The Mandatory Item for Every Astronomer
I use this tool whenever I go out at night. For my own work, the laser beam is excellent for polar alignment, star hopping, and solving simple alignment problems between finding and main telescopes. When I give astro-tours, the laser is indispensable as a teaching tool. Unlike the usual academic pointer, the apparent beam allows others to follow your "gaze" to the object intended. Compared to my other 100mw laser pointers, the Meade 5mw is a tad weak; nevertheless it is an important adjunct to my astronomy kit. I have found that by keeping it inside my jacket, my body heat helps boost the power and visibility of the beam.
