Sony HVL-F20AM Features

  • Extends flash range beyond camera's built-in flash: Though compact and lightweight, the HVL-F20AM has a maximum range twice that of the built-in flash units on a230, a330 and a380 cameras. This is represented as the guide number (GN) of 20 with a 50mm focal distance at ISO 100
  • Bounce flash enables shadowless indirect lighting: When set to 'indoor' shooting mode, the flash points up to bounce light off the ceiling for shadowless illumination of your subject. When set to the 'outdoor' shooting mode, the flash directs light directly at your subject
  • Built-in diffuser for wide & telephoto shooting: With the built-in diffuser the flash illumination covers an angle of view of 27mm at the default Standard Position setting. If users want to shoot at a greater distance, they can rotate the dial on the side of the flash unit to the 'Tele' Position
  • Easy intuitive operation: Unlike most external flash units, the HVL-F20AM has no dedicated ON/OFF switch. Instead, power is automatically switched on simply by raising the flash unit into the shooting position
  • Light (90g / 3.2oz), slim (24mm / 1") ultra-compact design: With a weight of only 90g (approx.) and a thickness of only 24mm (1 inch), the HVL-F20AM is so compact it can simply be folded down and left mounted on the camera when it is not in use, or detached and carried in a shirt pocket
  • Elegant and attractive styling: Viewed from any angle, the HVL-F20AM's revolutionary body is sleek, slim and virtually protrusion-free. The new design also eliminates the LCD display panel found on many conventional flash units, further contributing to easy-use simplicity and stylish design
  • ADI Flash Metering System: The ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) flash metering system offers the optimum flash metering and automatic white-balance compensation regardless of the background conditions or the subject's reflectance
  • Wireless flash trigger function (DSLR-A900 only): When teamed with the a900, the HVL-F20AM can also be used to trigger wireless flash setups. Please note, however, that this functionality is only available with DSLR-A900 and does not include luminosity ratio control

Great Value for money

I have an A300 with the Zeiss 16-80DT Zoom lens. Problem is that the built in flash leaves a shadow for close distance shots and it isn't effective for long distance. Basically, poor design since the flash doesn't sit high enough from the body. This on the other hand is an excellent little flash if you don't want additional weight and bulk to carry around. Great job without the added weight

By

I wanted a flash for my Sony A850 but not the extra weight like most external flashes. Bounce flash is great for taking portraits.

Great Compact Flash

By

from Denver CO.  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I shoot a lot at car shows. And in that situation this flash works extremly well. I can go between exterior and dark interior shots very quickly and with lovely results. The auto on/off when you raise or fold the unit saves valuable battery life and makes shooting less clostraphobic than have one right in your face all the time. It makes dealing with high contrast subjects a breeze rarely overpowering even in tight quarters. I do have some minor gripes. I wish that it used AAs instead of AAAs so I don't have to change out batteries as often. I have to remeber to carry a spare set on long shoots. They might be able to squeeze a bit more power with AAs too. Long range shots are not it's forte. But for precise lighting in the short to medium range its a great unit. Combined with my A350s managment the results are great in lighting and tone quality. and it doesnt make people see spots.

The Amazing Compact Flash

By

from Baltimore, Maryland  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I was amazed at how compact the flash was when it first arrived to me. But its extremely amazing. Do not be fooled by this compact flash. I loved that its simple to use and it gets the job done. I was never in a hurry to get a flash for my DSLR Sony Alpha A390, which I also purchased from Adorama a year ago. But now I can't believe I didn't get it sooner. I love it and glad that I purchased it.

It's OK

By

It's a good all around product. The fatal flaw is battery use. It uses up battery at a very fast rate.

A Very Valuable Addition

By

from Chattanooga, TN

This flash exceeded my expectations and added new dimensions to my capabilities. Battery life is surprisingly good, and the output is more than acceptable for my simple needs. I chose to install standard, non-rechargeable batteries and have yet to replace them after way over 100 photos. The range of the direct-mode was impressive and the bounce-mode easily illuminates a large room with few, if any, shadows. This was very clearly one of the most valuable additions I have made to my inventory and sincerely have no regrets.

Excellent for its intended purpose

By

from SE Pennsylvania  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is a great tool within its limits. It is a little stronger than the built in flash and does sit higher on the camera so that helps with any shadow cast by some lens or lens hood. Probably better suited for full frame cameras but does offer some benefits on my a300.
