About Sony NEX-5n

Get the interchangeable lens camera of your dreams capable of capturing astonishing 16.1MP stills or full 1920x1080 HD video in about half the size as its DSLR counterparts. It's the interchangeable lens camera that fits in your pocket. Enjoy Full HD 1080/60p or 24p movies, astounding low-light pictures, continuous shooting up to 10 fps, incredible panorama shots and a 3.0-inch tiltable Live View touch screen LCD. Use the Photo Creativity Touch interface to easily adjust images on the go or try out Sweep Panorama for incredible landscapes in 2D or 3D.

Sony NEX-5n Features

  • DSLR quality in your pocket: This is the world's smallest interchangeable lens digital still camera using a large APS-C size sensor (as of Aug 2011). The removal of the conventional mirror box and viewfinder results in a camera body that is about half the size and weight of a standard DSLR camera
  • Full HD movie shooting 60p/24p: Record Full HD 1920x1080 video in a variety of frame rates from 60p for super smooth action to 24p for a more cinematic feel
  • Object Tracking AF via Touch LCD: Object Tracking AF can lock onto a specified object and maintain focus even as the subject moves. This hassle-free mode allows unpredictable subjects to stay in focus even while zooming
  • 11 Picture Effect modes: Posterization (Color, B/W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow), Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera (Normal, Cool, Warm, Green, Magenta), Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome and Miniature
  • Sweep Panorama Mode: Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together. Up to 23 MP image size. Up to 202 degrees maximum sweep angle (16mm focal length)
  • P/A/S/M operating modes: The NEX-5N offers a full range of controls for video and still shooting from the beginner's iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority & Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence & exercise greater creative control
  • BIONZ image processor: The brain of the camera is a refined version of Sony's BIONZ image processor. Its chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 25600 sensitivity
  • Phase Detect AF for E-mount bodies w/ adapter: Both the LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters allows you to attach A-mount lenses to your E-mount camera
  • Stamina battery power for up to 430 shots: Take up to 430 shots on a single charge with Sony lithium ion Stamina battery power. Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence
  • Up to 10 fps shooting: Capture the decisive moment in sports and get the ideal baby photo. Up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 16.1 MP resolution. Standard continuous shooting speeds vary based upon shooting conditions and memory card speeds
  • Photo Creativity Touch: The Photo Creativity interface enables you to easily enjoy the creative expression through direct photographic control in an easy to use interface. Changes can be combined/removed and viewed in real time on the LCD making it a breeze to make adjustments
  • World's shortest release time lag (0.02 sec): In photography, shutter lag, or release time, is the delay between triggering the shutter by fully depressing the shutter button and when the photograph is actually recorded
  • Peaking AF display: The Peaking AF display makes precise manual focusing much easier by highlighting the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors ( white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focal plane can make or break your shot
  • 6-image layering: The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. The camera then combines the data from the 6 different images to create a single image
  • Intelligent Auto Focus: Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum
  • Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO): Dynamic Range Optimizer improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
  • 25-point Auto Focus: 25 sensors cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame
  • 16.1 MP Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor: You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements. Thanks to the APS-C sensor size and Sony Exmor APS HD CMOS technology, the camera achieves high resolution with no penalty in low-light sensitivity or sensor noise
  • Tiltable 3.0" Touch LCD: Sony's 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs
  • 3D Sweep Panorama Mode: Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television
  • Auto HDR: High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot
  • iAUTO mode: Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. Takes advantage of Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization without leaving auto mode so you always get the best shot
  • HDMI output: Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output

Great travel camera

After weeks waiting for the NEX-7n release date to be announced, I decided that the NEX-5n with its stellar reviews would be a great addition to my equipment set. After weeks waiting for the NEX-7n release date to be announced, I decided that the NEX-5n with its stellar reviews would be a great addition to my equipment set. I also own a Canon 60D and Canon 5D Mark 2 but both are bulky to travel with. With two days under my belt with the NEX-5n, it has been a pleasure to shoot with. Yes, the menus can be somewhat odd to navigate and you discover that some of the options don't exist with others (HDR with JPEG+RAW for example) but bear in mind, the average knowledgable user can take it out of the box, charge the battery and shoot. I do like the small compact flash it comes with. I also don't find the omission of a viewfinder that much of an issue (one of the reasons I was going to wait for the 7). Tilt screen is a pleasure to use. Lens correction profiles already exist in Lightroom so I'm a very happy camper. Will I give up my 5D? Perhaps. But only for the next 5D, whatever that might look like. Meanwhile, the NEX-5n will be by my side more of the time. My only regret is virtually no one has the 16mm lens which I may spring for in the future (would have to see how much wider it really is). Waiting for the package to become available (you save $100) was not an option. I will also be interested to see how the macro lens performs. With the 5D and the 100mm macro, it's a high bar to hit but already I think the Sony might do very well.

Clicking noise is stopping me from buying this :(

I have been to stores after stores looking for a nice DSLR. I was about to buy Canon T3i when I saw this Nex 5. It was exactly what I was looking for. Went to Sony flagship store and they showed me when you record a video and move a lot, the noise comes, but when you are recording slowly there is no noise. I agree to that but whats the gurantee i will only be using it slowly. I am spending so much money, I dont want any noise at all. What is sony doing regarding this problem? Nothing, all they offer is send for service and they will fix it. Whats the point of buying a new camera when you know you need to send for fix right away. It takes out all the joy of buying a new camera. Sony needs to recall all its products and fix it right away. I started with $500 budget for a camera and because of Nex 5N I am ready to spend the money for it but not till Sony fixes its problem. beside that its a great camera, I tried it and I loved it. 3D panoramic is awesome, if you want just for camera use then go for it. for video use then wait it out.

Fantastic Surprise

By

I own two top Nikon DSLRs, the Nikon D7000 & D800. The NEX-5N competes on an equal basis with the D7000 and admirably up against the D800 if large prints are not your goal. Really sharp photos can be had easily with this camera. I love its light weight & VR. I highly recommend this camera.

I had doubts, not anymore, I love this camera

By

Prior to purchase I shot on a Nikon d80 with a Nikor 50mm 1.8 that I was very comfortable with. Being frustrated most of the time with the noise level I sold my entire kit. I was skeptical about a camera without a viewfinder, especially out side. I was concerned about the ease of the menu & how I was going to change meter, WB, iso & af or mf on the fly. I can admit that at first use I had serious doubts, I missed some good shots. I missed my D80. However I had fun. I became really inspired. No view finder is no problem when using the peak focus feature, it is amazing! To shoot outside set the lcd to sunny day, it works great! For quick access to all your settings just set the soft keys, I can now navigate the 5n with more ease than I did my Nikon. The image quality from this sensor is brilliant. Little to no noise even in very low light. If you are debating on making the move from dslr to mirror less I can tell you that after 20 years shooting dslr just 6 months with my nex & I will never go back.

This camera wont disappoint!

By

The NEX-5n is simply an amazing camera. It is a great camera for pretty much all aspects of photography as its high (IOS), and exceptional AF allow for anyone young and old to take beautiful pictures with ease. I have used my 5n camera for landscapes and taking pictures of the family and it never fails to take a great picture. One thing I must point out is the large APS-C built into the camera which is the heart and soul of this camera. The larger the sensor, typically means the higher the quality of the picture and in this case the 5n is a perfect example. Overall this is an amazing camera, and a great camera to step up to from any point and shoot camera.

Remarkable Camera

By

The high ISO performance is outstanding, especially in this price range. The 10 eps is almost comical it's so fast and it works flawlessly... one RAW/on Jpeg at 10 eps! Fastest shooting camera I've ever had! I had the 3c version but the 5n is so much better it's hard to talk about it! I have the Sony 18-200mm zoom and I just don't ever take it off... I did order a lens adapter for Canon lenses so I will play with that a little... I have several very wide angle lenses I'd like to try with the 5n and see how it works! All in all, one of the best and most fun cameras I've acquired in years! Build quality is excellent and I haven't had any problems at all with it, in any manner. It's fast, works as promised, and delivers outstanding image quality.

Great little camera and the image quality is better than any of the other mirrorless cameras I have tried. Close to and better in some ways than my E5.

Brand new with Click Problem!!

By

Unfortunately, my camera bought on last friday came with this "click" problem! It is unbelievable! Why Sony did not spread this information to the Sony Stores? By the way, the camera performance is awesome!

Awesome Image

By

I have been looking for a longer time for a compact camera that would have the same image quality as a DSLR plus fast shutter speed. I hated the shutter lag of the P&S plus the image quality is not as good. I started to use digital back in 2003 with the Sony F717. I love the tilt LCD of the Sony F717. I went from Sony F717 to Canon 20D then 30D, 40D and currently 7D. I still have the 7D but I'm contemplating selling it together with all my L lenses. The 5N is that good! especially with high ISO which is better than the 7D. Over all I'm very happy with this camera and would recommend this to anyone that wanted to get away from the heavy DSLR load without giving up the image quality plus faster shutter speed and better high ISO performance.
