About Meade ETX-80

This Meade ETX-80 Bundle comes with: and Shipping is free! .

The ETX-80 is a powerful companion for exploring the universe at an incredibly attractive price. For the casual observer interested in viewing the Moon, planets, bright deep-space objects, and terrestrial landmarks, the ETX-80 is the perfect instrument.

The #494 Autostar computer system with integrated, factory calibrated time chip, permits the automatic location of over 1400 celestial objects. Just enter the object you wish to observe on to the Autostar display, and press GO TO.

The scope Features a built in Flip-In Barlow Lens, Light Weight Tripod, two Super Plossl eyepieces 9.7mm and 26mm. A Meade's Backpack for portable transportion.

Meade ETX-80 Features

  • Additional Features of the ETX-80
  • Flip-Mirror System:
For observing in the standard 90° position, flip the internal, optical flat mirror "up." For terrestrial observing with the optional #933 45° Erecting Prism or for photography with the optional #64ST T-Adapter, flip the mirror "down."
  • Ultra portable and Simple to Use:
Easy to carry to any observing location, whether a distant mountain top or your own back yard, the Meade ETX-80AT telescope brings the excitement of astronomy to users of any age.
  • Just place the telescope on any flat surface (or use the standard-equipment field tripod), do a quick, easy alignment of the telescope's computer to the sky, and start observing. Six internal (user-supplied) AA-batteries power the ETX-80AT for about 20 hours.
  • Included as standard equipment with the ETX-80AT, the #494 Autostar controller permits the automatic location of over 1400 celestial objects, including all of the objects located in the telescope's onboard database.
  • Just enter the object you wish to observe on to the Autostar display, press GO TO, and watch as the telescope moves rapidly in seconds to place the object in the telescope's field of view.
  • One observing session validates the prediction made by Sky & Telescope that "The ETX/Autostar concept will go down as the greatest happening in amateur astronomy yet."
  • Objects stored in the #494 Autostar's database include the entire range of celestial phenomena and are designed to keep the active observer busy for many a starlit evening.
  • The above database listing has been specifically chosen as suitable for observing with the ETX-80AT and provides an excellent introduction to the diversity of astronomical objects visible through the telescope.
  • In addition to its object-locating capabilities Autostar permits pushbutton centering of objects within the telescopic field at any of nine selectable speeds. Once Autostar locates an object, it directs the telescope automatically to track the object across the sky, compensating fully and precisely for the effects of the Earth's axial rotation.

Questions about this item:

Alicia F  How well did it work? Were you happy with it?
DAN D  I didn't get the full kit, but I do have the ETX-80 backpack. I am happy with it, but I knew I would be since I'd already had several Meade scopes - including the very similar ETX-60. Important to understand that it is a fast achromat so you will see some color fringing on the Moon and brighter planets. Some coma near the edge of the field of view as well. But for wide field views at relatively low power in a package which is extremely transportable - it is exactly what I wanted. But it is important to realize that it is going to eat a lot of AA batteries. But I get several hours out of a set of alkaline batteries. Oh, and the mount makes some annoying noises (including regular beeping/chirping). I find the noises tolerable, but you may not. One other note? I have been using GSO Superview eyepieces (from Agena Astro) in mine since Plossl eyepieces really are not that well-suited for very fast optics (and F/5 is very fast). That means that my experience may be somewhat better than yours would be. FWIW
