Just as Sharp as Advertised

By

from Boston area  -  Photo Enthusiast

I finally decided to get this wonderful lens and I am extremely happy that I did. Fabulously sharp, handles well on my D800E, and the built-in lens hood is a bonus.

Ideal Portrait Lens

By

from Montgomery, AL  -  Pro Photographer

One of my most prized possessions from years back was a Nikkor 105. In 1974 it was the sharpest thing going. Now, many years later, I have gotten my hands on a lens that is certainlt its egual, if not better. This lens is a bit heavier than the old Nikkor, but with the ability to have selective focus for background or foreground, the versatility only increases. The bokeh is beautiful, and on my d610, it may well become my favorite lens for general photography.

Absolutely amazing portrait lens

By

from Grand Forks, ND  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I used this Nikon 105mm f/2 AF-D DC for the first time with a Nikon Df a few weeks ago at the WonderCon 2014 convention in Anaheim California. This lens was just amazing! It was tack sharp and had a beautiful creamy bokeh. The autofocus was fast but did hunt around a few times when shooting inside, but this really was not much of an issue. This lens is made in Japan and built like a tank! If you are doing portraits get this lens.

Excellent lens that lives up to the hype

By

from Ireland  -  Photo Enthusiast

An excellent lens that appears to bring about love and hate in equal measure from the internet. It rewards slow and deliberate techniques. The lens is not designed for high speed photography. Much less of a learning curve than Imagon's or Canon's FD 85mm soft focus/portrait lenses. Autofocus is fast but not blazingly so, reflecting the screw-based AF. The lens is well made but that means that it is fairly heavy. Not excessively so but enough that you will know that this is not a "plastic fantastic" piece of kit.

A new favorite

By

from Pittsburgh, PA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I'm having a hard time taking this bokehlicious prime off of my camera. I suspect it will be a fixture like my first copy of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" that didn't exit my car for almost a year. I have found this to be most useful as a portrait lens but it's not a one trick pony. I also like using it for casual nature photos and indoor low light shoots. The resulting output is always consistent and very sharp in spite of the fact that there is no VR on this lens. The defocus ring is a cool feature that works nicely as well. It takes a little getting used to but yields great results. The only drawback I have found is that the autofocus in low light can be a bit slow. After focus is locked, things always go well though. I will be enjoying this lens for a long time because the build quality is fantastic.

None better

By

from St. Louis, MO, USA

This is the only Nikkor lens I have used that reminds me of the Leica glass I used to use. The results are unique. No it is not the "sharpest" lens made and the DC feature is somewhat obsolete with the advent of Photoslop, but pictures delineated with this tool at f2.0 are unlike any other.

Wonderful with D7100

By

from San Antonio  -  Photo Enthusiast

Thought I'd add on to my prior review. Upgraded to a D7100. Shot two swim meets with the D7100/105 DC. I like this combo a lot. Imagine shooting with an impossibly light 210mm f2...with the 1.3 crop mode that's what you get. Focus is bang on every time. With 7fps I'm getting about 4-6 shots coming off the blocks (still in the air). With JPEG I'm not having any issues with buffer size either incidentally. The sharpness of the lens works well with the pixel density. Need 1/2 as much AF fine tune vs the D7000 (7 vs 13). Seems to focus more accurately and more quickly too. My portrait focus hit rate seems better. It was a bummer to take the hit trading in the D7000 but I'm very happy with the results I'm getting here.

Great Portrait Lens

By

from Connecticut  -  Photography Student

Great portrait lens. Great for formal events, i.e. weddings and dances. Also great for family events. Slow focusing, but the image/glass quality is undoubtedly the best Nikon has to offer.
