUMIX' s Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, and Intelligent Resolution can also be applied.

Photo Style
You can choose color or texture type for photos and videos from Standard / Vivid / Natural / Monochrome / Scenery / Portrait. Contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, saturation, and hue parameter for each mode can be adjusted and even set into the camera's memory.

WOW. Seriously.

I have been shooting on the GH series from Panasonic since the release of the GH2 almost 4 years ago and I have always been impressed by the video quality of these small, mirrorless cameras. Going from the GH2 to the GH3 was a slight step up, but out of the box, the GH3 wasn't too much better compared to my hacked GH2. Well this time around, Panasonic has outdone themselves and HUGELY improved from the GH3 to the GH4. Aside from the 4K video looking AMAZING, even the 1080p modes are dramitic...

Going from the GH2 to the GH3 was a slight step up, but out of the box, the GH3 wasn't too much better compared to my hacked GH2. Well this time around, Panasonic has outdone themselves and HUGELY improved from the GH3 to the GH4. Aside from the 4K video looking AMAZING, even the 1080p modes are dramitically improved. The 1080 60p@200Mbps is hands down the best looking 60p mode that has ever been put into a consumer-priced DSLR camera (or a professional-priced DSLR for that matter). Not to mention it also does a lower bitrate 96fps@100Mbps - also extremely useful. All of the footage is easy to edit, able to drop the 4K files straight into a Premiere timeline with no lag (can't be said for many of the other 4K footage sources out there - i.e. RED, Canon 1Dc, BMPC) yet the footage color grades almost as well as any of those cameras do. In addition to great video, Panasonic also stepped up the quality of the stills from the GH3, improving on image detail, AF functionality and an even faster external x-sync speed. GO BUY ONE!

Great Camera! Bundled Items Lacking

The Panasonic GH4 is everything I had hoped for and more. I use it for Greenscreening and it does a great job. You can even see the individual strands of hair. However, the other items in the bundle are cheaply made. For example, the card reader literally fell apart the fourth time I used it. When I pulled it out of the computer, the outside shell pulled off, the inside electronics fell off the USB connector which stayed in the computer. The tripod has a tab that sticks up and digs into the rubber cap on the bottom of the camera, and the camera bag to too small to be useful. The camera will fit in it, but it is a tight fit, and that's about all you'll get in there. If I did it over again, I believe there's a bundle that just includes the camera, battery and card...I'd buy that one.

GH4, an exceptional camera for photography.

I had the GH3 before this. As a stills only shooter I was on the fence about paying for the upgrade. After reading a few reviews I decided there were enough improvements over the GH3 for photographers, and I ordered one. When I got it I found there were even more improvements then the reviews had mentioned and just the speed alone was a good enough reason, not to mention all the other things Panasonic put into it. I feel like they held nothing back and threw everything they had into this awesome little beast. The GH3 was the best mirrorless camera on the market when it came out and the GH4 just blew it away. Couldn't be happier with the purchase and would buy it over again in a heart beat. If it sounds like I'm gushing, I am. I love this thing and have had more then one person switch after seeing what I can do with this much smaller kit. Panasonic is doing great things with their Lumix division and I look forward to more industry leading innovation in the future. Please Panny, more weather sealed lenses. I live in Micronesia and it can rain just about any time.

Production camera in a tiny package

I've used the GH1 and GH2. The Gh4 is an incredible improvement. What I like about it is the ability to capture video in several formats, including .mov. All capture is progressive. I like the 4K capability which is amazing, the variable frame speed (2 fps to 96 fps). The functionality of the touch-screen menus is substantially improved over the GH2. I have 4 fixed focus lenses and a Panasonic zoom lens which gives the kind of flexibility you would expect from a large feature film production camera. I have trouble finding things I don't like about this great piece of equipment.

Excellence in a small package!

This product does so much, so well, that it could be the camera of 2014. Heck, the camera of 2015 as well. Every time I use this camera I'm amazed how far we've come in photography and video in such a short time. Panasonic has created pretty much the ultimate package for the hybrid shooter. Whether you are shooting stills, or Video, this camera delivers. Now, we all know how great Panasonic is at shooting video, but the pleasant surprise for me was just how great stills look out of this camera. They have that "pop" that we all look for in images. I generally don't write reviews so I probably sound vague here. Sorry for that. There are plenty of reviews out there to show you how great this camera is. I'm just going to keep shooting with it and refining my craft with it and enjoying every minute!

Great Value for the Money

Coming first from the G5K camera, I find this camera a mini powerhouse. I do more video now than stills. How about 7-bracketed frames in a second? I use the 35-100mm zoom for most of my work, the stills are very good as long as you have fairly good light and under 1600ASA. I find the noise becomes an issue once you go higher, a trade-off with this smaller sensor. The noise is mainly Luminance, so it is not difficult to remove, and no loss in detail. As for video, I love the variable frame rate option, and 72fps at 200mbs looks superb. The menu options and layout take a bit getting used to, and probably could use a bit of re-work, but the articulated touch screen is a winner, as is the OLED viewfinder. I am 60 years old now, and my eyes are not sensitive to light as much, therefore, I can see the edges of the frame very well. The camera is very light compared to most full-frame sensor cameras. I must say the micro-4/3rds is now a mature format and will have a place in future photography.

Amazing Doesn't Begin To Describe

I could go on and on about how awesome this camera is, and how sick it is that's a true 'film/cine 4k DSLR/DSLM' with amazing qualities and what not, but all I'm gonna say is this. With the right lenses and the right adapters... this thing rivals even a 2k-4k RED! It's not only one of the best 4k cine video cams on the market, it takes AMAZING photos as well! If you're looking for the ultimate 4k under $2k video machine... this is it look no further and forget about all the other competitors.... with a speedbooster this thing can imitiate and SURPASS even the BEST APS-C cams and even some FULL FRAME cams! Highly suggest the PL/Bayonet mount for PL lenses such as the Cooke Panchro series, or if you don't wanna break the bank, look into the metabones speed booster as it will turn the GH4 into a powerhouse machine comparable to Super 35mm specs. Absolutely insane footage capture even straight to the card at 4:2:0 and even more incredible at 10-bit 4:2:2 output over the HDMI connection. It doesn't get any better than this and honestly again trumps every 4k cam I've worked with or seen.

Wow....just WOW!

I've owned many cameras including the 5D3 and BMCC but the GH4 is by far the winner in my opinion. The detail it captures is breathtaking, and the 4K files are not too heavy on your computer, I'm editing them just fine on my MacBook Pro on the go. I love this camera so far and I can't wait to use it more!

Really good controls. I'm coming from Canon, and the menus took a bit of getting used to, but now that I have the camera set up the way I want it's a real pleasure to use. Very solid feeling build, and plenty of customization. Focus is pretty fast, but I don't like the options for focus point/area selection. I prefer single point focus while using the viewfinder, and it's not as quick to get the focus point in the right spot as my Canon was. Part of it is the position of the cursor control so low on the body. It requires a shift of hand-position. Just a trade-off of the much smaller body than what I had before. If you use the LCD then it's a non-issue with touch selection. Manual focus and focus peaking are great - much nicer than MF on my previous DSLR, even with bright lenses and a good focus screen. Jury's still out on final image quality while I wait for Adobe raw support without hacks. But the preliminary results look very good.

Amazing, amazing, amazing

As someone who has bought and returned the Nikon d800, messed with the 5d mark iii and not bought it, and who is around cameras and camera professionals every day, I am just floored by this camera! Bought it as a small second camera for documentary footage in addition to my Sony ex1, and it is so amazingly good and fast with facial recognition auto focus that I can easily shoot moving dancers on autofocus, as long as I have good light on them. The auto focus is lightning fast. As a still camera, equally amazing. Such a user friendly camera, the menus are well set up and for the complex amount of things the camera can pull off, the interface is quite easy to use. Perfect size and so easy to hold. Kudos to Panasonic!

Big Step Up

Used for commercials and long form videos. Upgraded from GH3. The 4K is a game changer. Still deliver in 1080, but 4k enables pan and zoom on the timeline. Peaking is a big help for sharp focus. Bit more dynamic range than GH3. Great image quality in 4k and 1080.

Questions about this item:

Roger M  Are there any adapters that allow AutoFocus with Nikkor lens?
Andrew R  Unfortunately no, it's unlikely.
Brad W  I know the 4K recording requires a certain type of SD card can I get the info to ensure I get the proper card?
Roger M  Previews have had trouble when shooting 4k with the "old" cards like the SanDisk 95MBs (peak speed). New Class 3 cards must have sustain write of 30MBs to shoot 4k Video. These SDXC UHS-1 class 3 cards are backwards compatable. I have the (dheaper) Kingston 64GB card and it works fine in my GH3.
Gordon K  My typical backpack with Nikon gear is 33 pounds. Lately for travel I have been taking a four thirds system, Panasonic DMC-GH3 and Olympus E-M5. With 5 lens the weight is only 7 pounds. The one downside is focus tracking moving objects, particularly flying birds. Will the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 solve the focus tracking problem?
Andrew R  Unfortunately, this is a new camera (Estimated ship date Late April / Early May), full specs and review data are not available from the manufacturer at this time.
