About Nikon 105mm F/2.

105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor. Engineered for use with either Nikon DX format digital or 35mm SLR cameras, this superbly crafted lens is ideal for outstanding close-up and general photography.

Vibration Reduction
Nikon's enhanced VR (VRII) technology is built into the 105mm VR Micro-Nikkor, which enables photographers to capture sharp images at shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible (at near infinity to 1/3x shooting). This is especially powerful for handheld close-up photography, where even the smallest camera movement can result in blur. In addition, VRII technology provides a stable viewfinder image, making it easier for your customers to frame their compositions, even at high magnification shooting.

Silent Wave Motor and Internal Focusing
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures fast and quiet autofocusing. This is a must for close-up nature photographers, as extraneous noise could disturb the subject. SWM technology also enables quick switching between auto and manual focus operation. The Internal Focusing system offers a non-rotating front lens element, making it an excellent match with circular polarizing filters and Nikon's R1 and R1C1 Wireless Speedlight Systems

Nano Crystal Coat and ED Glass
The new 105mm VR Micro-Nikkor lens features proven Nikon technologies such as Nano Crystal Coat and ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass. Nano Crystal Coat further reduces flare and ED glass element minimizes chromatic aberration. These work together to provide stunning image quality.

40 year wait

By

from Spokane, WA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I have known about the quality of the optics in this family of macro/portrait lens since I was a kid but I was never in a position to afford it until the Nikon rebate. I have already used it and gotten both great portrait photos, and very close photos of flowers. The wait was worth it. As far as some comments on the focus having "hunting" issues on close focus, that is what manual focus is meant for.

Love this Lens!

By

from Nashville, TN  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This is a fantastic little mini short-range telescope, basically. Others complain of focus "breathing" which makes them have to recompose the shot. Seems moving the tripod slightly isn't that big of a deal. That's what composing my shot is a lot of doing anyway.

An excellent lens, near perfection

By

from South Carolina, USA

Having just purchased this lens and reading all the reviews I would think there is nothing else to say but there is. Some say the VR does not work well, it does. Some say it searches to much...(that is macro photography). It is great in all respects. 1. Put it on continuous focus. 2. Set the focus tracking. Just as if I were tracking a bird or lion. 3. I choose my f stop and all other factors Then when the breeze blows the subject it will not fire until it hits focus, then I get 3 or 4 frames of the subject. I still use my D700 and I will continue to for a time at least. They both are great together and so is the Nikon Capture NX2 editing program.

Great Portrait Lens in Addition to Micro

By

from San Diego, California

This micro lens is also a superior and professional portrait lens. It is constructed quite well, provides great color, and yields terrific contrast. Below is a portrait taken indoors with a Nikon D800 camera body and a Nikon SB-910 Speedlight. The image was taken with a shutter speed of 1/125 of a second, an aperture of f/5.6, an ISO of 450, Auto White Balance, and Matrix Metering.

The best macro out there.

By

from Sammamish, WA, USA

I've been a Nikon user and a fan for years. This is a superior macro lens. The quality and clarity of the shots I've taken with it are wonderful.

Great portrait and up close photography

By

from Undisclosed

Although I really enjoy this lens i realize its not for everyone. I know a few friends that have tried it and hated it. The AF is extremely fast and is a great pair with any FX camera. Great low light but be careful about tri pod use although I mostly use this handheld with D800 without any issue. The VR is really helpful on this macro.

Outstanding Lens

By

from Rockwall, TX, USA

Since I returned to photography after a few decades doing other things, I enjoy photographing the smaller things in nature. This lens is absolutely outstanding for macro photography.

Amazing Macro

By

from Undisclosed

I love this Macro Lens. It takes very crisp, colorful photos at a far enough distance away from bugs to not scare them off, (as much). I don't use the auto focus while doing macro, but I do make use of the VR. The VR is a little noisy, but doesn't seem to bother the bugs at all. The bokeh is also very nice, and having the ability to go to f32 is very awesome. My only complaint, (and it's not even really a complaint), is that it's a little front heavy. Overall this is a very sturdily built lens with amazing capabilities.

105mm f/2.8 Macro-Sharp and Flexible

By

from Orlando, Florida  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I use the 105 with a D800 and find the images to be extremely sharp. I read the positive reviews about this lens's VR performance but the lens delivers beyond my expectations, making it a very flexible tool for general shooting, close-up, and macro work. The lens contains a lot of glass, making it a little on the heavy side, and the VR rattles a bit when active.
