About Sony SLT-A55

Capture the decisive moment with the alpha 55V, Sony's top-of-the-line Translucent Mirror Technology DSLR. Now you can focus and shoot simultaneously for fast, precise performance. And because the mirror never moves, the time needed to raise and lower the mirror is eliminated. This all helps continuous shooting up to 10 frames per second, complete with continuous auto focus. Auto focus is also visibly faster in Live View and HD Movie modes. There's also built-in GPS photo tagging that lets you map your memories on your compatible computer.

The long-telephoto Sony zoom lens provides high magnification and a broad 14x zooming range in compact, lightweight design that makes it easy to carry-and its 35mm-equivalent range of 27mm wide-angle to 375mm telephoto excels at capturing faraway objects, outdoor performances, complex scenery and crisp close-ups.

Sony SLT-A55 Features

  • You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements. Thanks to the 16.2 megapixel APS-C sensor size and Sony Exmor APS HD CMOS technology, the camera achieves high resolution with no penalty in low-light sensitivity or sensor noise
  • Records in 1080/60i AVCHD format, 1080/30p high definition in PC-friendly MP4 format and standard definition 480/30p in MP4 format
  • The Tru-finder Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) is super bright, easy to see with 1.1x magnification, ultra-sharp with 1.44 million dots (1.15 effective) and provides 100% frame coverage. Exposure preview and informative overlays make operation easy
  • Tilt it up or down to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss. Tilt and swivel under the camera for self-portraits. Fold it flush to the camera with the LCD exposed for shooting or protected for travel
  • You can use both the LCD monitor and Electronic Viewfinder for composing shots. Both provide a what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview of white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure and 100% framing accuracy, plus informative on-screen displays
  • Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies, camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode, then quickly shoots & combines up to six shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using Auto HDR technology & lower image noise using 6 shots layering technology
  • Clarifies the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, as well as the effect each has on photographic results
  • Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output. In addition, the BRAVIA Sync system works with compatible Sony BRAVIA HDTVs enabling you to control camera playback using the television's remote
  • Take up to 330 shots on a single charge with Sony Stamina battery power. Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence
  • To help you shoot more effectively, the built-in flash automatically pops up and fires as needed when the camera is set to certain scene selection modes. The built-in flash can also trigger a wireless accessory flash (sold separately)
  • The translucent mirror makes it far easier to capture the decisive soccer kick or your baby at her absolute cutest. The Sony SLT-A55V camera shoots full, 16.2 MP resolution pictures at up to 10 fps while maintaining continuous auto focus and auto exposure
  • With 19.5 times the area of the typical camcorder image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between amateur and professional-looking video, delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and gorgeous, blurred backgrounds
  • Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats
  • The eye-level finder is one of the reasons people love DSLRs. But that finder goes dark whenever you shoot HD Movies. The Sony SLT-A55V enables you to shoot movies with the added stability you get holding the camera up to your face and using the eye-level finder for framing a scene and focus
  • Sony's Xtra Fine LCD monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further in bright sunlight
  • The Sony SLT-A55V is the world's first consumer camera to provide Phase Detection AF when capturing HD movies as well as during still image capture, either using the viewfinder or Live View on the LCD
  • Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter and sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together. Up to 23 MP image size
  • The brains of the camera is a refined version of Sony's BIONZ image processor. Its chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 12800 sensitivity. Also enables 10 fps continuous shooting at full resolution, Sweep Panorama mode and more
  • Saves your pictures as compact JPEG files or ultra-high quality RAW files or both. RAW files save images prior to de-mosaicing, white balance, sharpness and color enhancement. This retains maximum latitude for enhancing the image on your PC
  • The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends. Can prioritize children or adults
  • Captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply select the Smile Shutter mode and the camera takes the picture automatically. You can prioritize children or adults and adjust the smile sensitivity
  • An integrated GPS receiver records the location and time of every shot you take and lets you view your images on a map with compatible computer and Internet applications, so you can remember where you took your favorite shots
  • Conventional image sensors use only a handful of analog-to-digital (A/D) converters, which can slow you down. The Exmor sensor provides more than 4,000 column-parallel A/D converters. This helps enable continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second
  • is slow and visibly "hunts" for focus. The Quick AF Full HD Movie retains the same fast, precise Phase Detection you enjoy for still images. It's a decisive advantage for tracking fast-moving subjects and a major benefit of Translucent Mirror Technology
  • Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor

Eventual problem

I've had this camera for almost two years. Yesterday it just cut out on me. I've read that other users had this problem resulting in a costly repair. I love the camera but I was expecting more life out of it before I had any problems.

Great Camera

By

Overall this is a great camera. It takes awesome pics and movies. Number one con: the included lens is cheaply made. Zooming in and out is not smooth at all; very rough. I also experienced this in the 55-200mm lens I ordered with it. Very aggravating as you would expect very smooth zooming for the price of this equipment. Second con: overheats when filming video and shuts down. While this is a "still" camera as opposed to a "video" camera, Sony should not have included an option that was flawed and would not operate properly to begin with. Very poor taste on Sony's part. Having said that, as a first DSLR, I'm happy with it.

almost perfect

By

i was a minolta owner so i bought this camera because it was compatible with my old lenses. it was also new technology that i would like to try out. the first problem i encountered was whenever i use it on full auto and the flash goes off, the shutter lagged so the images were coming out blurry. i fixed this problem by using the manual setting on shutter speed with flash. the problem with this is i can't get too close with my subjects otherwise they come out too bright. so by standing at least 10 ft away, my pics came out ok and sharp. my second problem was the video. the camera will shut off after 2 mins of recording due to over heating. this also happens when you're outside in the sun. you have to shield the camera from the sun while you're walking otherwise it will not turn on. i resolved this by removing the battery and fanning the camera while shielding it from the sun and it will turn on again. this would not be a good thing if you're outside taking pics for like an hr continously with the temp over 80 degrees farenheit cause this camera will shut down. i gave it 3 stars because of these 2 problems otherwise i would have given it 5 stars. i still love this camera because it focuses quickly and especially the panoramic and rapid fire shots that it can do. with my 18-250mm lens this camera can still hold its own. i've taken pics of insects from 5 ft away that i was able to magnify that made ppl say wow! i hope these problems are fixed with the next generation of alphas so i don't have to keep using the manual modes at night.

Camera of the Year 2010 - Love it!!!

By

I am not a professional, just like taking pictures. I take mostly landscape and wildlife photos. I also do alot of macro shots of flowers, bugs etc. I recently bought a second A55 Sony body. I wanted to be able to put another lens on it, so I wouldn't have to keep changing lens all the time. Once I was familiar with the camera I loved it. It is not heavy, and has alot of great features. If I had one complaint it would be, getting use to the small grip it has. I was use to the Sony A100 before I got the A55.I would reccommend but phasing out for newer models!

Great Package Deal

By

Purchased to upgrade to an APS-C sensor camera. Far preferred the DSLT approach to an outdated flipping mirror. Lens is a great all around zoom from wide angle to long telephoto. Battery life is a small challange, but bought a package of 2 spare batteries and a travel charger for a trip to Italy. Worked great. One in the camera, one spare, one charging. AF challanged at full zoom, but easy to address by focusing closer then zooming out, which AF always held. Used different settings to take the same pictures, had a very high success percentage with that approach.

easy to use and gets a pretty good photo

By

very fast focus and shutter. great all in one lens. auto focus is great for shooting video but camera will overheat very fast 2-3 mins, short clips is great. 10fs will not miss anything. Be sure to buy extra battery and car charger, cuz batter life sucks

good camera, very short battery life

By

This set is very good for traveling. However, 2 sony batteries are not enough for a day trip. VDO recording is interrupted due to overheating after 5 minutes shooting. Don't buy it if you want to shoot lots of VDOs.

Great New Technology

By

Have been using for wedding and vacation shooting since May 2011. Love the sweep panorama for doing a bridal party shot. My customers love it when I present an 8x24 group shot as a thank you for their wedding business. The 16mp is more than enough for the enlargements and handles well in all situations.

great camera

I find this camera very easy to use and the resulting pics are great. My only compaint is the on / off switch location and action makes it easy to turn on / off by mistake. Good battery life.

Advance innovations with internal HDR, sweep panoramas, and many other leading features. Very reasonable price for all that it offers.

Questions about this item:

Wending C  What is the model number of the lens? The lens is Sony brand as well, right?
PHILLIP C  Hello, Answering your question: the model number of the lens in the set is Sony SAL18250. It is a Sony lens and comes in it's own Sony retail box. There is a pedal lens shield as shown in the picture. We have had the camera for about 1 month and have used it heavily for a variety of picture types. The lens is even better than we anticipated - the pictures you can take close up as well as long distance magnification shots are really good. It has a large f-number range in this respect and the pictures are nicely in-focus with no apparent aberrations or other issues. The auto-focus response is quick, very accurate, and reasonable quiet. It is not dead quiet, but not distracting at all. We were surprised at the quality of the lens in this set offered by Adorama. (We actually bought this set primarily for the lens, knowing that the A-55 camera was very, very good. We feel we got more than what we could have hoped for. My son has taken pictures of off-road Jeeping trips of a wide variety of types of shots, whereas I have been taking pictures of 60 mph speeding trains from close-up and soccer games for action shots from the sidelines. The telephoto lens has been outstanding!! It is excellent even for taking closeup pictures of family and children. The telephoto is manual, but is very easily adjusted by hand. The lens assembly has quite a number of glass lenses in it, typical for this wide range telephoto, but is not very heavy. FYI - we purchased a Sony DT30mm F2.8 Macro lens for really close photography; closeups of flowers, bumblebees, and the like. This lens was also surprising, being useful even for taking portraits and objects in your home. These two lenses together work fine for our purposes. Good luck!
Wending C  Thanks a lot for your answer. The lens itself costs $648. So, this combo is definitely a great deal.
Kathy P  will the minolta X700 lens work with this camera?
RICHARD L  Sorry to be so late in responding. I have no helpful info for Kathy.
Wending C  Then why do you even bother answering the question???
Shopper  Will the GPS information sync with iPhoto or Aperture software for Apple computers?
TRAVIS H  Yes, the GPS data automatically show up in both programs.
