No other full frame, interchangeable-lens camera is this light or this portable. 24.3 MP of rich detail. A true-to-life 2.4 million dot OLED viewfinder. Wi-Fi sharing and an expandable shoe system. It's all the full-frame performance you ever wanted in a compact size that will change your perspective entirely

World's smallest lightest interchangeable lens full-frame camera
Sony's Exmor image sensor takes full advantage of the Full-frame format, but in a camera body less than half the size and weight of a full-frame DSLR.

Full Frame 24.3 MP resolution with 14-bit RAW output
A whole new world of high-quality images are realized through the 24.3 MP effective 35 mm full-frame sensor, a normal sensor range of ISO 100 25600, and a sophisticated balance of high resolving power, gradation and low noise. The BIONZ® X image processor enables up to 5 fps high-speed continuous shooting and 14-bit RAW image data recording.

Fast Hybrid AF w/ phase-detection for DSLR-like focusing speed
Enhanced Fast Hybrid auto focus combines speedy phase-detection AF with highly accurate contrast-detection AF, which has been accelerated through a new Spatial Object Detection algorithm, to achieve among the fastest autofocusing performance of any full-frame camera. First, phase-detection AF with 117 densely placed phase-detection AF points2 swiftly and efficiently moves the lens to bring the subject nearly into focus. Then contrast-detection AF with wide AF coverage fine-tunes the focusing in the blink of an eye.

Fast Intelligent AF for responsive, accurate, and greater operability with full frame sensor
The high-speed image processing engine and improved algorithms combine with optimized image sensor read-out speed to achieve ultra high-speed AF despite the use of a full-frame sensor.

New Eye AF control
Even when capturing a subject partially turned away from the camera with a shallow depth of field, the face will be sharply focused thanks to extremely accurate eye detection that can prioritize a single pupil. A green frame appearsover the prioritized eye when focus has been achieved for easy confirmation. EyeAF can be used when the function is assigned to a customizable button, allowing users to instantly activate it depending on the scene.

Fully compatible with Sony's E-mount lens system and new full-frame lenses
To take advantage of the lightweight on-the-go body, the 7 is fully compatible with Sony's E-mount lens system and expanded line of E-mount compact and lightweight full-frame lenses from Carl Zeiss and Sony's premier G-series.

Direct access interface for fast, intuitive shooting control
Quick Navi Pro displays all major shooting options on the LCD screen so you can rapidly confirm settings and make adjustments as desired without searching through dedicated menus. When fleeting shooting opport u nities arise, you'll be able to respond swiftly with just the right settings.

High contrast 2.4M dot OLED EVF for eye-level framing
View every scene in rich detail with the XGA OLED Tru-Finder, which features OLED improvements and the same 3-lens optical system used in the flagship a99. The viewfinder faithfully displays what will appear in your recording, including the effects of your camera settings, so you can accurately monitor the results. You'll enjoy rich tonal gradations and 3 times the contrast of the a99. High-end features like 100% frame coverage and a wide viewing angle are also provided.

3.0" 1.23M dot LCD tilts for high and low angle framing
The tiltable 3.0" (1,229k dots) Xtra Fine LCD Display makes it easy to photograph over crowds or low to capture pets eye to eye by swinging up approx. 84° and down approx. 45°. Easily scroll through menus and preview life thanks to WhiteMagic technology that dramatically increases visibility in bright daylight. The large display delivers brilliant-quality still images and movies while enabling easy focusing operation.

Simple connectivity to smartphones via Wi-Fi® or NFC
Connectivity with smartphones for One-touch sharing/One-touch remote has been simplified with Wi-Fi®/NFC control. In addition to Wi-Fi support for connecting to smartphones, the a7 also supports NFC (near field communication) providing "one touch connection" convenience when trans ferring images to Android smartphones and tablets. Users need only touch devices to connect; no complex set-up is required. Moreover, when using Smart Remote Control a feature that allows shutter release to be controlled by a smartphone connection to the smartphone can be established by simply touching compatible devices.

PC control w/ remote video capture control
Remote Camera Control allows you to control your a7 from your PC using a USB cable. Feature control has also been updated to include video capture control.

14-bit RAW output for rich tonal gradation
14-bit RAW image data of extremely high quality is outputted by the a7. This data fully preserves the rich detail generated by the image sensor during the 14-bit A/D conversion process. When developed with Sony's Image Data Converter RAW development software, these images deliver the superb photographic expression and rich gradation that only 14-bit data can offer.

New BIONZ X image processing engine
Sony proudly introduces the new BIONZ X image processing engine, which faithfully reproduces textures and details in real time, as seen by the naked eye, via extra high-speed processing capabilities. Together with front-end LSI (large scale integration) that accelerates processing in the earliest stages, it enables more natural details, more realistic images, richer tonal gradations and lower noise whether you shoot still images or movies.

Full HD movi e at 24p/60i/60p w/uncompressed HDMI output
Capture Full 1920 x 1080 HD uncompressed clean-screen video files to external recording devices via an HDMI® connection in 60p and 60i frame-rates. Selectable in-camera AVCHD codec frames rates include super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p. MP4 codec is also available for smaller files for easier upload to the web.

Up to 5 fps shooting to capture the decisive moment
When your subject is moving fast, you can capture the decisive moment with clarity and precision by shooting at speeds up to 5 frames per second. New faster, more accurate AF tracking, made possible by Fast Hybrid AF, uses powerful predictive algorithms and subject recognition technology to track every move with greater speed and precision.

Multi-interface Shoe for flash and microphone flexibility
Unlike conventional cameras, the a7 features the advanced Multi-Interface Shoe that dramatically expands compatibility with Sony digital imaging accessories, thus raising the potential for photo/movie shooting.

4K Still image output by HDMI8 or WiFI for viewing on 4K TVs
Enjoy Ultra High Definition slide shows directly from the camera to a compatible 4K television. The a7 converts images for optimized 4K image size playback (8MP). Enjoy expressive rich colors and amazing detail like never before. Images can be viewed via an optional HDMI or WiFi.

TRILUMINOUS color outputs w ider color gamut to compatible devices
TRILUMINOS Color technology, allows you to experience photos and movies in rich, natural colors on any TV equipped with a TRILUMINOS Display. The expanded color gamut immerses you in those unforgettably colorful moments, from the complex shades in a shimmering blue sky to the delicate skin in a baby's face.

PlayMemories Camera Apps allows feature upgrades

Find apps to fit your shooting style from portraits, detailed close-ups, sports, time lapse, motion shot and much more. Use apps that shoot, share and save photos using Wi-Fi that make it easy to control and view your camera from smartphone, and post photos directly to Facebook or backup images to the cloud without connecting to a computer.11

Image Data Converter

No motion noted from shutter

I have been using the a7 and a7r. My first impressions are with the 24-70OSS lens. Image quality with the 7r is outstanding. Raw images are excellent, have used both Aperture and CS5 for editing. I have used both handheld and on my carbon fiber enduro tripod. I did not notice any motion from camera shake on images on the tripod, etc. I know that has been expressed as a theoretical concern, but I have not seen it yet. I found good and very accurate focusing using the center spot focus setting however with the adapter on the 70-200 f4 alpha lens. Battery life is short. Love the exp compensation knob on top. Plenty of dials for those of us wanting to adjust settings on the fly. OSS Zeiss 24-70 has good vibration control. Very important with the a7r.

Best Mirrorles Camera

By

from Chicago  -  Photo Enthusiast

My main subjects are candid family/friends so i need a camera that is quick to focus and easy to operate - the Sony A7 delivers. Auto focus never feels slow and the manual focusing aids makes it a legitimate focusing option. Nearly every button can be customized to your desired function, which helps make the shooting experience your own. It's incredible just how compact this full frame camera is. Negatives: - Short battery life. Get a spare. - Significant shutter sound. Not "loud", but noticeable. I guess I was spoiled by the nearly silent X100s.

Great for stills...

By

from NYC  -  Semi-Pro Photographer

The camera is great for still photography but does overheat when shooting a lot of video. Though I was aware of this before purchasing I was still disappointed when it stopped in the middle of a performance I was recording. 9-10 minutes at a time seem to be it maximum shooting time for video especially if shooting several segments.

A Small Wonder

By

from Los Angeles CA  -  Photo Enthusiast

After using a Sony A580 for a year, I felt a strong urge to go full-frame, so the advent of this new camera was perfect timing for me. Outstanding image quality at a very low price. Very intuitive and easy menu system, compared to its prececessor. The EVF is _awesome_ Having wifi and an available plugin for Lightroom tethering is icing on the cake. The only thing I worry about is the availability of lenses. Kit lens is just OK, I fear the coming lenses from Sony are going to be few and pricey. But I'm using old manual Minolta lenses with an adapter, easy and cheap.

Feels like the future

By

from Buffalo Grove, IL  -  Casual Photographer

Background: I used to shoot film as a kid, with a Canon AE-1 SLR, but didn't pursue photography seriously after high school. I picked photography up as a hobby again a couple of years ago, with a Sony NEX-5N. This camera feels like the future. When I was getting back into photography a couple of years ago I was put off by the size and bulk of enthusiast-level DSLRs, so I went with the Sony NEX line -- I wanted to actually *take* my camera with me! When I heard about this full-frame mirrorless camera, however, I had to jump on it -- and I'm glad I did. As a casual photographer for most of my life, I've been spoiled by live view, and won't shoot without it. That rules out traditional mirrored DSLRs. However, I was really looking forward to a camera that would approach pro-quality in terms of controls and features. The only way to get both is with this camera. Moving up from an APS-C sensor to full-frame has made a huge difference in terms of noise and depth-of-field (although the 16MP NEX-5N was pretty good about noise). The four -- count 'em, four -- control dials, plus the control wheel, give you access to all the immediate exposure settings you'd want to modify. Pros: Excellent image quality, full-frame-caliber DOF, solid weather-sealed construction, portability (relative to comparable DSLRs), powerhouse controls and features (relative to ILCs and hybrids), gorgeous viewfinder Cons: AF is a little finicky until you learn to work with it, JPEG compression seems to have some Sony-ish artifacts, kit lens is decent but not stellar, continuous shooting is slower than my NEX-5N, battery life is very short -- have 2 spares! I've taken this camera on two trips and to several gatherings, and also just walked around the city and shot some architecture, to learn the camera's quirks. Even just having the exposure controls is like a breath of fresh air, but I'm also very impressed so far by the image quality. If anything makes me change my mind, I'll update my review here.

After whole week of testing

By

from TX  -  Photo Enthusiast

I am very pleased to have such great camera. The quality of pictures are amazing and manual focus is also very handy when needed. The 3200 iso performance is still very good and 6400 your notice the noise but not too bad. I am still using my Canon 1D mark III for sure focus speed big Canon is still much faster but everything else Sony is doing good. I only don't use to it is the menu and too many icons text showing on the screen.

Sony A7 First Impressions

By

from Louisville, KY  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is my first mirrorless camera and it replaced my Sony A850. I was tired of lugging the A850 around on long hikes, but I did not want to give up the full frame sensor. So far I can find little to complain about except for the poorly written instruction manual which is very basic. Image quality is outstanding, the camera is easy to use and so much lighter than my old A850. I hardly notice the weight when carried on my shoulder which is exactly why I purchased this camera. I was concerned about using an electronic viewfinder, but so far I have found it to be excellent and I really enjoy the ability to modify the information displayed. I have read several reviews with complaints about the shutter release button location. I'm not sure what the issue is as the location is perfect for my hand, but the shutter release does has allot of play in it. So far I'm very pleased and excited about this camera.

Steven C  what is best faster memory card you suggest for Sony a7 I can buy together ? thanks Steven
AARON R  By at least 45mb/s. Faster if you can afford it. The camera buffers with the slow cards and even slows down when you play back the pictures! I bought some cheap "transcend" SD cards out of necessity (forgot my sd cards at home) and they buffered after every shot! I was shooting a wedding that day and it was SOOO annoying! The files are huge and you're better of with the faster cards! Bought 4 16gb sandisk 80 mb/s and have no regrets!
Tom S  I recently purchased the Sony A7 so still working to get familiar with everything. I have noticed that in "auto" mode or even in "A" mode it selects a very high ISO which I don't think is right...like 6400 on a relatively sunny day. Is there something I've missed on setup or is this normal? It seems the higher ISO results would cause less than perfect pictures. Thanks a lot!
BARBARA R  Tom, Something's not right. Check: Menu>Camera tab>page 3>ISO and see what your setting is. I leave mine at 100 or 200 in the menu. However, a better approach is to use: Menu>Settings (the cog) tab>page 6>Custom Key Settings>page 1>Control Wheel>and set to ISO. Now you can change your ISO on the fly no matter what mode you're using - look through the viewfinder, roll the control wheel and you'll see your ISO change in the viewfinder. Press the center of the control wheel to lock in the ISO you want. Hope this helps.
