Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Features

  • Compact Design, All-Around Versatility: Superb 70-300mm zoom lens is an excellent choice for a wide range medium to long-distance telephoto applications - & its lightweight design lets you leave it on-camera or carry it easily as an accessory lens for special purposes (35mm equivalent: 105-450mm)
  • Superb Optical Performance: Sony's G-Series lenses are designed for maximum descriptive power, maintaining excellent peripheral light characteristics and minimizing contrast drop-off even at the edges of the frame
  • Short Minimum Focusing Distance: With the ability to focus as closely as 4 feet (1.2m), this telephoto lens also lets you move in for dramatic shots of people, natural subjects and close-up details
  • In-Camera Image Stabilization: A major reason for its compact, lightweight design is the benefit of Super SteadyShot in-camera image stabilization, built into every Sony a system DSLR - and enabling accessory lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms
  • SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor): Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied
  • Focus Hold Button: For creative control and image preview, a focus hold button conveniently located on the lens barrel lets you firmly lock in focus - and a focus range limiter can be set to speed auto-focus response
  • Smooth Manual Focusing: An easy-grip focus ring on the lens barrel gives you a solid "hands-on" feel in manual focusing
  • Multi-Element Design with Internal Focusing: The SAL-70300G is designed with 16 lens elements in 11 groups, with internal focusing so the balance of your camera never changes
  • ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass: Because light of different wavelength bends at different angles when it passes through a lens, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass is used to eliminate chromatic aberration by correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors
  • Circular Aperture: Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect

Great Birding Lens

This is the perfect lens for photogrpahing birds on the wing. 300mm is not so long that you have a hard time finding the moving target. The fast focus allows you take a crystal clear shot instead of losing the bird waiting for the lens to focus. While I use my 500mm lens (Sony Reflex)for slower bird photography this lens has become my standard for birds on the fly.

Awesome Lens

By

from Athens, Ohio  -  Photo Enthusiast

I use this with my Sony A850 for landscape, flowers and sometimes wildlife/birds photography. This lens rocks!!! Silent and fast Auto focus. Image quality is fantastic. I have used it with Tamron 1.6x TC, surprisingly it does AF in bright daylight, but the Image quality is bit soft. The range is short for wildlife photography, if cost is not an issue and intended use is wildlife photography, look at Sony 70-400 G. If you are looking for a lightweight telephoto lense you can't go wrong with this gem. I have used it with Raynox DCR 250 for macro and got amazing results.

Ultra sharp fast focus

By

from Flushing MI  -  Semi-Professional

This lens is expensive just over 800 dollars though at first was leary about it for the price.I have to say I never put this lens down it is a great portrait ,and Macro and wildlife lens and talk about sharp. It makes a regular 70-300 Sony lens seem like garbage and I was happy with the regular lens All I can say is if it says a G lens you have nothing to worry about this is a sharp lens at 70-300 no softness at any setting. All I can say is I would of bought sooner if I knew it was this great..

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
CHRISTOPHER J  Bought it for a friend here in Namibia
Mike F  Will this lens fit on a Sony NEX7 camera?
BYRON W  I have not tried it, but I do not see why it would not (?).
Shopper  I own an alpha A65. Is there a teleconverter, either 1.4x or 2x that can be used with this lens and the A65 that will work with auto focus?
ALLAN D  I actually returned mine, it was very slow to focus on my A77. I went on ebay and picked up a used Minolta zoom instead. I was never impressed with the Sony offerings or QC, my A77 had a lot of problems. I ended up selling it all and got myself a Canon 6D and the 70-200 f2.8 IS II. This thing focuses like a machine on a mission. In the pitch dark, it will focus in an instant. So enjoy hunting with your 70-300 Minolta designed antique.
