About Panasonic DMC-SZ7

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-SZ7 Digital Camera (Black) offers an impressive 14.1 Megapixel MOS sensor for beautiful image quality. It boasts a powerful 10x optical zoom and a 25mm ultra-wide angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens in a compact body for easy, convenient portability. A 3.0" (7.6 cm) Intelligent LCD monitor automatically adjusts the backlight depending upon the environment's lighting. Record 1920 x 1080i HD video via a dedicated video record button, allowing you to instantly begin recording without selecting any extra settings.

The full range of the 10x optical zoom is available in video recording mode. Light Speed AF delivers a super-fast focus response time of about 0.1 sec - making it simple to capture those spur-of-the-moment, must-have photos. Take advantage of 2 new shooting modes: Miniature Effect and Panorama Shot. Miniature Effect makes the peripherals defocused while emphasizing saturation and contrast to make the image resemble a diorama.

When you record video in Miniature Effect mode, it's played back at 10x fast-forward speed, making it comical and fun to watch. Panorama Shot enables you to shoot a horizontal or vertical panoramic image by taking consecutive shots and then overlaying the pictures to give the effect of a panoramic photo. Also enjoy Creative Retouch, which includes 6 filters: Toy Effect, Soft Focus Dynamic Monochrome, Expressive, High Key and Retro, each of which lend the picture a more artistic appearance.

The Auto Retouch function adjusts contrast and brightness to lend the photo a different look. Both retouch functions work their magic with ease at a single press of a button. Enjoy iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, which employs a whole suite of technologies to automatically select the optimal camera settings for natural, gorgeous images.

Included under the iA umbrella are High Dynamic Range, Intelligent Handheld Nightshot, Motion Deblur, AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control, MEGA O.I.S. / image stabilization, Face Recognition, Intelligent Scene Selector and Intelligent Exposure. 3D Photo Mode enables you to capture 20 panning shots and then have the camera automatically choose the 2 most suitable images - one for the right eye and one for the left - to synthesize a 3D composite.

High-quality stereo sound courtesy of Dolby Digital Stereo Creator accompanies your gorgeous HD video. The stereo zoom microphone includes a zoom noise reduction system and the Wind Cut function assists in blocking noise caused by background wind. The SZ7 is compatible with SD/ SDHC/ SDXC memory cards. It offers USB power charging in addition to the traditional AC power supply.

Great pocket camera - convenience and performance

This camera slips easily into my pocket or my wife's small purse. Weighs next to nothing, is super-easy to use, has great definition, long zoom range, bright display, good low-light performance, and more available features than we are likely ever to use taking our "happy snaps." Using medium definition we take pictures that blow up to fill my 25" PC monitor with clarity. I can clip out even small areas of our pictures and print them 5 x 6 with no blur, no pixelation. You don't have to be a photo-hobbyist to enjoy this camera's features and performance. We've had it for only a couple of weeks, taken 1,000+ holiday pics of people and places, have no regrets and would highly recommend this camera for ordinary family usage.

I actually really liked this camera allot, It took very nice pictures and had lots of great features. However I returned it because of one unacceptable flaw...the lousy display screen. Although nice and big, it was to poorest screen I have ever seen. You need to look at it directly square to see the screen properly. From any slight angle, particularly up or down, the brightness and colors change radically. Trying to take a picture over a crowd of people, or out a window was very difficult because you can't see what you're aiming the camera at. It made previewing pictures almost impossible to judge exposure because slightly tilting the camera would make the picture look over or under exposed. Except for that one huge flaw, I loved the camera but I just couldn't accept it. If they offered the exact same camera with a better screen, I would gladly pay $50 more for it.

Unusable Close-ups (AF Macro Zoom)

By

from Boston, MA

Overall SZ7 is a good compact camera. However its "AF Zoom" is completely useless! 3 ft is usually the industrial standard for the minimum required focusing distance from the subject at its maximum optical magnification. On this camera "AF Zoom" the minimum focusing distance from subject requirement increases exponentially and nonlinearly with the optical magnification: 1X – 0.16' 2X – 0.98' 4X – 3.3' 7X – 4.9' 9X – 6.6' 10X – 4.9' At 9X magnification it needs a minimum distance of 6.6 ft (not a typo!) and then it drops back down to 4.9 ft at 10X. There is no workaround with this limitation. So if you need to take close-ups quite often, this camera is obviously NOT for you.

Great camera for the price

By

from Parker, CO

I looked around at every retail store and online to fine a camera for mother's day for my wife. I've had Panasonic camera's in the past. This one is great so far. The size and the amount of features for the price are amazing. The only issues I've seen are the following: -The zoom makes a little brrrrrpp noise when extending at a certain place during the zoom. I tried 2 different cameras and both had this noise, so I can assume this is normal. Hopefully it doesn't turn into an issue. -Battery life seems a little low.

KEVIN G  The camera does have an HDR mode, but it's only available in Intelligent Auto mode. It's off in the left photo and on in the right, where it corrects for the bright sun bringing our more detail in the sky as well as bringing up shadows on the buildings and in foreground tree.
