About Sony DSC-RX10

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX10 has plenty of features to realize more of the potential in your movies. To record sound with precision worthy of professional production, connect a high-performance microphone through an input terminal. Monitor pristine stereo sound through premium-quality Sony headphones plugged into the headphone jack. A built-in HDMI output terminal also accommodates connection of a TV, computer or DVD player/recorder. Audio metering and recording level control are instrumental to keeping soundtracks smooth and consistent. Use the camera's Multi Interface Shoe and an optional XLR Adaptor Kit to hook up external recording, flash and other accessories. It all adds up to a set of professional-class capabilities that is unprecedented among all other compact cameras.

Containing back-illuminated technology and approximately 4x larger light-sensitive area that other compact DSC (digital still cameras) can't match, Sony's 20.2-megapixel 1.0-inch Exmor R CMOS sensor harnesses light and reduces image noise very efficiently. This, along with high settings of a wide ISO range, allow even photos of dimly lit scenes to look incredibly clear.

Sony DSC-RX10 Features

  • With the new RX10 - the compact digital camera that puts boundless picture-taking power in your hands and a fresh new outlook in your sights
  • A large F2.8 maximum aperture throughout an expansive 24-200mm (35mm equivalent) zoom range gives you ample opportunity to express your vision. Make a subject stand out - manipulate depth of field to defocus backgrounds for creative effect, as great photographers do
  • Close-up shooting is seamless. No switching to macro mode is needed. Zoom in all the way up to extreme telephoto on a subject as near as 11-inches (30cm) away. The built-in lens makes it more convenient for you to take impressive shots throughout a big range
  • An advanced aspherical lens (AA lens) reduces diameter and length and maintains high resolution even at image edges. A new Direct Drive SSM (Super Sonicwave Motor) stops lens movement with spot-on precision. Far-reaching optical flexibility minimizes mechanical dimensions
  • The groundbreaking new BIONZ X image processing engine not only maximizes picture quality in ways that only a seamlessly unified body and lens design can realize - it also faithfully reproduces textures and details in real time, as seen by the naked eye, with peerless high-speed processing
  • By minimizing digital artifacts that tend to overemphasize hard outlines and rough edges when pictures are reproduced, detail reproduction technology makes images noticeably more lifelike, clean and natural-looking in every detail, texture and dimension
  • Now, noise reduction is individually adjusted based on imaging pattern variations, for superior clarity and finer details throughout even images shot in low light
  • High-speed AF is remarkably smooth thanks to the Direct Drive SSM (Super Sonicwave Motor) with precision-engineered focusing stop positions designed to minimize focusing lens travel distance, which shortens focusing time
  • Choose among three concentric Flexible Spot frames for greater focusing versatility and precision than other cameras' fixed-focus spot frame systems can provide
  • Just press the shutter button halfway to activate Lock-on AF. It precisely focuses even on moving subjects by continuously adjusting target frame size based on its recognition of subject characteristics
  • Applying advanced detection technology, this new Eye AF function detects and focuses on a subject's eye, even if the subject is facing or looking slightly away from the camera
  • An abundance of powerful higher-performance functions and options are invaluable for capturing moving images of superior resolution and stunning clarity with minimal noise, even while zooming on the action
  • As Full High Definition (Full HD) movie recording has become a standard of high-performance video recording and playback, Sony advances better ways to take advantage of its potential
  • Clear, uncompressed digital movie signal output can be transferred to an external monitor/recorder (connected via the HDMI terminal) simultaneously in real time from the RX10. The shooting info display can be turned off for even cleaner views of such movies on an external monitor/recorder
  • See spectacular clarity, contrast and detail in every scene, regardless of conditions, on the built-in, bright, high-resolution OLED Tru-Finder. Four dual-sided aspherical lenses provide a big, approx. 33-degree view angle and maintain excellent edge-to-edge visibility of the electronic viewfinder
  • For faster, more intuitive camera operation, you can customize a total of seven buttons by assigning up to 40 types of functions among them. As a result, you will gain more convenient access to your selection of frequently used functions, right at your fingertips
  • Magnesium alloy top and front casings make the RX10 light, solid and robust enough for long, rigorous use by advanced photographers and videographers. The camera's dust- and moisture-resistant design even allows shooting in rugged outdoor environments
  • A new, improved graphical user interface makes access to frequently used functions absolutely effortless. Just press the Fn button to display a list of them
  • An approximately 1,229K-dot tiltable 3.0-inch White Magic LCD lets you shoot comfortably from various positions. The display has the flexibility to be tilted within a range of angles extending from about 84 degrees upward to about 45 degrees downward
  • Just download the free PlayMemories Mobile app, then instantly connect via Wi-Fi or NFC (near field communication) by touching a compatible Android smartphone or tablet to the camera
  • This free, easy-to-use image management software can be installed onto Windows and Mac computers, for downloading photos and movies which can then be viewed, organized, edited, retouched, printed, burned to disk, shared or uploaded to social networking websites
  • Virtually relive moments when you witnessed such nuances as the shades of a shimmering blue sky or a rosy complexion. The RX10 supports Sony TRILUMINOS Color for viewing photos in rich, natural colors on a TRILUMINOS Display

Came defective, Sony won't take care of

from Seattle, WA  -  Semi-Pro Photographer

Was very excited to receive this camera, with all the great reviews here and elsewhere. I'm a former pro photographer, been doing digital photography since 1998. I wanted this for casual trip photography, when I don't want to bring my Canon DSLR or Leica M9 kit. This is probably the 15th or so digital camera body I have purchased. When I got the camera, the SD slot was a little "sticky." I did not occur to me at the time that it was defective (my HUGE mistake). I was very careful to insert and remove the card "gingerly." About 31 days past the purchase, the card refused to insert more than half way. Now with electronics, you don't force things. Adorama said I was past the return limit, send it to Sony. I sent it to Sony. They informed me that I had broken my camera and would have to pay $260 to have it repaired. (Stop and think about how you would intentionally try to break your SD card slot, could you even do it?) I phoned them and we had a heated discussion. I reluctantly agreed to pay $100 when they said they would fix that day and ship expedited the next, because in one week was the first trip that I actually bought the camera for (Mexico). My camera did not arrive. While in Mexico I checked the status and it said it was being repaired. I emailed but got no response. I finally posted in a Sony customer forum about how dissappointed I was. This made someone email me. After a couple of days they said they found my camera and would ship it. They gave me a tracking number. When Fedex said it arrived, I emailed a neighbor to pick it up. It wasn't there. I checked the tracking more closely and it had been delivered to West Virginia (I'm in Seattle). I emailed them and they said they would trace it. After I had been home a few days, another neighbor came over with a box he had seen on my doorstep and stored it for me. It was the camera (different tracking number of course). AND IT WASN'T FIXED! So I emailed back my contact and reported that. I told them I no longer wanted this camera, please refund me in full, fix the camera and sell as a refurb. Refused. I asked for the name and number of the person in charge of their group. Refused. At this point I contacted Adorama and said I know I'm past the 30 days, but surely you have reps with Sony, can you help me out, get some kind of better response. I also said that I would be buying a Fuji XT-1 and numerous lenses to replace this RX-10, and I would buy at Adorama if they would help me out. But, no they would not. I then reported how I had been treated on several photography site forums. One person said email I did that and someone called me. She said she would look into it. I reiterated with her the number of sony products I have and use. Easily over 15k of items. I go back to cassette walkman days with Sony. After three business days she got back to me and said the best they would do is ship it for free to the repair center again and repair it. No refund on the $100 non-repair. I told her that I'm an honest person with plenty of money. If I broke my own camera it would not be a problem. I said "there are only two possibilities, that is was defective, or I broke it. Since I know I did not break it, you are calling me a liar." So that is where I'm at today. I'll ship it, possibly they'll repair it. When I get it back, I have to ebay it. We need our cameras to be our trusted companions, and this one surely is not. I'll never do business with Sony again. And although Adorama was not obligated to help me, they could have, so no points to them either.

Exciting new camera !

from Chicago  -  Photo Enthusiast

I love the features and the quality of this camera it almost seems hard to take a bad picture. Intelligent Auto + takes all the guess work out of correct capture setting, yet there are plenty of custom and manual settings to play with. Nice for home/family shots and getting ready to test on vacation. It's not a pocket camera so I purchased a RX100M2 which is equally impressive--Well Christmas and my birthday are done :)

Great Camera!

from Wisconsin  -  Photo Enthusiast

I used to have a Sony F828. Loved that camera. The RX10 reminds me of the 828. But much better. I also got a real nice price on adorama.

love this camera

from Broadview Heights, OH  -  Photo Enthusiast

After I purchased this camera, I sold my DSLR and my superzoom lens. While giving up some in terms of image noise, it makes up for it in sharpness and focusing speed in poorly lit environments. I purchased it at a sale price, and to be honest, I don't know if it would have paid full price for it, but it was totally worth what I paid for it. Love this lens, love the handling of the camera. Can easily handle images up to 3200 iso without a significant drop in quality (to my non-professional eyes). Great vibration reduction. I can get images at 1/10 sec that I couldn't get with my DSLR.

Just a point & shoot ? I don't think so.

from Peosta Iowa  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is a great little camera. Traded my DSLR and lenses for it and don't miss carrying all that gear around. Takes great photos and its video potential is amazing.

New purchase.

from Illinois River Vally  -  Semi-Pro Photographer

There are many reviews of the RX10 out there and I have not yet receive mine anyway. So let me just say that Adorama shipping and service are top notch. I ordered online, had a problem and needed to cancel. The phone line was jammed, as it was a few days before Christmas. Sent a brief email to support canceling the order then went to submit a new order. The second order charge was declined by the bank, and I was informed by support at Adorama and provided a phone number to call. I got through this time and with the help of Cleo M. canceled the first order. She also cleared up some questions I had about the extended warranty I purchased and the backorder status on an item in my cart. There was one question Cloe M. didn't know the answer to but she politely excused herself and promptly got the answer. After I called the bank I spoke with another rep for Adorama and they were just as helpful. Additionally in between phone calls I got an email from someone at support saying that they received my email request for order cancellation but that it was already canceled by Cleo M. at phone support. I had many problems with my order (my fault) but with the help of great support my order shipped same day. Adorama has super competitive pricing, fast shipping, and most important of all rock solid support with a great return policy. And while Adorama might not deluge your email box with automated order status updates, they are busy at work making sure your product ships out the door ASAP. Rock on Adorama, rock on.

Great little camera!

from Seattle, WA

I bought this for when I'm travelling, but not on a real photo mission. It's smaller and lighter than just my 24-70 f/2.8 zoom! I'm an IQ zealot, and this camera does not dissappoint for its size.
