Umbrellas will soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any continuous or flash light source. Umbrellas with a silver lining offer a cooler light, while a white interior softens and weakens light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. The black backing helps in bouncing it's reflection.

Your choice of umbrella size should be determined by the size of your subject, plus the strength of the light supply you are using. Choosing an umbrella surface is subjective, just like choosing a paint and brush.
