About Sony SLT-A37

The Sony SLT-A37 is a full-featured starter DSLR, and a step-up camera for photogtraphy amateurs and enthusiasts "graduating" from advanced point-and-shoot cameras, as well as for people who want high-resolution stills and the ability to record HD video. The SLT-A37 features Sony's exclusive Translucent Mirror Technology: The mirror doesn't flip-up during exposure, which allows Sony to make the camera's burst rate a category-leading 7fps, which is best in this class of camera, and the viewfinder image doesn't "black out" during the moment of exposure. High ISO of 16000 for outstanding low-light performance, multiframe noise reduction, 3D sweep panorama and sophisticated autofocus and metering systems help the small, relatiely lightweight SLT-A37 stand out in a competitive field while offering creative photographers room to grow at a reasonable price.

Sony SLT-A37 Features

  • Translucent Mirror Technology: Conventional DSLRs can shoot. Or they can focus with the speed and precision of Phase Detection AF. They cannot do both at once. The SLT-A37 utilizes Translucent Mirror Technology that directs light to both the image sensor and the Phase Detection AF sensor simultaneously.
  • 16.1 megapixel resolution: You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements. Thanks to the 16.1 megapixel APS-C sensor size and Sony Exmor® APS HD CMOS technology, the camera achieves high resolution with no penalty in low-light sensitivity or sensor noise.
  • ISO 16000 sensitivity: Incredibly clear low-light pictures without sacrificing detail, made possible bythe low-noise Exmor® APS HD CMOS image sensor and refined BIONZ® image processor.
  • Full HD 1080/60i/24p movies: This is one of the very few DSLRs with super smooth 1080/60i/24p Full HD recording capability. Records in your choice of 1080/60i or 24p AVCHD format orin PC-friendly 1080/30p MP4 format
  • Tele Zoom High Speed Shooting: The translucent mirror makes it far easier to capture the decisive soccer kick or your baby at her absolute cutest. The Tele Zoom High Speed shooting mode shoots up to 7 fps at 8.4 MP while maintaining continuous auto focus and auto exposure.
  • Auto Portrait Framing: Simply photograph a person and Auto Portrait Framing will save an additional, optimally framed image in portrait or landscape orientation. Combining Face Detection and By Pixel Super Resolution technologies with rule of thirds, Auto Portrait Framing provides beautifully composed and appealingly portraits.
  • Eye-Level Electronic Viewfinder: The Tru-finder Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) is super bright, easy to see with anultra-sharp 1.1x magnification factor. For those who require a longer eye-point (eyeglass wearers), it also provides a function for adjusting the finder magnification ratio.
  • Tilting 3" 230K LCD dot screen: Tilt LCD up 135° or down 55° to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss.
  • Clear Image Zoom: Utilizing Sony's exclusive By Pixel Super Resolution Technology, Clear Image Zoom increases the effective focal length of your lens up to 2x by digitally magnifying the center of your image with nearly imperceptible degradation that provides greater shooting flexibility
  • Superior Auto+ mode The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode, then quickly shootsand combines up to six shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using Auto HDR technology and lower image noise using 3 shots layering technology.
  • Sony Exmor technology: Conventional image sensors use only a handful of analog-to-digital (A/D) converters, which can slow you down. The Exmor® sensor provides more than 4,000 column-parallel A/D converters. This helps enable continuous shooting at up to 7frames per second.
  • BIONZ image processor: The brains of the camera is a refined version of Sony's BIONZ® image processor. Its chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000 sensitivity. Also enables up to 5.5 fps continuous shooting at full resolution, Sweep Panorama mode and more.
  • Live View in LCD or EVF: You can use both the LCD monitor and Electronic Viewfinder for composing shots. Both provide a what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview of white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure and 100% framing accuracy, plus informative on-screen displays.
  • Compact, lightweight design: Eliminating the moving mirror also reduces the camera's size and weight. It's not just remarkably advanced; it's notably small and light.
  • SteadyShot INSIDE stabilization: is built into the camera body itself. You'll reduce blur with every a-mount lens, including macro and wide-aperture standard zoom lenses.
  • Anti-Dust Technology: Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistentlyclear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor.
  • Built-in Auto Pop-Up Flash: The built-in Guide Number 10 flash2 automatically pops up and fires as needed when the camera is set to certain scene selection modes. The built-in flash can also trigger a wireless accessory flash (sold separately). The integrated hot shoe enables you to expand your lighting options
  • Phase Detection Auto Focus: While Contrast Detection AF often hunts for correct focus, Phase Detection AF knows exactly where correct focus is, and goes straight for it. The Sony® SLT-A37 provides Phase Detection AF when capturing HD movies as well as during still image capture
  • Main Sensor Live View with Quick AF: Main Sensor Live View with Quick AF combines the optimum focus of Phase Detection with high quality Live View images right from the main sensor. This ismade possible by Sony® Translucent Mirror Technology.
  • 15-point Auto Focus: To maximize the value of Translucent Mirror Technology, Sony incorporates Phase Detection AF of great sophistication. Three cross sensors maximize precision.
  • High Speed AF for Full HD Movie Capture: The High Speed AF Full HD Movie retains the same fast, precise Phase Detection you enjoy for still images.1 It's a decisive advantage for tracking fast-moving subjects and a major benefit of Translucent Mirror Technology.
  • HDMI® output for HD viewing: Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV.9 The camera includes an HDMI® output. In addition, the BRAVIA® Sync system works with compatible Sony® BRAVIA HDTVs enabling you to control camera playback using the television's remote.
  • Graphic Display: Clarifies the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, as well as the effect each has on photographic results.
  • Index and Slide Show Display: Quickly review your photos using 6- or 12-frame index views, or as an automatic slide show with fade-in/fade-out effect.
  • PhotoTV HD compatibility: Optimizes compatible BRAVIA® televisions for gorgeous display of digital pictures
  • Slot for two media types: For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC/SDXC media (Class 4 or higher recommended). (Memory card is required. All are sold separately.)
  • Powerful supplied software: To help you refine and manage your images and video, the camera is supplied withImage Data Converter (ver 4.0) RAW development software software and Play Memories Home image organization software

Sony A37 - Single Lens Translucent

This is really a huge advance over using a camera with a flip up mirror which was invented in 1949. For the first time Sony has also included all of the features of the higher end cameras in their entry level A37. The A37 is a NEX-F3 in an Alpha SLT format. The size of the A37 is perfect for me. This is really a huge advance over using a camera with a flip up mirror which was invented in 1949. For the first time Sony has also included all of the features of the higher end cameras in their entry level A37. The A37 is a NEX-F3 in an Alpha SLT format. The size of the A37 is perfect for me. The grip on the A37 has been improved with a deeper groove for your fingers. I tried out the A57. It's much bigger and heavier than the A37. I have to grip really hard to hold it one handed (just like I did with the A100.) The A37 is much lighter and smaller which means that it fits perfectly in a small camera bag together with a couple of spare lenses. The camera and the 18-55 mm lens weighs just a pound and a half. I mostly use the EVF (which includes diopter correction) but when I need the LCD I have no issues at all with it. Of course, I don't review photos on it. No camera LCD is good enough to reliably do that. The tilt mechanism makes it easy to compose shots that require you to hold the camera above or below you. If you don't use the EVF as your primary composing tool then I would suggest you look at the NEX F3 as it's an otherwise great camera that just lacks the things I want such a built in EVF and support for A mount lenses without an adapter. For $600 my new A37 does everything I want it to do. Great images and videos are just as good as more expensive cameras. I only shoot mp4 videos so the lack of 1080p AVCHD won’t be missed. Standard h264 mp4 video is so much easier to edit than AVCHD. The A37 has the 3rd generation of the Bionz processor which is also used in all of the current generation of SLT and NEX cameras including the flagship model the A77. This new processor allows for better low light shot with an ISO range from 100 to 16,000. In addition the new processor makes possible continuous 15 point phase detection auto focus, 5.5 fps shooting at full resolution and full HD video recording. Together with a 16mp sensor and a good lens such as the 18-55 you have everything you need to take great photos. Features such as clear image zoom that can digitally extend the range of any lens and a viewfinder with 100% coverage are wonderful. Anyone can operate this camera which now has two auto settings; intelligent auto and superior auto which makes it possible for even a beginner to take great photos. I'm not a beginner. I've been a photographer for 4 decades and this is the best camera I've ever owned. The A37 is a major upgrade from my previous camera both in image quality and in handling. The 3 things to consider are the processor, the image sensor and the lens. I own 3 Minolta lenses and 2 Sony lenses. They are all good to excellent and that includes the 18-55 'kit' lens. With a new 3rd generation Bionz processor, a 16mp sensor and the 18-55 lens you will have everything you need to take excellent photos. The specs are awesome because this is one awesome camera. Sure Sony has to offer some 'step up' features in other models but they are really nothing essential. You will also have spent $150 less which you can use to buy accessories such as an extra battery, a fast SDHC card and still have change in your pocket. Rated 5 stars by Photographyblog.com

Amazing camera!

By

from Sao Paulo, Brasil  -  Photo Enthusiast

This camera offers a easy way to take your pictures with a quality of the highiest professionals DSLRs. The best in this camera are: - the battery; works easily 3 days for me. - the menus; pre-config menus thats help a lot to an amateur to take high quality pictures. The worst is the LCD screen. Theres a low quality resolution and do no TURN 180º.

Please - Auto Focus micro adjustment

By

from San Francisco, CA

Please make AF Micro Adjustment (SLT-A77) available across the whole range of SLT cameras -- being able to correct for the normal manufacturing variation within lens and camera tolerances is the only way photographers will be able to get the best out of these excellent cameras. Please make a firmware update for the SLT-35 to provide Focus Peaking! The SLT-35 was obsoleted after just 8 months and that's given me some buyers remorse.

Great Beginner DSLR

By

from New York, New York

This is a great camera to have if you're a beginner into the DSLR world. This is my first DSLR and i'm in love with it absolutely. The picture quality is great and the movie quality for both the MP4 and the Full HD and AVCHD is very good as well. This camera is very creative which is why I love it, the sales representatives that helped recommend this camera to me were very good and know what they were talking about and for a beginner into the DSLR world, this camera can keep you busy and can help advance your photography skills and make you into a better photographer but can "up" your picture quality and also movie quality if you use this feature on it. Go and get it! It's definately worth it.

Best purchase ever (so far)

By

from Englewood, OH

The 2 sales people I have were great and very helpful. I hope they both get credit.. I am tracking it now. It seems like it will be here much faster than I originally expected. I have been wanting a digital camera for a long time but the expense was too hi but this sale put it possible and the lens seems perfect. My final review will be if I can use the Minolta year 2000 auto focus lenses I have from my Minolta Maxxum 7 camera I have like everyone has told I me I can. (That is what the so far means.)
