Solid back-up

Bought this camera as a back-up to a Sony A6000 for travel. Surprised by the image quality -- not far off the A6000. When turned off will fit in a jacket pocket. Great for when you don't want to carry a larger camera on a walk or short trip but want something more substantial image-wise than a smart phone. Very good lens. Autofocus good but not screaming fast. Feels solid and well made, not cheap and plastic-y. Only down side was there is no ergonomic grip. Camera doesn't feel quite secure in the hand. Use the supplied wrist strap so not afraid of dropping it. Overall very happy with the purchase.

Very good camera

This tiny camera fits in a shirt pocket but takes superb photos. I bought it as a "carry camera", as I frequently leave my bulky DSLR cameras at home because they are a pain to lug around. On a recent vacation, I took this and a DSLR. After the first day when I saw the results, I left the DSLR in the hotel and just carried the little Sony in my pocket. The photos were outstanding. This camera truly lives up to its reviews.

Excellent Purchase - Highly Recommended

I wanted a powerful small camera. The open box Sony Cyber-Shot DCS-RX100 has exceeded my expectations in almost every way. While the camera takes great photos, for me it was not as intuitive as my Canon G10. This camera is more complicated. Once you learn how to use it you realize that it is a marvel of camera engineering. The open box camera I received looked brand new and untouched. Adorama shipped fast and has been an excellent company to deal with overall.

Great IQ, small, expensive

Very tiny and solid, surface is slippery, the Sony $15 glue-on grip improves handling very much. The menus are the same as the alpha 77 SLT which makes it a seamless transition from the SLT. The layout of the menus could be better though. The buttons and ring are very customizable. The ring that is click-less is a little off putting but one gets used to it. Image quality is very good. The lens while fast as a 1.8 at 28mm equivalent, quickly loses speed as it is zoomed. Video is great but the non-cancelable digital zoom (which also has a different zooming speed) is a bit of a pain. There are some other Sony quirks it inherits from the SLTs; to operate the HDR when you are in RAW mode, you first have to get out of RAW and then set HDR (rather than the camera doing it automatically), the Flash Auto setting is not available in the creative auto modes as an option, only On or Off. Overall a great camera, just quite expensive considering one can get a new Canon S110 these days for ~$220.

Sometimes DSLR's are overkill

This camera already has enough reviews about the specs and performance. I'll leave that out, but I'll share my experience of it as a casual photographer. As I get more exposure into photography, I start to learn about many photographs elements. I was pretty much thinking about upgrading to a DSLR after having played around with a superzoom, and learning that sometimes sensor size can cause a big difference. I also heard the phrase that the camera doesn't make the photo, it's just a tool for the photographer. I realize that, but I wanted a better tool than a 1/2.3' sensor size superzoom that would be more versatile for indoor and portraits. Also, I was a sucker for nice DOF effects, which is hard on a small sensor camera. Before looking at this P&S, I almost was going to jump into buying my first DSLR (a used 5D) for about the same price as I would have gotten this camera. Then I realized as a casual photographer who's interested in taking good pictures, it is a heavy investment in cameras to just be able to take casual photos that look nice. For me, I made the realization that if I choose to go down the DSLR route, I may just go around shooting with the "kit lens" that comes w/ whichever DSLR camera that I buy, if any, maybe one more lens that is +1 compared to the kit lens. It doesn't make sense. Moreover, I am starting to believe the phrase "The best camera you have is the camera you have with you". From speaking with other casual photographers like myself who own DSLRs, they more than often leave their cameras at home because it's too much gear and too heavy to lug around. This camera is the best camera to have with me when I go places. It takes great pictures, esp when I'm with others who don't have their DSLRs with them when we hang out. Since the 2 most important features I need as a casual photographer are low light capabilities for taking in door portraits and making professional looking photographs with DOF, this camera fits the bill w/o breaking the bank (comparing to buying a DSLR + lenses, of course). It's not cheap, but it gives me a sense of satisfaction to know that I can take just as good looking photos as I continue to hone my skill w/o having the temptation to spend money on gears that I will probably use only once or twice before letting them sit on the shelves collecting dust. In the future if I do decide that I've learned enough to really want to invest in a DSLR, this camera will STILL be a first choice for me to take around as it is pocketable. That's also a reason for me to get this camera first, learn more about photography, before deciding whether or not I really need a DSLR. At this time, the answer is no, but it may change. If you are a pro, or want to be like a pro, then this review won't be useful to you. However, if you are a casual photographer wanting to learn to take better looking pictures with a better tool, this camera will be a great choice for you, over buying a APS-C camera with a kit lens.

Even better than anticipated

I've had this camera for a couple of weeks and am still learning about all of the features. I bought it to replace a less sophisticated point and shoot camera so that I could carry it on trips without missing the features of my larger DSLR. The features I wanted were the large sensor size, manual exposure, and the ability to record Raw images. These features are straight forward to use and work well. The manual that comes with the camera does not sufficiently describe use of all the features so I purchased a book. Going through the book I'm amazed at the controls one has even on the auto setting. You can easily access settings to change white balance, exposure control, depth of field, etc. Another surprise to me is the ability to use manual focus. I'm only partway through my book so I'm looking forward to more surprises. In short, I love this camera and the photos it produces. For negatives, the grip is a little precarious with no specific handhold, no view finder, and no external charger. I can easily live without the first two and I purchased an external charger with extra battery. Also, I purchased an Adorama open-box item and found it to be perfect with a full USA warranty.

Great Compact Camera!

I bought this camera for my trip to Iceland. I didn't want to carry around a large camera. This camera is the best!

Image Quality. Period. No other camera this size comes close. I'm finding I'm leaving my DSLR at home a lot these days.

Fantastic camera

This is my first point and shoot camera and I'm very impressed with the quality and perfect images it produces so far. Although a little pricey i can recommend it without a second thought. Fantastic camera.

Really, Sony? Are you kidding?

This camera takes great pictures and has many amazing features... but how could Sony not pay attention to detail? Seriously! You can't adjust the timer for more than 10 seconds! Sometimes I want to take a picture of myself someplace; I set the timer, and I can't make it into the frame in 10 seconds. Why isn't an adjustable timer up to 30 seconds a STANDARD FEATURE? This seems like a no-brainer that Sony completely missed. But meanwhile, you can use 100 different HDR settings... great... too bad you can't use the timer in HDR! WHAT THE HECK!? How hard is it to let the camera use the timer in HDR? Canon has had that ability for YEARS! Another problem: the so-called intelligent auto setting won't default to the "vivid/warm" color setting. Every time you turn off the camera, and turn it back on, you have to re-adjust to turn up or down the warmth/vividness settings. UGH! I'm so disappointed with these features... mostly because it means I have to carry two cameras now, my old Canon and my new Sony, because I sure as heck can't use the worthless timer on the Sony... What a pain in the butt. Thanks Sony.
