Sony 16-50mm Retractable Zoom Lens
Measuring just 1.17" (29.9mm) when fully retracted, this SEL-P1650 retractable zoom lens is super compact and easy to carry so you can quickly whip out your camera and spontaneously grab shots as they occur. It's perfect for traveling and other scenarios that require a lightweight, compact camera and lens combo. It covers a 16mm to 50mm range (35mm equivalent = 24-75mm) for flexible shooting, and is equipped with one ED (extra-low dispersion) and four aspherical elements, resulting in a high-performance lens that is surprisingly compact.
Compact and lightweight design
Despite a 3x magnification ratio covering 16 mm to 50 mm (24-75mm 35mm eq.), the SEL-P1650 is thin and lightweight thanks to a retracting mechanism that reduces the lens to just 1.17" (29.9 mm). It truly enhances the portability of E-mount cameras, giving users the means to capture spontaneous moments when on trips with a light and compact camera/lens combination.
ED glass and Aspherical lens elements
The SELP-1650 is equipped with one ED and four Aspherical elements, resulting in a high-performance lens that is surprisingly compact. The elements correct for curvature of field on the wide-angle side and spherical and chromatic aberration on the telephoto side for beautiful, accurate, high-contrast reproduction across the entire image.
POWER ZOOM for smooth zooming
The SEL-P1650 is the first lens with an electrically driven zoom me chanism. As soon as the camera is powered on, the lens extends and is instantly ready for shooting. A dual-function control ring is used for both zooming and manual focus.
Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization
The built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system provides a 4-stop (approx.) shutter speed advantage, making it significantly easier to achieve crisp, blur-free images and video.
It's a kit lens, and therefore expecting to measure it against dedicated lens offerings is unrealistic. As is, the lens performs very well in real world situations. Outdoor shots are sharp and detailed across it's entire range. The pancake design provides a nice manageable size for when you really wish to pocket carry. The powered zoom feature does have one plus not mentioned...when used with the smartphone app to remote shutter, one can remotely change the focal length. It can come in handy for certain situations. Comparing it to my SEL1855, I find no weaknesses, other than having to buy 40.5mm filters. It's a good walk-around street photo one-lens option when you just can't bring along your gear.
I saw many bad reviews for this lens, but wanted a compact zoom for my NEX cameras. Lens arrived in mint condition for a used item. After running a few quick tests of the sharpness using real photos of buildings, not test charts, I've found it to be a good performer, sharp at all focal lengths and even good wide open, seems best at f8-11, but useable at all stops
This lens came bundled with my nex3 model camera. I have only ever had point-and-shoots prior to this. Since I enjoy taking close-ups, I thought I'd immediately have to splurge on a macro lens to be happy, but this is proving to be a useful lens. Fiddling with the settings, I have managed to take great photos outside and decent ones inside. I do find that when I'm trying to caputre things at a distance, I have to switch to telephoto lens, but almost always switch back to this one. Maybe my limited experience makes me a dumb novice, but I think it's great for the price as an all-purpose lens.
personally i got this to replace the 18-55mm kit lens which came with my 5N, but i quickly switched back reasons why its good: -small size -similar image quality -still maintains OSS reasons why i did NOT like it: -the zoom ring direction is REVERSED!! the zooming direction is the complete OPPOSITE of the 18-55mm lens, i don't know why sony decided to do this -the zoom is too sensitive! whenever a accidently nudge it, it would try to zoom in/out and this was really fustrating!
Not a tiny lens, but significantly smaller than the standard 18-55, and camera fits into a jacket pocket more easily. Haven't used it much yet, so I can't comment on technical aspects of lens. The power zoom is an interesting feature. Also, I like the wider 16 mm end of zoom. Note: the filter size is a smallish 40.5 mm, so may need to add to your collection.
Given all the press surrounding this lens' release, I really thought it would be good for video recording. In practice though, whether using the internal microphone, or externally attached microphone (from Sony)I can clearly hear the zoom operation in the recorded audio. The internal zoom mechanics are very noisy, more so if you zoom quickly. Also, despite what the product description says, there is no petal lens hood that ships with this lens.
I used this with a Sony VG20. The lens preformed OK. Its focus was slow and rough from a distance. Manual fixes that but for the price its a nice lens.
I'm using the lens on a Sony NEX 7. It seems to work extremely well. I took it to San Francisco for a street fair and it was the perfect camera lens combination. If you're use to wide range zoom lenses you have to get use to the limited zoom range of this lens but that's the price you pay for the reduction in size and weight. The electronic zoom works very well. There is no over shoot or vague coupling. It feels almost like a manuel zoom control. The images are exceedingly sharp with good color rendition. The auto focus is fast and accurate and required no compensation. My only concern is the durability of the lens. It retracts and collapses with each on off cycle or sleep mode of the camera. Time will tell. If you're willing to live with the limited zoom range and want to stay in the spirit of the new small light weight professional quality cameras, this is the best available lens for the job.
I bought a NEX-6 that came with this lens. I LOVE the NEX-6, but only like this lens. I never use it unless I want a camera and have no room for a camera bag. It is convenient at best... and frustrating at worst. Distortion correction is ALWAYS ON with this lens... that alone should tell you something. I like it for photography and hate it for video. I get strange lookin pincushion distortion that ruins my panning shots when in video mode. It operates reasonably distortion-free once you zoom to 22mm or further. Having the wide end of this lens to use is nice when you can't take a step back, but anything beyond 22mm should be ok if you have any straight lines to keep straight. Like most E-Mount lenses, you are paying for compactness and convenience, if you want high-quality optics for your NEX, get the LA-EA1 for photo or the LA-EA2 for video.
I tried both lens on both the NEX-5N and my NEX-5R and it works, but the quality control will be an issue, the silver one was not as sharp nor is the OSS working properly with either camera. Compared to the black version it is a noticeable difference in that the OSS works and it is sharper than the silver one. However, compared to my SEL1855 I will have to disagree with the reviews that are currently out stating that the SELP1650 is a sharper better picture taking lens than my SEL1855 it is not, at lease my copies of the SELP1650s. You will have to be careful and hope your version that you get is better than your SEL1855. I kept the black one and sold the silver version already, until I come across another silver version that is equal or better than my black SELP1650 as my NEX 5R and 5N is silver..
