I am a hobbyist who has wanted a set of studio strobes for a while. I have been doing occasional comparison shopping for many years, waiting for the day when I could afford to buy a basic kit. I recently acquired enough spare money to allow me to make a purchase and, after comparing several kits in my price range, I decided to purchase this kit. When it arrived and I had the chance to become familiar with the equipment, I quickly discovered that JTL does not provide much in the way of instructions. Indeed, there was but one instruction book (for the Versalight D-300) even though there are two different flash unit models included. Beside the lack of an instruction book for the J-160, there was also no PC cord for it; so that had to be ordered separately. JTL seems to have convinced themselves that the J-160 would be used solely as a slave. Also missing is a set of instructions for constructing the soft boxes. This is not intuitive. I emailed JTL for help and received no response. Finally, in exasperation, I Googled my need and found a link to an instructional video specifically addressing these soft boxes. All I needed was a mimeographed sheet with sequential pictures of how to put this product together. How expensive can a Xerox(t) be? Once the lights and soft boxes were set up, I found them to provide soft, even light. Exactly what I was looking for. The built-in slave sensors are quick to respond when slave strobes are needed. I also purchased some other accessories such as reflector bells to give me a bit more flexibility and look forward to many years of using them. My overall rating, as portrayed by the 5 star system above, is not quite accurate. I would actually give this kit a 4.5 star rating. In my opinion, all of the shortcomings result from "insensitivity" to the consumer's needs on the part of JTL and not from the engineering or manufacturing of the products. In short, by providing just a few amenities (instructions) with the kit, this JTL product would rate 5 stars.

The lighting on my pictures since I started using this kit has been the best I have seen to this date . I plan to purchase some larger softboxes and a hair light softbox later on. I would recommend this kit to anyone.
